STELLAR OM SOURCE's new album, "Joy One Mile", marks a certain and spirited departure into worlds unknown. A faithful leap into the infinite beat, "Joy One Mil" is the most forward-reaching effort by STELLAR OM SOURCE yet. STELLAR OM SOURCE originated from Christelle Gualdi's desire to unhinge from her academic musical upbringing. A double bassist in the Konigin Katharina Stift Schulorchester and a student of music theory at Université Paris VIII, Gualdi completed her studies in electro-acoustic composition at the Conservatoire de Paris after earning an architecture degree. The process of Gualdi's "unlearning" began in experimental ensemble settings, and it became more recognizable as she moved toward solo performance. STELLAR OM SOURCE's name is fittingly inspired in part by the pathway to higher consciousness and cosmos via one's own voice. Gualdi was also inspired by-and also an integral member of-the late aughts DIY synthesizer community. Alongside ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER, EMERALDS and JAMES FERRARO, STELLAR OM SOURCE's stream of self-released CDRs defined a zeitgeist of artists trending away from their noisy roots via polyphonic escapism. The singularity of Gualdi's compositions, when pulled back and recalibrated even slightly, resemble early era Warp Records, and, by that admission, the wayward electro of early-90s Detroit. The abstractions in Gualdi's programming and mutant melodies is what keeps Joy One Mile perfectly relegated to outsider status, akin to the primitive techno of Esplendor Geometrico and Chris & Cosey. London based electronic marvel Kel McKeown - aka Kelpe - celebrates ten years of sonic boundary pushing with new maxi single, DRUT001/ 'Answered' - out April 15th - and new LP DRUT002/ 'Fourth: The Golden Eagle' - out June 3rd - both on his brand new label DRUT. Setting to work with a selection of analogue synths - Moog, Korg Polysix, Korg MS10 and Doepfer Dark Energy - the Ableton aficionado and purveyor of warped, cut 'n' spliced cliq-hop beats has delivered a handcrafted, 10-track masterpiece of an album which draws upon the strengths of his previous three. It's softer, warmer and more graceful than 2009's 'Cambio Wechsel', with a strong melodic element, and one which will secure his place in the canon of post-IDM greats. Kelpe says of the LP: "On the whole, I was trying to make the warmest and most analogue sounding thing I've done, and I think it came out best on 'Answered'. The rest of the LP, in a way, is an extended build up to that favourite track on the record, which in itself was an opportunity to take leave of everything preceding it and go off on an epic trip." Rollicking opener and curveball 'Astrolomy' brings to mind the mesmeric Anatolian guitar of 'After Gold' - a standout track on 'Cambio Wechsel' - swishing its tail to syncopated drum rolls as it dodges electro bolts-out-of-the-blue. It's followed by the lush, soulful, heavenly Baths-esque future pop of 'Beaks of Eagles' - with gloopy synths, hollowed beats and obfuscated crowd chatter - the kind of song that chillwave probably wanted to be, but never quite was. The shoegaze-ready 'Nice Eyes In My Size', with twinkles of xylophone and twisted, subtractive synths aping the guitar's wah-ing licks, is pursued and offset by the squelchy industrial clamour of ensuing track 'Single Stripe', which metamorphoses from techno to dream-pop in one fell swoop, glossed over with fade-out vocals and a denouement of synthetic steel drums. Within the world of electronic music, Will Saul is perhaps best known for Aus Music and Simple Records, the labels he set up and has A&Red for over a decade. Between them there have been over 100 vinyl releases from the in¬uential likes of Joy Orbison, Carl Craig, Pearson Sound, Scuba and Actress, as well as EPs that helped to break upcoming talents like Bicep, Dusky, Midland and George FitzGerald. Getting Closer will be Will’s rst full-length album since ‘Space Between’, released under his given name back in 2005. He has slowly and anonymously leaked CLOSE material into the public sphere over the last 12 months; including remixes of Fink, Little Dragon and Hot¬ush boss Scuba. The alias was initially conceived in order to release music that would be judged on merit alone, rather than on the name to which it was attached, but following great reactions was increasingly dif cult to keep secret. Proceeded mid April by rst single ‘Beam Me Up’ Feat. Charlene Soraia and Scuba (with remixes by George FitzGerald, Hercules and Love Affair and Scuba) the album marks a big evolution in Saul’s sound, leaning away from bass and house and more toward a world of dark yet idyllic pop. The album’s title ‘Getting Closer’ refers quite literally to its creation process, which was distilled through a number of collaborative layers. The recording started in Brighton with Fink – one of Will’s oldest friends. The pair recorded a number of live takes of Fink’s band (drummer and bass player) which formed the early sketches that were sent to the featured vocalists – Joe Dukie of Fat Freddies Drop, Tikiman, Charlene Soraia and Fink himself. The songs that came back were then developed further in a heavily electronic setting – a windowless world of analogue toys and geekery - in the studio of Will’s long term production partner, Tam Cooper. The album was certainly conceived with live performance in mind, and as such Bristol producer Al Tourettes has been brought in to play live drums, and a team at Silent Studios has designed an accompanying AV show which will extrapolate the music’s intimacy, warmth and detail into brand new, extra-sensory stimulating territory in a way that few yet have in the electronic realm. Even more than just a collaborative work, then, Getting Closer is an album that draws together many artistic disciplines into one new and exciting concept that hopes to lead the way in avant-guard electronic music and live performance.
