Philadelphia band Sadgiqacea has only two members, drummer Fred Grabosky and guitarist Evan Schaefer. But False Prism, their excellent full-length debut due May 7 on Candlelight, indicates that a limited membership doesn’t entail diminished ideas or abilities. They bridge thrash and doom, black metal and drone, field recordings and power metal into often-seamless long-form pieces. At six minutes, the record’s title cut is its shortest, but it’s an apt demonstration of the duo’s versatility. They start with a sustained and blackened sprint, downshifting toward the middle to retrench with subdural distortion and a heavy, patient march. As the song phoenixes toward its end, Sadgiqacea delivers an intriguing chimera, where serrated, sinister vocals are engraved over an instrumental that teases at but never delivers a post-rock climax. Spend some time sounding out Sadgiqacea; with a debut this interesting, it’s a name you’ll encounter again in years to come. Style: Black Metal

If you’re curious about how much a Black Metal band can actually bend the term and the inscribed elements of the genre without losing the grounding, the new TOTAL NEGATION record (out 3/31/13 on Temple of Torturous) should be on your must-hear-list. This is not a self-contained full-length, but the two EPs Zur späten Stunde (“at this late hour”) und Zeiträume (“timeframes”) combined onto one carrier medium – a choice that is totally understandable when you give the eight songs a listen, because atmosphere and song-writing differs quite a lot between the two EPs. Nonetheless both parts are woven into another by the lyrical concept. In a nutshell: Zur späten Stunde deals with the psychic process sleep, whereas Zeiträume refers to the trippy state of mind when dreams and reality start to blur. The second EP, Zeiträume, is something different. I mean there have been traces of Psychedelica in TOTAL NEGATION‘s music before, and there are a few bands combining somewhat psychedelic music with Black Metal, but what’s going on Zeiträume is beyond everything you’d ever expected a Black Metal artist to come up with. Wiedergänger let his devotion for Kraut Rock totally kick in, the epitome of German rock music created in the late 60ies and 70ies by hugely influential bands like CAN, NEU! or FAUST. This results in four tracks that combine the progressive, psychedelic aspirations of Kraut Rock with the atmosphere and aggression of Black Metal. “Obscure” is a term often used to describe Black Metal, but it never applied better to something than to Zeiträume. Not only do the riffs and the song structures have this Krauty feeling, there is also the heavy use of a melodica and if that wouldn’t be crazy enough, a vibraharp. Thus the music that is created is really arcane, trapping you quite often between pure astonishment and inconvenient unease. Sky Burial is the third-full length album from atmospheric black metal/folk/drone group Echtra, who hail from Olympia, Washington. The record, which is composed of two twenty-three minute tracks entitles “Sky Burial I” and “Sky Burial II,” forms the first instalment of a conceived trilogy of albums entitled The Passage Cycle. Each of these three records will deal with “sloughing off the mortal coil” in some way, and the transition from one state of being to the next. Echtra is a solo project, all elements performed by the eponymous multi-instrumentalist, though Echtra is joined by guest musicians for rare live performances. The word “Echtra” is an old, pagan Irish word for journey of adventure, and particularly a quest that takes the traveller to the Otherworld, or realm of the fairies. It is a journey that involves not only moving from one state to the other (our world into a different world), but a process of transformation, as passing into another mode of being can’t help but change us. This is also how Echtra frames the way the idea of death is explored throughout Sky Burial, as a profound change or transfiguration, but certainly not a permanent end. This is mirrored in the title of the record as well: a sky burial is a type of funeral wherein the body is ritually dismembered and fed to carrion birds, thereby buried in the sky. digipack. As depressive suicidal black metal is getting more and more recognition in the metal realm, I was really waiting the Danish "Make a Change... Kill Yourself" to release its third full length album, "Fri", after the very successful release "II" that dig its way toward the ears of every DSBM listener since 2007. The name of the band is not the only thing that can catch your attention. The structure of the music that sums up the pieces of Silencer and Nyktalgia together can also catch your attention in a very original way. The tempo of the tracks are one of the first things that makes this Danish group dissimilar to most of the slow-paced DSBM bands that exist nowadays. The vital drum lines make this music full of anti-existentialism feelings. The black metal vocals that have been influenced by the second movement of black metal float on the surface of the guitars, making the whole environment more devilish and melancholic at the same time. The track "Fri Fra Denne Verden" is faster somehow than the track "Livets Gave", but the second one has more depressive feelings and dim essence than most of the other tracks on this album. The slow-paced track "Du Er Alene" reminds me a lot of the band Nocturnal Depression, and the same slow motion guitar sections and the sluggish double bass makes this track one of the most atmospheric-dramatic tracks on this album. These three tracks are not the only pieces of this record, because this full-length has so much to give. The final track that runs for more than 18 minutes is one of the strongest depressive black metal songs that I've heard in 2012 because of its deep tremolo guitar melodies and atmospheric keyboard melodies. Overall, this album has the same creative DSBM performance that this Danish group has presented in the previous albums, but this time with more deep and excellent ideas to make the structure of the tracks more stable and anti-boring. If you're searching for the perfect DSBM that can fit this winter perfectly, then you have to get your copy of this release right now and forget about all the other releases.
