Blue To This Day" is the final album Mickey Newbury recorded prior to his death in 2002 and was released posthumously in 2003 on Mountain Retreat. The album is a moving testament to the unique talent of one of America's greatest singer-songwriters and an almost superhuman achievement given the state of his health at the time it was recorded. Mickey Newbury was plagued in later years by chronic lung disease and often had an oxygen tank on hand during the sessions. Like its predecessors, "Lulled by the Moonlight" and "Stories >From The Silver Moon Café", it again features a mix of notable Nashville session veterans (among them Mack Gayden and Kenny Malone who played on the series of albums recorded Cinderella Sound that made up Mickey's "American Trilogy") alongside guitarist Jack Williams and violinist Marie Rhines, who both accompanied Mickey on live dates. Among the highlights is a "Tilde", a staggering re-interpretation of Leadbelly's "Bring Me a Little Water, Sylvie" and a poignant new version of Mickey's classic song, "Remember the Good", which first appeared on his seminal 1971 album "Frisco Mabel Joy" (reissued last year as part of the "An American Trilogy" box set) and was subsequently recorded by Roy Orbison. Originally released in 2000, "Stories From the Silver Moon Cafe" was the second album of original material to be issued on Mickey Newbury's Mountain Retreat label. In typical Newbury style, the album was inspired by and titled after a song that appeared on its predecessor, "Lulled by the Moonlight", and featured much the same group of musicians, including Nashville legends Gene Chrisman, Roger Hawkins, Reggie Young and Mike Elliot, as well as guitarist Jack Williams, who regularly accompanied Mickey on live dates. Alongside twelve previously-unreleased Newbury originals, the album also features a new recording of Mickey's classic song "Why You Been Gone So Long", which originally appeared on his 1973 album "Heaven Help The Child" and has since become a country music staple, as covered by the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, Anita Carter, Jessi Colter and David Allan Coe. At first, the Silver Moon Cafe existed solely in Mickey's imagination until Mickey's friend Joe Gilchrist, who served as executive producer of both this album and "Lulled by the Moonlight", decided to make it a reality and opened a venue by that name in Pensacola, Florida, which one of Mickey's home away from home. Gilchrist is also the owner of the legendary Florabama Lounge and founder of the Frank Brown International Songwriter's Festival, which hosts an annual Mickey Newbury Tribute at the Silver Moon Cafe. This new edition of "Stories From the Silver Moon Café" is housed in a digisleeve featuring stunning cover art by Oregon painter Robert S. Moyer and a 16-page booklet of lyrics.
