First vinyl reissue of this 1966 easy listening/Latin masterpiece by Mark Wirtz, of 'Grocer Jack' and "A Teenage Opera" fame and in-house producer for EMI at Abbey Road in the mid/late 60s. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180g vinyl. Mark Wirtz's most famous output was recorded during the mid/late 60s when he was working as in-house producer for EMI at Abbey Road. His "Mood Mosaic" LP and the unfinished concept album "A Teenage Opera" (a single off this LP, 'Grocer Jack', was actually released in 1967) provided Wirtz with an iconic status among easy listening collectors. However, his lesser known 1966 album "Latin A Go-Go" is the one to have if you aim to hit the dancefloor. The title of this album may not be very original but perfectly describes the music inside. Think of wild cocktail parties in sunny California in the mid-60s, cosmopolitan hotel lounges in Copacabana or the hippest clubs in Swinging London and you'll get a picture of what the perfect scenario for playing this LP looks like. However, it seems that only a few people needed this vibe in their average lives when the record was originally released in the UK, Netherlands and Spain (often under different titles and cover art) and copies have vanished over the years. 50 years after it was first released, it looks like the right time to enjoy again this masterpiece of 'Latin a go-go' music that includes just about every classic hit you could expect: atermelon Man', 'Comin' Home, Baby', eh, Yeh'. It features the likes of Barbara Moore (from the legendary library music album "Vocal Shades And Tones") on chorus vocals, Jim Sullivan (Lord Sitar) on guitar and the prolific session player Vic Flick.

On two 12”s and over the course of a staggering 78 minutes, big things are happening on »Jams«, Urban Homes’ monumental sophomore album. The highly ambititous attempt at a certain history of dance music, a sweaty night on the dance floor, an excursion into the fog…But one thing at a time: The 13 Jams go back to recordings of years of communal, MIDI- and hardware-based jam sessions which, over three years, were painstakingly discarded, refined, condensed, reconstructed and provided with occasional guest vocals by Hanitra Wagner (Ωracles, Die Heiterkeit). The album was mixed by Jan-Philipp Janzen (Von Spar) at Dumbo Studios, mastered by Cem Oral at Jammin’ Masters. Sonja Deffner (Die Heiterkeit, Jason & Theodor) is responsible for the stunning gatefold artwork. On »Jams«, Benjamin Riedl, Stephan Weinand and Oliver Bersin explore a history of dance music that is retraced in the 13 tracks: The seemingly clear cut references in titles such as »Verdub Lang Her (Stripped Down Killer Dub Jam)«, »Blue Note Jam« or »As High Acid Can Get (☺ Jam)«, however, are not to be taken as letters of intent, but—despite the playful handling of genre conventions and clichés—as hommages to the immaterial architecture of the club: the atmosphere, the vibe, the jam. In its rich texture, the dramatic composition of »Jams« reconstructs the resonance space of an excessive, foggy, and steamy night at the club, thereby approaching its point of interest. Despite the clear club compatibility (each of the 13 tracks will work on a dance floor worth its salt), Urban Homes do not shy away from sticky harmonic arrangements and melodies that are bound to be called »pop«. They do however, and this is one of the points of this great album, avoid any overarching narrative of organicity or authenticity which might refer the record to a context of »indie« music. Unlike the acclaimed and award-winning debut »Centres«, which wore the socialization of the (previously four) Urban Homes on its sleeve, this is rootless, nomadic music that is in the most beautiful sense »out there«. So far out there, in fact, that we seem to make out figures such as Pharaoh Sanders or Sun Ra through the ever-present (see titles such as »4/20 Jam« or »Summer Rolls (Midnight Munchies Jam)« for reference) fog. What seems so effortless, casual and relaxed over the entire run time, finally, is in fact merely evidence of the band’s musical mastery and precision: The staging of gaps, the fraying, dripping track ends and its general weirdness is part of the modeling of the history of a music that formed without a »quantise« command.

Featuring harmonies from The Lion and The Wolf, “Come Home” is a hauntingly ethereal cut from Paley’s upcoming new LP, Sirens, due out November 18th via Paper + Plastick Records (US) and Make My Day Records (EU). This song delivers on all levels. Paley tells us, "'Come Home' came together sometime last year based on a lyric I had rattling around in my head for a while. The story grew up around that, and I finally fleshed it out all in one go some winter night in early 2015. It felt a little too raw to me at first, as many of the songs that I end up keeping to myself do, but I figured I’d see how it felt to play it live during a tour across Germany with The Lion and the Wolf later that summer. By the end of the tour, I’d gotten over my hesitation. Along the way, Tom (from The Lion and the Wolf) started harmonizing with me on the chorus at shows, and I really like the way our voices worked together. Thus, when I finally recorded it in early 2016 during a stay out in the woods of Vermont, I wanted to be sure to capture that on the record itself and I asked Tom if he’d be up for laying a vocal on it, too. Thankfully, he did so, taking an afternoon in a studio over in the UK to lay down his track. And that’s how the version that ended up on the album came to be.”

There is something that is underrepresented in Christmas music, and that's just how uncomfortable the holidays can be for a lot of folks," David Bazan says about his collection of holiday songs "Dark Sacred Night". Back in 2002, David Dickenson of Suicide Squeeze Records approached Bazan and asked if he would be interested in doing a 7" of Christmas carols. The result was the "I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day" b/w "Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel" single released under Bazan's Pedro The Lion moniker. He followed it up with "The First Noel" 7" in 2003 and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" in 2005. Even after retiring the Pedro The Lion project, Bazan continued his run of Yuletide singles for Suicide Squeeze under his own name. These limited edition 7"s are all long out of print, but David Bazan and Suicide Squeeze have chosen ten of the fourteen tracks, remixed and remastered the material, and collected them on "Dark Sacred Nights". The festive aspect of the holidays is noticeably absent on Dark Sacred Night. Instead, Bazan focuses more on meditative classics ("Silent Night", "Away In A Manger"), somber modern holiday songs ("Happy Xmas (War Is Over)", "Long Way Around The Sea"), and, in the case of "Wish My Kids Were Here", ruminative originals. But throughout the ten tracks, Bazan's plaintive baritone voice and sparse instrumentation tie the multiple generations and songwriting approaches of these holiday songs into one cohesive melancholic sound.

A “live album from Toro Y Moi” makes sense, then, when you consider Live from Trona wasn’t recorded from an actual concert or festival appearance: rather, the show was performed in front of no one, amidst the beautiful landscape of Trona—three hours away from Los Angeles and a town home to about 3,000—the perfect showcase for a set of Bundick’s laidback tunes. Still, how does the beatmaker and songwriter translate live? In a live club setting, it works, because small, indoor venues amplify his layered, dense rhythms that propel his post-2011 output (and accentuate his penchant for catchy, striking riffs). But how does it work from the middle of a canyon? Bundick circumvents this by crafting a set that mostly sticks to the guitar-laden What For?. By tackling some of his least-loved songs head-on as the centerpiece of this record, Bundick shows a continued willingness to tinker with his work until he’s completely satisfied with the final product, which has been a hallmark of his career. Live from Trona also asks you to consider Bundick’s artistic output as a whole: by exploring sounds we never would have expected to hear from him in 2010, he’s continually evolving. The album leaves you wondering what his next pivot could be.

In view of this broad range of activities it was not such a big surprise after the EURYTHMICS’’ (temporary) split to see DAVE STEWART pull THE SPIRITUAL COWBOYS out of his hat in 1990, a band that musically had little to nothing in common with the synth pop of his duo with Annie Lennox. Three guitars! Two drum kits! Up to now, that was only known from southern rock/ jam bands like THE ALLMAN BROTHERS, GRATEFUL DEAD and LYNYRD SKYNYRD. Behind one of the drum sets sat Martin Chambers whom STEWART had borrowed from Chrissie Hynde (PRETENDERS) - if Chambers did not hurry to the front edge of the stage to shake the maracas or sing backing vocals. Guitarist John Turnbull, too, with a history of being in IAN DURY & THE BLOCKHEADS was not an unknown figure within this seven person line-up. Yet, in all the coolness: On the big stage DAVE STEWART and the SPIRITUAL COWBOYS are full power on immediately, unfolding their massive wit with the first Rickenbacker riff of the opener ‘Love Child’ – to draw on their full potential of repertoire during the following 80 or so minutes. The very BOWIE-esk ‘Soul Years’ is standing besides the wistful memory ‘This Little Town’ for that STEWART even unpacks his harmonica. The gospel inspired hymn ‘Love Shines’ lifts off no less (but totally different) than the smooth blue-eyed soul of ‘Jack Talking’ that not only reminds with its title of the best funky times of the brothers Gibb. The epic ‘Heaven & Earth’ finds its natural place here as well as the glam rock overtones of ‘Fashion Bomb’ and the psychedelic wall of sound of ‘On Fire’. And how much the man enjoyed playing his Fender Stratocaster extensively! Not only in the track ‘The Devil’s Just Been Using You‘.

Ltd / Downloadcode. With his latest record, Notwist singer & guitar player, film soundtracker and label boss Markus Acher, aka Rayon, offers up a sparse, intoxicating LP of instrumentals. As the name suggests, the spaces between notes here are treated with as much gravity as the notes themselves – arpeggios spiralling upwards, conflicting yet interlocking in a dizzying overlap of time signatures. An obvious reference point is Javanese gamelan, with its ensemble of hand-beaten metallophones and bamboo flutes, pulling in all directions at once and yet, like a starling murmuration, maintaining shape as one, rippling whole. Eschewing electronic equipment, the title track sees marimbaphone, piano and vibraphone appearing to mimic a delay pedal, giving the effect of rain falling with odd regiment into a singing bowl. This melancholy but weirdly uplifting arrangement surfaces throughout the record, punctuated by mossy synth hums and subterranean rustling. Like much of Rayon’s work, “A Beat of Silence” beams across like a soundtrack for some forgotten documentary: dusty archive footage of cities being built and eroded in time-lapse seeming to flicker across the screen. Closing tracks “To the Quiet”, a tentative, almost impossibly fragile ballad, and “Kona”, a stretched and mangled wash of orchestral drone akin to Plinth or Edmund Finnis, leave the listener fully enveloped, as this incredibly sensitive work draws to a close. While Last of the Easy Riders formed last summer in Denver, the band of sonic nomads each converged high in the Rocky Mountains individually from various parts of the country. Even with dissimilar backgrounds, each of the musicians shared one common vision: to create cosmic rock 'n' roll. The outcome is the band's naturally formulated blend of raw Midwestern treble and passionate deepsouth rhythm and bass. That acoustic integrity shines bright on the group's gutsy selftitled debut EP on Agitated Records. Much like their iconic heroes in bygone countryrock outfits like The Byrds and The Band, each member contributes song credits to the new disc. The band comprises guitarist/vocalist, Christopher Minarik, Mitch Mitchum (drums, vocals), Daniel Duggan (bass, vocals) and guitarist, Bradley T Grear. "It's what makes us dynamic - four individual songwriters playing in one band," said Minarik, who refers to Last of the Easy Riders as "southwestern psychrock." The earthy, inspired track list projects the tranquility of the outdoors, or perhaps hazily driving through Joshua Tree National Park with the windows down, while a CCR cassette warmly hums in the background. It's an honest, but optimistic batch of original tunes. "It conveys the aspect of moving across the country," Minarik added. "Or overcoming past experiences and crossing into the next stages of modern adulthood." And even though this freshly pressed EP was recorded earlier this year in a remote cabin in Rollinsville, Colorado - the production and arrangements throwback to the golden days of 0s American music - back when Buck Owens still ruled Bakersfield and Gram Parsons still had a chance.
