In collaboration with Canada’s Cyclic Law label, we present a special re-issue of VESTIGIAL’s two first EP’s, “Solar” and “Aeon”. The Italian project points to a dichotomous vestige of man’s biological evolution relating to the degeneration of civilization, where a society enslaved to progress can only lead to a completely meaningless existence. Vestigial’s first output was the “Aeon” EP released in 2007 and had caused quite a stir in the Dark Ambient scene on its release for the sheer power and craftsman’s shift it contained, where slow burning atmospheres are offset by the occasional harsh outbursts of noise and crackles and underpinned by heavily processed voices. The “Solar” EP was released in 2009 and presented a rawer vision of Vestigial where death industrial sonorities collide with intricate ambient passages. Both EPs are very impressive pieces of dark ambient and we are pleased to make them available once again. LIMITED QUANTITIES ON THIS KRANKY RELEASE. Developing on the trance-induction and brainwave entrainment techniques explored on the ?rst Ethernet album 144 Pulsations Of Light, Opus 2 moves into deeper, more introspective and emotive territory. A stronger focus on melody and harmonic structure results in pieces that almost approach, but never quite arrive at, traditional song forms, while still leaving much to the imagination of the listener, evading mental categorization and revealing new sonic experiences with each listen. The bulk of recording took place during the darkest months of winter in the Paci?c Northwest, between late-night shifts providing technical support for hospital operating rooms. The pieces on the album each formed gradually and spontaneously during extended improvised sonic meditations as part of the composer's own trancework (or self-hypnosis) practice, this in an effort to remove speci?c compositional intention from the process, instead just allowing them to "happen". If 144 Pulsations... was about expansion of awareness and opening to the light that surrounds us, Opus 2 is intended to induce inner contemplation and internalized focus on the light within us. It is also a statement on the gradual darkening and inexorable decay of our modern world, and the need to look within to ?nd true support and sustenance from one's own energetic source. Talvihorros is London based composer Ben Chatwin's study of guitar and electronics. Numerous techniques are used to coax a myriad of sounds from both acoustic and electric guitars. Home-made and vintage electronic equipment are used to loop, process and manipulate improvised material into dense and dark sound collages. What started out as a personal challenge to make an album in 7 days grew into something else entirely. If last years album 'Descent Into Delta' was reminiscent of plunging into the murky depths, his latest offering 'And It Was So' evokes the expansiveness, dynamicism and density of the cosmos. Attempting to find order in chaos is something Talvihorros has been striving to achieve over the past three albums and he has never balanced these elements so beautifully. Estasy is the musical alias of Rome, Italy-based installation and performance artist Emiliano Maggi. After a few cassettes and CD-Rs, Estasy is releasing its full-length debut, Wild Songs, on Acéphale (SALEM, Elite Gymnastics, How To Dress Well). Wild Songs doesn't sound like anything else, but it contains echoes from disparate sources. The first thing you'll notice is Maggi's voice, which has the range and timbre of an Italian Coloratura singer. Unlike many of today's high-octave singers, this is not a falsetto; it's a soprano. Sometimes it appears stark and alone, sometimes buried underneath ghostly vocal overdubs. Wild Songs has a haunting quality that derives spiritually from Maggi's recording process. All but three tracks on the album were recorded en plein air: amongst nature in fields and woods. The sounds of wind and nature, and Maggi's tape recorder, blend into his spectral soprano to create a mythological world that modern civilization can no longer see, but which through acts of the imagination we might be able to hear. The result is something like Alan Lomax's field recordings trapped in Werner Herzog's Cave of Forgotten Dreams. Reference points include the Nordic folk music traditions currently being kept alive by acts such as Dvergmål, the sublime other-worlds given birth to by Sigur Rós's made up language, and most notably the proto-gothic funereal dirge of Nico's post-Chelsea Girls trilogy.
