At the ass end of the planet lies the ancient and secretive Pacific Islands known collectively by Whiteys as NEW ZEALAND. All the way down here the cassette and film production company STINC MAGNETIC, started in 1998 by a young Maori called Dylan Thomas Herkes, better known as THE MYSTERIOUS TAPE MAN. Tape Man began documenting and recording local bands from the Wairarapa, Tararua and Manawatu areas on hand-made cassette tapes recorded one by one in real time and released them on 7 different tapes of 30 copies each. He sold them out of a cardboard box wrapped in tin foil. He describes the pact of Stink Magnetic as "documenting stuff that wouldn't have been documented ". Back than he set---up a office in a old abandoned newspaper building in Whanganui, also a record and tape store and continuously recorded many locals bands. Also ZENO TORNADO from Voodoo Rhythm Records who toured NZ back in the days . Unfortunately one day the Fire Brigade and the Cops turned up and so he moved the Company to the South Island city of Christchurch --- just in the time when it was buried in a massive Earthquake. The entire personal collection of Stink HQ was covered in a two---story pile of rubble for a fews days before most was recovered again and dusted off. Stink Magnetic won at the end and held a 13th Anniversary Festival in collaboration with the Christchurch City Art Gallery. Later that year he put out a bunch more stuff before moving to it's current location in Wellington where his now to celebrate it's 15TH YEAR OF TAPE. Through it's varied and colorful 15 years of exicsting he has release over 55 different tapes, acetates, video tapes, CDRs and vinyl 7's, LPs ! All mostly sold through live shows that tours up and down New Zealand and abroad and now finally available for a bigger World Wide Audience through Voodoo Rhythm Records

Shadow Kingdom Records has announced a special double-CD reissue of PALE DIVINE’s 2007 release, Cemetery Earth, on February 18th. The fully remastered Cemetery Earth album is contained on Disc One, while Disc Two contains Demo 2006, as well as live and rehearsal material. Shadow Kingdom owner Tim McGrogran had this to say about the reissue: “The third Pale Divine album is probably right where the band envisioned their sound to be when they first started their career. They are the masters at blending 70s psychedelic blues jamming with sinister dark heavy traditional doom metal. There are not too many bands that are able to do what they can do which makes them the big fish in a small pond if you’re into psych/doom. The guitar leads sweep you away, but also gently bring you back to the heart of the song. The addition of John Gaffney (songwriter for SINISTER REALM) on bass added different dimension to this album that helped them grow as a band.”

After being rejected from military service in Vietnam due to epilepsy, and discouraged from pursuing the coal mining business, Jack decided to start wandering. By the time he landed in Nashville, where he met Roger Moutenot, Patty Griffin, and Kurt Wagner, Jack had worked as a carny, an escape artist, a ballet dancer, a professional lute player, and even owned a strip club. Simplicity was the inspiration: get in the van, rehearse in the van, tour in the van, stay mobile. "I have played in a lot of bands with complicated set-ups and implemented technologies," says John. "I also do a lot of recording and editing on computers, so part of the desire for simplicity was about wanting things to be as organic and in real time as possible." This impulse to keep things moving is reflected in the songs themselves. Most Vertical Scratchers songs clock in under the two-minute mark but often go in twice as many directions as your average-length song. Pop deception. Motivational Jumpsuit" is the latest, bestest release by reunited indierock (whatever that means) juggernaut (means an unstoppable force) GUIDED BY VOICES. It speaks in several silvery tongues, and like last year's "English Little League" takes many routes to the same shimmery, elusive destination: rock greatness. Its twenty songs (in thirty-eight minutes!) range from the shaggy Who Sell Out pop-pourri of "Evangeline Dandelion" to the lurching, rifferific "Planet Score," breezing briskly through every worthwhile rock und roll style sheet along the way. Pollard and co.'s influences are by now so thoroughly assimilated that GUIDED BY VOICES referents are mostly to other GUIDED BY VOICES songs/eras: "Save The Company" calls to mind GBV's Bee Thousand/Alien Lanes lo-fi glory daze, while "Vote For Dummy" could be from Isolation Drills. For instance. Recent intramural turmoil aside (GUIDED BY VOICES has a long history of members qutting/getting fired/posting private correspondence online/waking up in the gutter), the band has never sounded more cohesive;
when Tobin Sprout's insanely catchy feather-light confection "Record Level Love" bobs up against the deeply purple spray-paint rock of "I Am Columbus," which then pinballs into the elastic, sprightly "Difficult Outburst and Breakthrough," the pacing and variety always seem to make some kind of higher sense, if only as an appeal to the senses. "Motivational Jumpsuit" is gangly, wordy, heavy, lovely, catchy, rocky, complexly simple, and better than almost any record you'll hear this year. This is the fifth record (in three years) by New Era GBV, and there will be more. This is not counting the eleventy-three solo albums/side projects frontman Robert Pollard has released under his own name and various proxies. The listener may be forgiven a certain degree of bewilderment at the sound feast spread before him, but rest assured, this is the result of hard labour by a restlessly inventive musical mastermind. You can dig in anywhere you like, but you will always come back for more. Like a star to every wandering bark, GUIDED BY VOICES is as constant as love. You can't say better than that

That Joel Thibodeau's slender, winsome voice is at once so comforting and so unsettling might be the greatest of his many strengths. Reed-thin but sturdy, youthful but somehow ageless, its deep benevolence is also slightly eerie, and the way he gently walks the line between intense feeling and contemplative remove lets him sing from a timeless place where he evokes the beauty of vanished people and places, sweetness too profound for words, loss too great for tears. Like Nico's, Jimmy Scott's, or Phil Elverum's, Joel's is a voice that demands its own sonic and lyrical world, and with Island Intervals, his third record as Death Vessel (and second for Sub Pop), we're treated to the sound of him finding a rich and strange new home among new friends in Iceland who probably saw him as a long-lost relative. Joel's an inveterate and intuitive wanderer;
when I met him years ago, he'd just spent a few months traveling the United States on Greyhound buses, sometimes sleeping rough, and making a record from found moments. Island Intervals springs from a more recent journey. For his first album since 2008's acclaimed Nothing Is Precious Enough for Us, Joel traveled to Reykjavík on an invitation from Sigur Rós singer Jónsi and producer Alex Somers, where they spent three months together conjuring an album that's both a song cycle and a window into a mysterious and singular landscape. Island Intervals wraps Joel's voice and furtive guitar in sounds that evoke not so much a band playing as elemental forces of earth and water;
Pete Donnelly (The Figgs, NRBQ), Samuli Kosminen (Múm) and Thorvaldur "Doddi" Thorvaldsson assist Somers in creating a rich and multi-layered world that sounds, at times, like a well-tuned forest sighing and bending in a gale, or the deep cracks and booms of a glacier calving its way to the sea. Jónsi also joins Joel on vocals for the track "Ilsa Drown."
