Decibels Of Gratitude" is the eighth full-length studio album by this long running Massachusetts ensemble. The roots of Major Stars go back to the 1979 formation of Crystalized Movements, through to their early '90's successor Magic Hour. Upon that band's breakup guitarists Wayne Rogers and Kate Village formed Major Stars, which kept Magic Hour's tendency toward songs spiked with lengthy instrumental excursions but added a hard rock angle not usually present in the Hour's hazier sound. Major Stars released four albums as a quartet before expanding to a sextet with 2003's "Syntoptikon," moving secret weapon Tom "Luxurious Bags" Leonard to third guitar and adding Dave Dougan and Casey Keenan as the rhythm section. Another change was adding a singer, thus finally allowing all of the guitar players to concentrate solely on six-string matters. They followed this with two albums for the Drag City label that presented a more stripped down aesthetic with shorter, riff-driven songs. On "Decibels Of Gratitude" (their first album with new singer Hayley Thompson-King) they stretch it out again, delivering 5 songs in just over 40 minutes but as always keeping an eye on the balance between folk-rock and freakout. What to say about a band who continuously claims Otis Rush and Buddy Guy as it's primary influences, but usually finds their records filed in the "noise/experimental" bin? Any mention of Major Stars tends to send some scurrying for the most obscure psychedelic references, but one need look no further than the Who or Cream to find the primary ingredients of melodic songwriting combined with an over-the-top instrumental assault. As a few noticed, the title of their last album "Return To Form" wasn't entirely intended to be tongue-in-cheek. Their music seems to be more "psychedelic era" than "psychedelic," and they themselves like to just be thought of as a Rock group (early '70's capitalization intact). But there has always been something different about their arrangement of common influences compared to their contemporaries, and over the past fifteen years they have developed a loyal base of followers who seem to quite like the way they put things together. There's no way to know why CBS Records unceremoniously dumped Rotomagus and the Chico Magnetic Band after one single apiece; suffice to say that decision was a poor one, as both bands have (quite rightly) developed a cult-like following over the years. All in all, the artistic trajectory of Rotomagus was peculiar: they started out as a harmony pop-psych band, shifted through a brief Jimi Hendrix-ian interlude (`The Sky Turns Red'), straight into a Vanilla Fudge groove; they then went down in flames as a hair-raising monolithic heavy rock power trio. On Julian Cope's excellent Head Heritage web-site, the Seth Man raves about Rotomagus thus: "The first time I heard this track (`Fighting Cock'), I did not freak out. I merely walked into a nearby closet and screamed my head off for a minute solid, beat the floor and ripped my t-shirt... then I cowered when it hit me: this thing came out in 1971? Before "Raw Power"?! I just lost my mind... The only thing that predates this monster in terms of being a full-on amassing of all things heavy are all the many key points on Sir Lord Baltimore's "Kingdom Come" LP and THAT'S it, brother." French magazine Rock & Folk was succinct: "Rotomagus create an emotional music, violent, even aggressive." Violent. Aggressive. Intense. On this disc we bring you the entire output of Rotomagus, including an album-length demo from 1971, the band's tumultuous, thunderous swansong, recorded as a super jam (live with no overdubs). Our Lion Productions and Martyrs of Pop edition of Rotomagus comes replete with a bi-lingual 32-page booklet, with the entirety of the Seth Man's article on the band, plus the band's history in both English and French, printed on FSC recycled, chlorine-free, 100% post-consumer fiber paper, manufactured using biogas energy. Hard to believe this is all pre-1971, as much of the demo is not just proto punk but proto hardcore-with enough fiery attitude to make you want to scream along. Anyone with ears will hear fried-Hendrixisms all over this thing. It was the most ambitious TestosterTunes release to date: a 3-song, double-LP by the three men of Philadelphia's BIRDS OF MAYA. Called Ready To Howl and it's the soundtrack to an upcoming feature length film of the same name. Ready To Howl, the film, deals with one dude's struggles in- and outside of polite society. According to the producer, "the order of events is something like... getting off of work, partying, a parking lot bottle fight with a marine, driving drunk, the purchase of a deadly snake for purposes of revenge, hitchhiking, off road driving, car accident, the folly of vindictiveness, and finally a physical and metaphorical ascent to the highest point of the mountain." Fuzzed out psychedelica, the likes of which hasn't been heard since the heyday of real rock in the 70's, oozes from the amps and tears across the landscape like some kind of lawnmower on acid. The world starts to spin; everything goes black and then several shades of purple. All that, and then the songs kick in. Formed in 2006 from a melding of the then-defunct and highly regarded Swedish bands Half Man and Mothercake, Skånska Mord was the next logical step in the natural evolution of both bands. A crossroads where Jönsson, Berglin & Englund's more metal inclined Mothercake fell into the swampy blues rock of Bengtsson & Carlsson's Half Man (just imagine a perfect world where Seattle's Green River happened in reverse and you'll get the idea). Blended rhythm section rarely sound this in sync, but one can easily chalk that up to the common ground shared by all the members. First, the fact that they all come from the same place, Örkelljunga, a small village in the south of Sweden. In fact, the three older members (Jan Bengtsson, Patric Carlsson and Patrik Berglin) have been friends since their early teenage years. Bengtsson and Carlsson in particular have been playing together for 16 years in Half Man and before that for even more years in various constellations, they've been pretty much inseparable through both their musical careers. Secondly, is their common love for old 70's hard and heavy rock. A lot of inspiration has been collected through the years much like Bengtsson's and Carlsson's sizeable collections of vintage vinyl, amongst them a kings ransom of hard rock, progressive, blues and psychedelia. In some way this shared musical background has help give birth to a special sound, which is uniquely Örkelljungan. "Paths To Charon" is the band's follow up to their critically acclaimed 2010 debut "The Last Supper," A record that served as a great launching point for the boys, and now, they have really brought it with their newest effor. There are plenty of thick hypnotic blues infused layers of rawk, (just like their debut), but this time around, it is even more powerful. Skanska Mord is charging ahead in 2012, only they think it is 1972... And this my friends, is never a bad thing when it comes to the fine art of Classic Rock n' Roll.
