It's difficult to capture the magic of a live show. I hope that this attempt will come very close." Luka Bloom doesn't have to worry, with Amsterdam he has managed to capture the electrifying atmosphere of a stage appearance in the Dutch metropolis on sound recordings. On February 11th 2002 he gave a fantastic concert in front of 1,500 fans, some of whom flew in from all over the world. Only with an acoustic guitar around his neck did he fascinate the audience from the first note on and created a wonderful atmosphere, which was an unforgettable experience for the people on site and can be felt at home via compact disc even in the four walls. Great! On the frosty winter evening, the folk musician from Ireland warmed up the souls of the fans with songs from all phases of his career. Kevin Barry Moore, who chose the stage name Luka Bloom in 1987 and used Suzanne Vegas'"My Name Is Luka" and the character Bloom in James Joyce's novel Ulysses, sang for example the early work "Delirious" (from the 1990 album Riverside), which deals with his years in New York and the experiences of many compatriots as emigrants in the distance. In "Fertile Rock" (Turf, 1994), the passionate conservationist from Newbridge, County Kildare, addressed the fight for the preservation of the endangered Mullaghmore in the Burren landscape. And in "Monsoon" (Between The Mountain And The Moon, 2002) he compared love and sex in lyrical verses with the elemental force of a tropical storm. In addition to ten of his own compositions, the little brother of singer/songwriter Christy Moore also had three foreign titles in his program. Thus he interpreted "Make You Feel My Love" written by Bob Dylan and Bob Marley's reggae number "Natural Mystic" in his typical, warm-hearted manner. And he also played the ballad "Sunny Sailor Boy" by Mike Scott (Waterboys). When Bloom tells about the sailor who spellboundly listens to the song of a mermaid, your heart opens up. If you have never had the opportunity to hear Luka Bloom sing in live performance, then this is the next best thing. Luka Bloom is a major singer/songwriter talent. He writes thoughtful and carefully crafted lyrics and sings them with equal care and attention. In my opinion, he is one of the few singers able to combine spirituality and a great earthy substance. I always feel that there is a freedom and joy in his singing style. There is a lot to appreciate in his work. This album is one that you can return to again and again. Every track on this cd is excellent. Albert Mangelsdorff, the German trombonist who died aged 76 last year, helped burst open the sonic possibilities and athleticism of a famously lethargic instrument. German label Skip Records has issued the 1979 Hamburg live recording with Norwegian bass star Arild Andersen and Swiss drummer Pierre Favre that Mangelsdorff called "the most thrilling trio recording" of his career. It sat in the vaults for a quarter-century, but the music is so vivacious, you'd have thought they could have heard it fizzing away deep in the box. Both Mangelsdorff and Andersen bring a remarkable lightness and delicacy to their heavyweight instruments. The title track's rocking riff hints at Mangelsdorff's trad-jazz apprenticeship, his trombone descending to a tuba's depths, and the free-floating Soulbird mingles didgeridoo-like huffing, Mangelsdorff's famous blown-and-sung harmony playing and Andersen's lithe bass variations. The threesome rockets through most of its awesome arsenal on the 14-minute Warbling Warbler, from bop-swing and free improv to timbral adventures that sound as if six musicians were playing rather than three. The themes are whimsically gripping; they make terrific springboards for improvising, and Favre is both a percussion sorcerer and a lightly dancing swinger. Trombone, bass and drums may not sound like a promising combination, but this is cutting-edge jazz-improv with an idiosyncratically buoyant lyricism. Record Label: Skip Records Style: Jazz

Tony Lakatos is one of the most innovative musicians of the new generation, who extend the range from the traditionally virtuosic treatment of the violin or the acoustic guitar in the Gypsy Swing to the areas of improvisation or the fully composed free form with inclusion of far-reaching roots. And, not to forget, he uses the saxophone - an instrument that enables him to visit the origins of Gypsy music in Rajasthan, India. "Gypsy Colors" is the current album by Tony Lakatos and his outstanding ensemble in every position - and it is a wonderful walk through styles and cultures. In "Troublant Bolero", he also uses the Cimbalon known from the Hungarian picture book culture of the "Zigan" chapels there, and follows the adaptation of the traditional Roma folk song "Duj-Duj Demla Devla Phaka Duj" a relaxed piece in the finest modern Jazz with Bossa elements. The album is an acoustic treasure, a pleasurable experience in many colors that gives its protagonist ample space to present himself in all its virtuoso - a tastefully crafted package with many delightful surprises. For example, Monika Rostas (almost almost uncommon) with her charming voice Horizonte, Ferenc Snetberger, who once again shows his rank on the acoustic guitar, Roby Lakatos, a real primate on the violin and cool times Swinging Szakcsi Bela Lakatos at the piano. A jazz album, which does not allow a genre assignment and thus achieves a special validity. Here, musicians under the restrained leadership of Tony Lakatos on the tenor and soprano saxophone and the excellent rhythmic background of Andras Lakatos at the drums at the work, which make a very sustained attention. Listening to the key title "Mr. Fried" with the eyes closed, conveys a jazz pleasure that can always be compared with Paul Desmond.
