Italian outfit Isaak was born from the demise of Gandhi's Gunn, and immediately signed a worldwide deal with Small Stone Records. Their SSR debut was the critically acclaimed The Longer the Beard the Harder the Sound released back in 2013. On Feb. 6, 2016, they issued the follow-up, Sermonize, recorded by Mattia Cominotto at Greenfog in Genova with cover art by Richey Beckett. Isaak's brand of heavy rock blends the traditional guitar/bass/drum/vocal approach with their own special brew of crazy stoner impulses, inspired by the likes of Clutch, Orange Goblin, and Torche. Small Stone releases Sermonize on CD in partnership with Heavy Psych Sounds Records, who handled the 180g LP version. With these powerhouses behind them, Isaak are ready to bring their Heavy Rockness all around Europe. Long regarded as a rising force within Italy's underground stoner rock scene, where they were previously known as Gandhi's Gunn, they released their debut album, Thirtyyeahs, in 2010 through Taxi Driver Records. After The Longer the Beard the Harder the Sound, Isaak issued a split with Mos Generator early in 2015, and with Sermonize, they make their defining statement in heavy riffs, wide open spaces, and crushing groove. Parting ways with bassist Massimo Perasso after the recording of Sermonize, Isaak is now vocalist Giacomo H. Boeddu, guitarist Francesco Raimondi, drummer/vocalist Andrea Tabbi de Bernardi and bassist Gabriele Carta. The band toured extensively for the last album, playing with international luminaries such as Church of Misery (Japan), Los Natas (Argentina), Nadja (Canada) and Amenra (Belgium), and a slew of US-based concerns, including Acid King, Atomic Bitchwax, Big Business, -(16)-, Unsane and Clutch, and they'll look to preach for Sermonize on stages all throughout 2016 and beyond. LP includes full album download North Carolina's Benji Hughes fronted a rock band in the nineties. He's written commercial jingle. He's made music for film and television (Walk Hard, Eastbound & Down). He released 2008's A Love Extreme, his excellent double-LP debut record. But these ventures aren't different hats Hughes wears. They're not different paths traveled. This is Hughes playing in different keys. Now, for his first full-length on Merge, Benji Hughes is playing Songs in the Key of Animals. Recorded over two years mostly at Frisbie studios in New York, the record is 41 minutes of pop-music exploration. The album has a summertime immediacy but an evergreen resonance (see "Longshot"). It's clever but too deep for punchlines (check the excellent back and forth of "Picnic"). It is sincere ("Girls Love Shoes") yet heartbreaking ("Song for Nancy"). It's eccentric but never forced in its strangeness. It's the kind of record that reminds us music can be fun without being empty. It's an album full of peacocks and sharks and zebras and tigers, but ultimately, it's about us. "People are animals," Hughes says, "even if some people don't want to admit it." Songs in the Key of Animals taps into something beyond just intellect or trend or taste. It's all about the feel, the connection between the player, the music, and the listener. Raja Zahr is an American music producer, singer and multi instrumentalist of Arab (Lebanese) origin. This was the first album in a row of five releases between 1980 and 1984. Mr. Zahr obviously had a fondness for classical music by Ludwig Van Beethoven since his track "Years passing by" is a variation of Beethoven's trademark composition "Ode an die Freude" with some Arab folk added. The lyrics are sung in Arab language as well. Music unites the world for sure. And even funk and synthesizer gimmicks in a disco fashion are familiar to Raja Zahr who is indeed a master of exciting music beyond all borders. Let it be soul, jazz, rock, Arab folk, European classics, pop and funk, whatever he touches and makes part of his sound vision works fairly well with the enchanted listener.
