За пять лет существования группы The Doors в нее вместилось несколько жизней, и к концу 1970 г. психологические последствия наркотической зависимости Джима Моррисона и его юридических проблем грозили захлестнуть группу. Любая попытка записать альбом в таких условиях должна была закончиться катастрофой, но L.A. Woman - последняя пластинка Doors, выпущенная при жизни Моррисона, - удалась почти вопреки им самим. Самостоятельно спродюсированный и записанный в частной репетиционной комнате, альбом стал возвращением домой как в музыкальном, так и в духовном смысле. "Наша последняя пластинка стала похожа на наш первый альбом: сырая и простая", - вспоминал в своей автобиографии барабанщик Джон Денсмор. "Мы словно прошли полный круг. Мы снова были гаражной группой, с которой начинался рок-н-ролл"

Во время подготовки финальных миксов Моррисон отправился в длительную поездку в Париж, надеясь вновь найти свою музу в Городе Света. Но вернуться ему уже не суждено: Певец умер там в июле 1971 года.
