Philadelphia’s Alex Giannascoli aka Alex G is pleased to announce his forthcoming new full-length album and his first for Domino, Beach Music, on October 9, 2015. Listen to the album’s debut track ‘Bug’ below. Beach Music was written and recorded in Giannascoli’s apartment, between the Fall of 2014 and the Spring of 2015, during breaks from touring with the likes of Speedy Ortiz, Cymbals Eat Guitars and Elvis Depressedly. While its predecessors often came in uninterrupted bursts—from his head to his Bandcamp page in a matter of hours and days—Beach Music was shaped in part by Giannascoli adapting to life as a touring musician. Songs were written within months of one another rather than all at once, with influences ranging from noise music to piano-based laments to Southern rock to the rhythmic focus of techno—whatever he happened to be most interested in at the time. “Every song is coming from a different place,” he says. “It branches off in all these directions, but it has its own sound. It’s not something I do intentionally, but I’m the common thread." The album, his seventh full-length, follows on from previous beloved albums DSU (Orchid Tapes), Trick, and Rules, which have led to a fervent cult fan base, a number of Artist To Watch designations from outlets such as Fader and Rolling Stone, and a dedicated live audience who sing along with every word. Harry 'Sweets' Edison, a smooth and suave trumpeter, was a cohort of orchestra leader Count Basie, a favourite of bandleader Nelson Riddle, and a noted backup artist for the most prominent vocalists of his time. Edison, with his energetic yet reticent blowing style, bridged a genre gap between the early classic jazz sound of Louis Armstrong and modern bebop modes. Edison, who played equally well in both styles, had a special talent for sustaining his trumpet notes and injecting each single tone with expression and soul never heard before or after. The special quality of his trumpet playing earned him the nickname 'Sweets' because of the sweetness of the tones. Likewise his ability to control the tone of his trumpet brought him to the forefront as a session musician, playing accompaniments for the most respected vocalists of his time. Edison was a true pioneer of jazz. An old-time homespun boy, born in Columbus, Ohio, he never knew with certainty even the year of his birth. According to his best knowledge, he was born in 1919, although some sources list the date as early as 1915. Edison knew even less about his own father, a Native American of the Hopi (Apache) tribe and a drifter who stayed only a few weeks with Edison’s mother before taking to the road and was rarely heard from afterward. Edison spent his early years with an uncle, who was a coal miner and a farmer, in Louisville, Kentucky. It was Edison’s uncle who taught the boy to play the pump organ and to play scales on an old cornet. Whispery Seattle singer-songwriter Noah Gundersen has announced he's set to follow up his 2014 debut full-length Ledges with another inward-looking, introspective LP. His Carry the Ghost materializes August 21 through Dine Alone/Dualtone. A press release explains that the sophomore set from Gundersen includes 13 songs that try to determine our "purpose," with the songwriter "searching for answers about the nature of man and the meaning of our relationships." In the end, he apparently discovered that life can be pretty open-ended. "This album grew out of a desire to know myself, to know how I was supposed to live," Gundersen said in a statement. "And in that process, I realized that maybe there is no 'supposed to be.'" The collection was cut at Seattle's Litho Studio, with Gundersen serving as producer and esteemed studio figure Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, Father John Misty, the Walkmen) hopping on the project as a mixer. It's opening track is an airy piano-driven ballad called "Slow Dancer," which, it's explained, is about the healing process following the end of a relationship.
