SHANA CLEVELAND is a rare artist who seems dismissive of time. She's been performing with a rotating batch of musicians tagged as THE SANDCASTLES for over six years, and yet Oh Man, Cover The Ground is their first proper album. It would be easy to chalk up the delay behind the debut to a slacker lifestyle-Oh Man, Cover The Ground's laid-back vibe certainly suggests an extremely casual approach to songcraft. But SHANA CLEVELAND is no slacker. In the years since she first started playing out under her own name, she's helmed a number of other music projects;
most notably her revered Girls In The Garage-inspired band LA LUZ. In her downtime, she's crafted a set of 37 trading cards dedicated to obscure acoustic guitarists and a calendar of drawings depicting rock bands of yesteryear. The glacial pace of Oh Man, Cover The Ground's development has little to do with work ethic and everything to do with doing things in a way that feels right. Oh Man, Cover The Ground came together according to its own clock and calendar, and consequently feels removed from the bustle of everyday life. "I think these songs have a lot to do with the weirdness of being inside your own head all the time in the outside world. Sort of an internal monologue of thoughts I have but wouldn't say. It's about laziness, and lust, and wanting to eat other people's food when it looks better than mine.

While still unmistakably Ribozyme, this album goes even further in exploring the harmonic hive mind of Kjartan Ericsson and Bård Bøge whilst providing unfettered rhythmic work from Cato Olaisen - the vocal work is strongly emphasized and adds new depths and subtleties to their trademark sound, occasionally described as a hybrid of Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Oceansize and Alice in Chains. It has been three years since the release of Ribozyme’s “Presenting the Problem”, the band’s first release on Indie Recordings. The release of an album, which according to Corey Mitchell of Metalsucks “grooves the fuck out without trying to be hipster cool”, led Ribozyme to do their biggest yet Norwegian tour in 2012. The band was also invited to support “…And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead” on the European leg of their tour, spring of 2013, a tour that would become a massive inspiration for the writing of the new album. The band wanted to do be more oriented towards the rehearsal room in the making of “Grinding Tune” as opposed to the studio-based approach they did on Presenting the Problem. Bård comments: “As the songs [for “Grinding Tune”] was starting to develop, it became evident that the album needed a simpler production approach than their previous album. I feel we’ve gotten better at exploiting the power of simplicity in our album production, and the result is a warmer and more organic sounding album.”

Nobody grows up wanting to be an artist's artist. Appreciated by the sub sect of the sub sect is like being the beauty queen at the leper colony. Hell, anybody who claims they grew up wanting to even be an artist rather than an astronaut or a Cthulhu is probably lying or was a corny kid. Art is hard and degrading and generally bullshit. Your friends will find you irritating and your parents will certainly not throw you a parade. But if you're an artist you're an artist;
the soul will fuck you every time, what can you do? Shilpa Ray is, through no fault of her own, one of our unsung great artists. Having made her bones with the gothic Sturm und Drang of Beat The Devil and moving forward to the blues erosion of ".and The Happy Hookers" Shilpa Ray has been, armed only with an incomparable voice and harmonium haunted by the ghosts of dead lovers, perpetually crying in the wind, hoisting both middle fingers in the general direction of god. It's not a life a wise man would choose. Shilpa Ray kicks against the pricks but the pricks keep coming. But, again, what can you do? Well, that's been the narrative until now. With Last Year's Savage (maybe a nod to Leonard Cohen maybe a nod to Barrence Whitfield) Shilpa Ray has taken the pain and dark funk of earlier sounds and made explicit the sublimity that was always there just below the surface. The conversation has become less a break up with doors ripped rom their hinges and more the last pained pillow talk before parting. The obsessions with sex, death, bodily functions, and betrayal (not necessarily in that order) remain but Shilpa has expanded the palate to convey the resignation, the simmering discontent of an artist disenfranchised and held down. This is a quieter rage than the music Shilpa Ray has made before, more plaintive and considered, even if it's the quiet of a hand gripped tight on the axe handle. The music remains gorgeous and stirring in its directness while Shilpa herself remains, thankfully, entirely and inappropriately threatening. Shilpa Ray has, up till this, point, yes, been a "artist's artist." Just about every musician in New York City, who doesn't hate her, loves her and Nick Cave, in both words and deed (having her open up for him and his Bad Seeds often), sings her praises to all with the ears to listen. Obviously there are some who will always prefer lesser versions of the Shilpa Rays of the world (as if there could be more than one), preferably with blue eyes and On Brand Waifishness, but the truth will, eventually out. Talent this big can only be kept down by for so long before the sky cracks and we all drown in the blood of angels. Either way, this is Shilpa Ray's year

Since before he was even able to play an instrument, Martin Newell was messing around with home-recordings. Having grown up in the Far East, Newell returned to his home of England at age 13 with just a little 3-inch spool tape-recorder and his first guitar. At age 14 he wrote his first song, not even knowing any chords. His song writing continued through is teens and into his 20s, when he purchased a Sony reel-to-reel recorder and 12 string guitar. It is this early songwriting that led him working with a wide variety of musicians, recording in beautiful studios and forming his many projects such as CLEANERS FROM VENUS and BROTHERHOOD OF LIZARDS. But it was this early songwriting and recording that led him to find that he was happiest when recording by himself, with minimal equipment. As Newell often says, "Actually, I preferred the demos". Having upgraded himself from reel-to-reel to a Tascam Pocketstudio and digitizing some of his archaic recording knowledge, Newell set out to begin home recording again. The tracks on this collection run from 2010 to mid 2014. Some are recordings loosely based on movie themes and soundtracks for imaginary films. Some are instrumentals from a collection called The Late District, while others are from a recent album Return to Bohemia, which saw a small release in England. This recent resurgence in creative strength, along with the success and newfound popularity of Cleaners from Venus, have all led up to Teatime Assortment. Think of it as a "Best of New Newell". A true wordsmith, Newell himself has put simply why one might be compelled to take a listen here: "If you're the sort of person who likes this kind of thin, then this is the sort of thing you'll probably like.

Forcefully ascending from the depths of Paris rock underground, it only took ABRAHMA one album to emerge as one of the torchbearers of French heavy rock on the international scene. Released in late 2012 on renowned North American label Small Stone Records, Through the Dusty Paths of Our Lives unveiled an incredibly mature songwriting, while showcasing the band's sombre and complex music realm. Like the main thread of this heavy odyssey peppered with Hindu mysticism and voodoo convolutions, the sound is hulking and hypnotic, while vocals resound like a distant and irresistible incantation;
an appeal that is amped-up by guest appearances from the likes of Ed Mundell (Monster Magnet) and Thomas Bellier (Blaak Heat Shujaa, Spindrift). The quizzically-titled Reflections in the Bowels of a Bird arrives to further the sense of ritual in ABRAHMA's sound. THE LOONS have been playing their smart, inventive brand of psychotic beat music for almost twenty years. On stage and in the studio the Loons remain at the top of their game. Shindig Magazine described them as perfect pairing of Love-influenced garage-psych and the '60s British underground in the mould of the Pretty Things,played with preternatural style and ability'. This single features two exclusive tracks recorded especially for Dirty Water Records to precede the release of their new album on the legendary Bomp Records which will be followed by a high profile live appearance at the Le Beat Bespoke festival in London over the Easter weekend. Lead singer is Mike Stax of Ugly Things magazine, Anja Stax plays bass, Marc Schroeder and Chris Marsteller are the guitarists, and Mike Kamoo is their drummer and producer. Together they have seen more releases over the two decades than we can list here. And every single one of them is worth owning. A review of their last album said, ¶his recalls as much the Stooges and MC5 as Arthur Lee's Love or the Kinks. It's a terminally-cool and hip rock and roll sound. I like that Loons aren't afraid to be "pop". But in their case the "pop" is neither manufactured nor artificial. The Loons concoct a natural, organic form of music that favourably crosses strong songwriting with an air of regal garage rock recklessness (and attitude). Their warm and classic sounds should find favor with a wide cross-section of listeners.' The music of the Loons will appeal to the oldsters who dug the Nuggets sounds way back before the band even formed and also to the current crop of kids digging the modern garage rock of the Black Lips and The Parrots and the many others out there you've not yet heard of. While these tracks could easily go head to head with anything on one of those ubiquitous garage or freakbeat compilations, there is a timelessness about the music. As a music historian and archivist, Stax is a purist when it comes to sixties rock'n'roll and psychedelia. But when it comes to his own music, his need for guitars that jangle, ring and buzz, a throbbing rhythm section, and concise tunes, has a miraculous shelf life - because he and the other Loons are about breathing this stuff - to them, it's not history, it's life, it's music.
