On THE BAPTIST GENERALS' sophomore album, the word "heart" repeats eight times. The Denton, TX band, known for its haunting, claustrophobic take on drunken folk, needed ten full years to bare its hearts - one of which is in the album title, "Jackleg Devotional to the Heart", a name that songwriter Chris Flemmons conjured shortly after he recorded, and then trashed, the album's first attempt in 2005. Flemmons goes so far as to call this his "love album," and it's an apt description - though love through THE BAPTIST GENERALS' eyes is plenty complicated. Jackleg's hearts don't resemble valentines. The band's vibraphones, guitarrons and ambient feedback combine like a mess of ventricles, aortas and veins - not to mention, from the sound of it, all of the blood spilled while Jackleg lurched for years toward an eventual finish line. Call it a love record, then. It's the kind of love Flemmons had to figure out in the ten years since THE BAPTIST GENERALS' critically-acclaimed 2003 full-length debut "No Silver/No Gold", a period in which he admits he's fallen in love with a wild spectrum of music - the Ethiopiques series, saxophonist Archie Shepp, film scorer Meredith Willson, and plenty more. That wide spectrum only befits Jackleg's repeated need to buck genre;
in fact, the 2005 version of the album hit the trash heap because "it sounded like any other indie rock-type band," Flemmons admits. Co-produced by Stuart Sikes (LORETTA LYNN, CAT POWER, THE WALKMEN, MODEST MOUSE, THE WHITE STRIPES) and the band's Jason Reimer, "Jackleg Devotional to the Heart" sounds like exactly no one else

All LPs include a download code. Can a song cross the ocean? Is music the universal language? Can a whisper be loud? Absolutely, says "Suchness", the debut LP from WE ARE LOUD WHISPERS, a dreamy duo featuring Sonya Westcott (Arthur & Yu) and Ayumu Haitani (4 Bonjour's Parties). Seattleite Westcott met Haitani-who lives in Saitama on the island of Honshu-when Arthur & Yu toured Japan in 2007. The two have not seen each other since and are separated by the world's largest body of water, but that was no deterrent to forming a band together. Assembled over email, "Suchness" transcended geographical and language barriers-and traditional ideas of what a "band" is-in its making. Haitani would write and record instrumentals, upload them, and send to Westcott. As she listened thousands of miles away, she would pen lyrics to his orchestration, meditations on feeling alone even when partnered, wanting to control the uncontrollable, and on the power and promise of reaching for someone's hand. The song titles themselves tell a story: "Starcrossed," "This Time," "I Hate to Say Goodbye." After writing lyrics, Westcott would record a vocal track, upload, hit send, and wait for these starcrossed halves to meet and become complete-a process reminiscent of The Postal Service's Give Up (fitting since Jimmy Tamborello sings on track "Glossolalia"). Despite the modern magic required to realize "Suchness", and its intricacy of its electronic orchestration and parade of horns, timpani, loops and effects, the record breathes with an organic ease. The layers of complexity never sound cluttered, melding together in Zen simplicity. Westcott's airy whisper floats above heartbeat percussion, evoking the emotive electro of Lali Puna and Notwist

This is the 1st release from THE TEMPERANCE MOVEMENT who are five guys, four of them in London, one in Scotland. In short, they rock. Big, sweaty, old-school, sincere rock. SALTLAND is the new project led by Montreal-based cellist Rebecca Foon, best known as a founding member of contemporary chamber group ESMERINE and a former member of THEE SILVER MT. ZION and SET FIRE TO FLAMES. Foon began composing solo work in 2010, featuring multi-layered cello and hushed vocals at the intersection of drone, no-wave, improv, dream-pop and minimalism. Joined by Jamie Thompson (UNICORNS, ESMERINE) on miniature percussion, programming and signal processing, Foon's live performances in Montreal and abroad over the past two years have seen her sound progress towards gently rhythmic and electronic territory as well. She has transfixed audiences with this new music while sharing the stage with Mary Margaret O'Hara, Julia Kent, Nat Baldwin and Sam Amidon, among others. As her largely homerecorded debut album began taking shape throughout 2011, with numerous guests contributing to various pieces, Foon adopted the SALTLAND moniker for this work. "I Thought It Was Us But It Was All Of Us" is a beautifully restrained debut album that telescopes the directness and economy of Foon's compositional and vocal styles into lush, twilight atmospheres aglow with luminescent tendrils and flickering particles. Foon sings of childhood innocence lost, of tender utopic reveries and downcast dystopic horizons, and the search for soft, stoic strength in a darkening, devolving world. Foon's voice is discreet but defined, drifting on buoyant currents of sound sourced from her plucked and bowed cello lines, in most cases propelled by Thompson's bespoke percussion and understated programming/processing, with touches of guitar, bass, horns, woodwinds, strings and backing vocals added by a cast of supporting players. The record unfurls like a gauzy flag in a restless breeze at dusk: a delicate, resolute sentinel set against the fading light. With contributions from Laurel Sprengelmeyer and Jess Robertson (LITTLE SCREAM), Mishka Stein (PATRICK WATSON), Colin Stetson (BON IVER), Sarah Neufeld and Richard Reed Parry (ARCADE FIRE) among others, SALTLAND offers up an unassumingly immersive debut album of searching songs that blend several core influences into a distinctively naturalistic sound. SALTLAND stakes out an unaffected, meditative, clear-eyed and earnest space where minimalism, dream-pop, drone, shoegaze, confessional folk, modern chamber and ambient/electronic coexist and coalesce.

Following up their warmly received 2011 Alter debut, "The Letter", "Sane Men Surround" is the second album to emerge from Southend-on-Sea's LIBEREZ. Like it's debut, the 9 tracks here continue to savagely EQ percussion, guitar, violin and electronics into abstraction with tracks like "A Warning" and "My Madness Offends" bearing the industrial, and almost ritualistic, atmospherics of its predecessor, whilst "Nema Te" and "What's Mine Is Mine" introduce a new style of composition and songwriting which pushes the group towards a more bombastic, almost post-punk sound. As ominous as it is seductive, "Sane Men Surround" is a true product of the South-East of England. It is a work of suburban claustrophobia that lurches around Britain's industrial past and glares at its future. It is an album with a brain and a heart, evoking the rumbling lorries of Essex, its scared sober marshlands, and peace riddled battlegrounds. Previously issued as limited vinyl edition of 100 copies on the Savory Days label, this CD edition features a different master to suit the format.
