Remastered from the original tapes - LP on 180-gram vinyl with tip-on gatefold sleeve - Liner notes by Andru Chapman - Unseen photos Following Light In The Attic's acclaimed reissues of British singer, songwriter and hugely talented psych, folk and rock guitarist Michael Chapman's seminal albums Fully Qualified Survivor and Rainmaker, comes 1971's Wrecked Again, his final for EMI's seminal stoner imprint Harvest, home to Kevin Ayers and Syd Barrett. Like other artists in the stable, Chapman's music contains a drugged-out feel, sublime guitar playing and intense lyrics, yet Chapman's career was not a pet project. Buried in EMI's release schedule and afforded no promotional budget ,Wrecked Again' is his lost classic. Recorded at the noted Rockfield Studio, a residential complex-cum-working farm in Wales, Wrecked Again explores orchestration via Paul Buckmaster (Miles Davis, David Bowie) and The London Symphony Orchestra and production courtesy of Gus Dudgeon (Elton John, Bonzo Dog Band), but also explores a new sound influenced by Memphis soul. With a blend of electric and acoustic instruments, Chapman is found where he feels most comfortable: in-between folk and rock, contrasting soft with edgy. Wrecked Again was made at a turbulent time in Chapman's life. Still struggling for money despite being four albums into his career, the sessions were marred by arguments over his pay. Unloved as it was by his label, the album did little to rectify the situation. Afterwards, Chapman and bassist Rick Kemp - later of Steeleye Span - set off on their first tour of the USA. Chapman was stoney broke - initially refused a visa as a result - and received no money. And that was the least of his troubles. By the third week, manager Andrew King had quit the country, and Kemp had run off with a woman in a green Mustang. Audiences couldn't understand Chapman's thick Yorkshire accent or British phrases, not least when he coughed on stage and told them, "these French fags are killing my throat". After being mugged in New York, Chapman gave up - before even reaching the West Coast. There had been highs, such as being asked to perform at King Curtis's funeral alongside the likes of Ray Charles, but the experience scarred the singer-songwriter. Back in the UK, he told his partner, Andru Chapman, "If that's the big time then fuck it - I don't want it." Chapman did, of course, go on to record more than 30 albums and tour extensively, but Wrecked Again was a pivotal moment in his career;
the tipping point between his earlier, folkier material and his later, rockier output on Deram. Here issued on CD and 180-gram vinyl in a deluxe, old-style 'tip on' gatefold sleeve, the audio is remastered from the original master tapes, meaning it's never sounded so clean. The booklet includes a memoir from Andru Chapman documenting the recording sessions and a slew of rare color photos. "Maybe now, some forty odd years later, it can get the recognition for the fine album that it was and still is," says Andru.

Polar Bear is the third album in Chapman's series of his recent improvised musical series. The first being 2011's he Resurrection and Revenge of The Clayton Peacock' which Wire magazine nominated as No. 5 Album of The Year, was widely received favourably by press and fans alike as another highpoint in Chapman's late blooming career which has been boosted by the public recognition of his talents by the likes of Thurston Moore, Jack Rose & Will Oldham. The second album, 2012's "Pachyderm' was a minimalist masterpiece, a single chord ambient work quite unlike anything Chapman had ever done before and gained him further widespread supportive reviews and a sell out UK tour with a solo Thurston Moore. It is from that tour that comes the duo performing the noise epic "Six Two Thirteen" on this new album "Polar Bear". The new record also sees Chapman experimenting with cello accompaniment, and some pieces featuring his own atmospheric slide guitar work. Further proof of Chapman's still restless search for new musical adventures. At 73 years old, he is playing better than ever, having started out on EMI's legendary 60's Harvest record label, he only goes to show that stick with it and eventually your time will come.

Every artist has a piece of work that niggles them-something that they wish they could redo, given the chance. It's why Paul McCartney once reproduced Let It Be and why Kate Bush re-recorded Wuthering Heights for her best-of album. For the prolific Michael Chapman, that album is Window, the missing link in the series of Chapman's early albums being reissued by Light In The Attic Records. Window sits just after the previously released Fully Qualified Survivor and Rainmaker, right before Wrecked Again. In 1970, signed to the hip Harvest label (home to Kevin Ayers and Syd Barrett, among others), Chapman was still an artist waiting for that first big success, perpetually skint and permanently touring to make ends meet. With that in mind, he aimed to make Window in as little time as possible because being in the studio meant not being on the road. Producer Gus Dudgeon-who'd been working with Elton John-had other ideas and booked Chapman and his band into one of the UK's most expensive studios, Trident. The singer-songwriter and prodigious guitarist was in transition from his folkier origins to his heavier future and heading for a whole mess of trouble with the same year's Wrecked Again. Given the touring bust-ups and tortured recording sessions to come, Michael's wife Andru Chapman remembers the recording of Window was noted for a "lack of hiccups. No one threw their toys out of the pram, unlike Wrecked Again." Recorded with U.S. guitar player Phil Greenberg, violin player Johnny Van Derek, and pianist Alex Atterson, the album has a blend of electric and acoustic instruments, both traditional and experimental at once, synthetic sounds melding with finger-picked guitars. The trouble came later. Immediately after recording finished, Michael took the band back out on the road with the understanding that as soon as he got back, he'd put the final acoustic guitar tracks down to replace what he's always said were only guide tracks. Unfortunately, Harvest's parent label decided the album was finished and pressed it up anyway. And Chapman, as a result, hates it. Indeed, 34 years later he even set out to right the wrong, re-recording parts of the LP and noting it was a strange experience listening to "dead people on the between-track studio chatter" (Dudgeon, engineer Robin Cable, and drummer Richie Dharma have all since passed). As part of Light In The Attic's revival of Chapman's early career, however, the album is presented as was originally released, with Michael's blessing and albeit with two CD-only bonus tracks. Andru notes, "Warts and all, it is an important part of the Michael Chapman: The Early Years story." Michael has been less diplomatic in talking about the album. "It is a piece of my history for those interested in that, even though I think it sounds like a piece of crap," he says. We're loathe to disagree with him, but, well, why don't you take a listen and decide for yourselves?
