Jonathan Boulet’s We Keep The Beat, Found The Sound, See The Need, Start The Heart starts with frantic drums before blasts of guitar and vocals punch through. It’s a great beginning to an album filled with those moments—but more importantly, it feels like a record that is rarely made anymore. There’s an intensity of purpose to Boulet’s music, like in his head he’s just got all these huge choruses pushing up against an army of instruments, and the only way to get them out is to make this album. Having some grand, likely expensive, vision for your music is not a new idea. It just about crippled The Beach Boys and often results in weird, idiosyncratic but beautiful albums like David Crosby’s If I Could Only Remember My Name. It’s risky to put everything you have into a concept that blows personal moments out so massively that they become universal. Boulet might not be the happiest dude in the world, but listening to We Keep The Beat…you get the impression that he doesn’t need to be—at least not as long as he can draw everyone into his particular world of ecstatic (and, weirdly, fun) misery.
