Karol Rathaus (1895–1954), born on the eastern fringes of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was one of the myriad Jewish composers who had to abandon a successful career in Europe, where he wrote for stage, screen and concert hall, and flee to the USA; there he earned his living in academia, working in obscurity. This first recording of his piano music reveals a powerful and individual voice, where echoes of his distant homeland color a musical language that is striking for its harmonic tension and rhythmic energy. Hailed as “rapturous and glowing” by International Record Review and “an inspirational and devoted pianist” by Life & Arts – Financial Times, Polish-Canadian pianist Daniel Wnukowski has performed throughout Europe, North America, South America and Asia in prestigious concert halls. The name of the Austrian composer Julius Bittner (1874–1939) has been almost entirely lost from view, and yet he was one of the most successful composers of opera and operetta of his day, a mainstay of musical Vienna. Unusually, Bittner was also a practicing lawyer; more unusually still, he was a double amputee, the result of the ravages of diabetes. None of his orchestral music has been recorded before – astonishingly, given the quality of the two works presented here. Vaterland is an expansive, Lisztian symphonic poem written on a patriotic impulse early in the First World War; and Bittner’s ambitious First Symphony, which has its starting point in Brahms and Bruckner, is a major piece of late-Romantic musical architecture, both tuneful and grandiose.

In his short life (1839–72) Eduard Adolf Tod garnered a reputation as one of the finest organists of the day: Liszt praised his playing, and he gave a recital in the Royal Albert Hall in the very year of its opening. Most of Tod’s handful of works for the organ – solo and as a duo partner – have not been recorded before. Here they are joined by three other little-known German organ sonatas – by Ludwig Thuille, Carl Reinecke and August Ritter – to give an overview of the genre as it evolved from its well-behaved Mendelssohnian origins into late-Romantic grandeur.

The musical language of the New York-based Arnold Rosner (1945–2013) had its roots in the modal harmony and rhythm of pre-Baroque polyphony. It evolved in an array of unusual directions, producing a style that is instantly recognisable and immediately appealing – as can be heard in the three works on this album, all receiving their first recording. Rosner’s Nocturne suggests the immensity – and the implacable violence – of outer space. His overture Tempus Perfectum has its starting point in Renaissance dance. The monumental Sixth Symphony opens with music of volcanic ferocity and vehemence; the central Adagio then provides an island of troubled calm before the dignified opening of the finale presages a symphonic Allegro of wild, freewheeling energy; only when its immense force is spent does this powerful masterpiece sink to an uneasy close. This is the third volume of the Toccata Classics survey of the orchestral music of Arnold Rosner, with more projects in the pipeline

This is the tenth release in the Toccata Classics exploration of the music of the Hungarian composer Ferenc Farkas (1905–2000). Here his chamber music with flute is in the spotlight. As with previous albums in this series, the music here highlights the characteristics that make Farkas’ music so appealing: catchy tunes, transparent textures, buoyant rhythms, a fondness for Baroque forms and a taste for the folk-music of his native Hungary that marks him out as a true successor to Bartók and Kodály. Some of these pieces speak a tougher language that shows Farkas to have been in touch with his times, but it is the infectious melodic appeal of most of the music here that carries the day. This album features twelve works comprising 35 individual movements and eleven different combinations of performer. The central performer here is one of Europe’s finest flautists, the Hungarian-Danish András Adorján.

The Swiss composer Émile Jaques-Dalcroze (1865–1950) is best remembered for his development of Eurhythmics, which teaches the appreciation of music through movement. But Jaques-Dalcroze, who studied with Delibes and Fauré in Paris and with Bruckner and Fuchs in Vienna, was a considerable composer in his own right, with operas, cantatas and orchestral works among his substantial output. The piano works on this new album, all written in the 1890s and receiving their first recording here, are generally lighter in style, showing the influence of Schumann and the salons of Paris. This is the first of a projected three volumes presenting the attractive piano music of this neglected composer. Leonie (‘Lony’) Fraenkel was a German-Jewish exile from Nazi Berlin who set up the Café de Paris on Beethovenstraat in Amsterdam in 1939. In late 1939 she sent a card to greet Peter, her first grandson, newly born in safety in England, and over the next three years she sent a series of letters to Peter and his mother, Lony’s daughter. In 1943 she was deported first to the Westerbork transit camp, and then to Theresienstadt and, finally, in October 1944 to Auschwitz, and was gassed within two days of her arrival. Many years later, that grandson, Peter, now a grandfather himself, discovered Lony’s letters, had them translated and brought them to the attention of the composer Ronald Corp. Ronald Corp has set Lony’s letters in a series of lyrical arioso recitatives for mezzo-soprano, string quartet and piano, lasting just over an hour. The cycle was first heard at the Proms in St Jude’s, in Hampstead Garden Suburb, north London, in 2017, and now Toccata Classics is releasing its first recording.

The English composer Steve Elcock (b. 1957) spent years writing music without ever expecting it to be heard: based in rural France, he worked as a translator, composing ‘for the drawer’. A recent Toccata Classics recording of his Third Symphony and other orchestral pieces revealed him to be a major symphonic voice. The works on this first album of his chamber music show the same long-term control of harmonic tension, occasionally leavened by a mischievous sense of humour. The Clarinet Sextet and The Shed Dances are immediately appealing in their melodiousness and harmonic language, whereas the darker, edgier String Trio No.1, with its stark juxtaposition of contrasts, and the sextet An Outstretched Hand, which treads a fine line between anger and grief, both offer powerful comment on our troubled 21st century. The Veles Ensemble – Hartmut Richter, violin, Ralitsa Naydenova, viola, and Evva Mizerska, cello – is a string trio based in London, its repertoire both exploring rarely heard masterpieces and bringing the classics to life. A special interest of the ensemble is in promoting new compositions and contemporary music. The ensemble occasionally works with other musicians to expand for larger projects. This album is the Veles Ensemble's debut recording. The Ensemble takes its name from Veles, one of the main old Slavic gods – the god of earth, waters, forests and the underworld. He is also the god of magic and of music, which were believed to be closely related. The Ensemble is joined on this recording by five musicians from different corners of the world, all based in London

The Mexican composer Manuel María Ponce (1882–1948) is best known for a handful of popular songs and guitar pieces, and yet he left a huge legacy of some 500 works – orchestral, chamber and piano music, art songs and folksong arrangements. These works together form the foundation of the Mexican national repertoire, and yet they are as good as unknown. The works recorded here – some for the first time – reveal a composer with a surefooted command of the orchestra: his early impressionism is infused with echoes of Mexican indigenous culture in textures of unsuspected richness. This release is the first in a Toccata Classics series exploring Mexico’s unknown heritage of classical music. José Miramontes Zapata graduated from the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire in Leningrad. He has worked as pianist, choir director and cultural manager. In 2000 he founded the Orquesta Sinfónica de San Luis Potosí and as artistic director and principal conductor of the Orchestra he has promoted many choral and orchestral actitivities with local young musicians, developing a constant cultural growth in San Luis Potosí, with more than 80 concerts per year. The San Luis Potosí Symphony Orchestra occupies an important role in the diffusion of Mexican symphonic music, with concerts in some of the major halls in México, China and Europe
