The Underdogg' is DJ Tre's Hyperdub debut EP for Hyperdub. He contributed two brilliant tracks to our DJ Rashad tribute set 'Next Life', but compared to other long term members of the Teklife footwork crew, he hasn't released much, so we're very happy to bring him out to play again here. Tre has been about since the early days, born and raised on the South Side of Chicago. Encouraged by Rashad and his partner DJ Spinn, he has been making tracks since 1999, over a decade before footwork's ascent to global popularity. On this EP his sound, for the most part, is rooted in the speedy 4/4 of juke. It features a sparse and minimalist take on footwork but he's got a knack of adding in tight little switches and details that keep the tracks moving as essential dance floor weapons. The EP starts with 'It's House Hybrid', which has its musical roots in Chip E's 'It's House', one of the very earliest house tracks. It's a tried and tested dancefloor devastator on dubplate, built on a crackling and hiccuping juke 4/4 which grows in intensity, until an Amen drum break cracks it open and joins the kick in the onslaught. 'A Hammond Jam' matches a moody organ with rolling bass and drums. 'Get Dat Ass Up!' bounces against a twitching melody. 'Ta Rhodez Jam!' micro-edits a delicate Rhodes piano sample into flickering shapes against switching 8 bar patterns of drums that go from rolling to soca-like pulses with whistles. Essential tools for DJs on the hyperplane.

Laurel Halo returns to Hyperdub for her third LP with a fresh approach and a new sound. Routed out of the electronic abstraction of 2015's In Situ - but with clear reference to 2012's sleeper-hit Quarantine - Dust is an album revolving around loose and languid songs;
warped, sun-filled, melted and at times, heavy-hearted and obscure. Recorded over a period of two years, the writing process began at EMPAC in upstate New York in January 2015. With access to microphones, percussion, keys and a wide range of routings, Laurel spent days alone in the cavernous space, later inviting musicians Eli Keszler and Lafawndah to join her there. Those sessions would eventually become this album: a collection of breezy, broken songs, based on woody instrumentation, sub bass and restless, intricate electronics. Earnest songwriting meets with modal cut-up strategies, improvisational playing with higrade digital dust. Tactile and fibrous throughout the record, the vocals and percussion coalesce and breathe life into each other. Swung grooves eddy and collapse;
acoustic drums are warped into sensual, febrile melodies. The lyrics are themselves bricolage, without a specific narrator or place in time. They slip in and out of view, something that is visualised in the album's inner panel. Extending the influence, the album opener 'Sun To Solar' is an adaptation of 'Servidao de Passagem' by Brazilian concrete poet Haroldo de Campos. In line with the album's sound, Dust is 'Laurel Halo' as a flexible cast of characters. Filled with dialogue, the album helms an interchangeable ensemble of vocalists and musicians, featuring vocals from Klein, Lafawndah, and Michael Salu, as well as musicians such as Eli Keszler, Craig Clouse ($hit and $hine), Julia Holter, Max D, Michael Beharie and Diamond Terrifier. Laurel's omnivorous influences play out in mutated fashion - coalesced, unfettered and inclusive - a broad musical palette free from entrenched modes, catalysed by digital production that could only happen in 2017.

It's time for the Procurator ! We're happy to announce our first release from Edinburgh born and bred producer Proc Fiskal - otherwise known as Joe Powers. Like a Scottish relation to the recent faster Grime productions Lewisham MC Novelist has coined 'Ruff Sound', Proc Fiskal ups the energy of the stark cubist rhythms of the early Grime of Wiley and Ruff Sqwad by accelerating and retooling them to fit the faster 160bpm grid, engineering a delirious hybrid that also subtly makes explicit the relationship between Grime and Jungle and Happy Hardcore. The EP starts with '£', which is the most classically 'Grime' sounding of the tracks, with 8 bar switches, chord stabs, sino-motifs and a bassline that ripples underneath. 'Lamentation' combines airy swing, rolling percussion and chunky dubwise bouncing bass that recalls Digidub. 'Skulka' opens up the flipside with surreal whizzing, wheezing and gunshots, dropping into a rolling melodic bassline and caffeinated strings. 'Acidic Hoes' has a bassline that bubbles and warps with an airy melody whirling over the top and incidental coughs and sword clashes. Proc Fiskal's debut EP is joyfully aggressive and an energetic contrast to the slowing down of most contemporary Grime, plus it mixes into Footwork really well too

The 'Move Out' EP is a masterclass in a distinctly soulful, dusky footwork sound with a melancholic undercurrent that's crossed with a precise eye for detail. 'Burnin Ya Boa' ft DJ Manny opens the EP with a crisp, micro-edited arrangement of tumbling piano, dubbed out chants and a heart-tugging woodwind melody playing hide and seek with racing, ever-changing footwork drum and bass patterns. 'Go 2 Sleep' ft DJ Earl rolls with a narcoleptic woody percussion loop, and a vocal urging "Please go to sleep", a request which is challenged with drill sounds, rave stabs, energetic footwork drums, and soft bass tones. The super minimal 'I Need I Wantft DJ Manny & DJ Spinn takes a house acapella and spins it into something more urgent and compulsive, the vocalist's insistent, addicted pleas met with a downcast, tumbling melody. 'Move Out' ends the EP on a brighter note, with big Detroit techno chords and a warm Moog-like solo-cum-melody. Okzharp and Manthe Ribane return with their second EP "Tell Your Vision", a call and response between Manthe's vocals and Okzharp's production. Both bring their unique energies to the mix, manifesting in a raw confidence of new moods and temperatures that were brought out from their first taste of touring and living on autopilot. The EP's title is a reference to its opener, "Teleported", which was created in Okzharp's car on an exploratory drive through London and inspired by the art and energy they came across. The track opens with a ferocious bass line, with Manthe's rumbling vocals rolling rhythmically over the top. She takes us with her as she lets the music possess her as if dancing;
quickly spitting the vocals back out, urging the listener to "Tell your vision!". A much more gentle and reflective turn comes on second track [1] U'. Okzharp's slow and soft lullaby melody and Manthe's warm and inspiring lyrics tug at the heartstrings. In the upbeat and playful "Maybe This", Manthe's vocals flit between a hum that softly swells over the top of Okzharp's spacey melody, into an energised and bouncing rap. The EP rounds off with the warm anthem "Piki Piki", with the chorus sung in the South African Sepedi dialect. Okzharp's long synth lines draw us in with Manthe's vocals melting and blending into the track. "Piki Piki" has an unmistakably positive vibe, which becomes emphasised when Manthe switches to English, with lyrics that advocate self-affirmation and self-love.

Fatima Al Qadiri returns to Hyperdub for her 2nd album Brute. Made from the perspective of her transnational experience, her new record explores the theme of authority, the relationship between police, citizens and protest worldwide, particularly of her adopted home in the United States. Musically, Brute teeters between rage and despair, manifesting in restrained percussion, sampled and processed recordings of urban protest, and the signature minor progressions that distinguish Al Qadiri's body of work. Reflecting on the carceral state (Oubliette), the militarization of police (Endzone, Curfew), the fragile boundaries between defence and the deadly use of force (Battery, 10-34), and the relentless violation of the dignity of protesters and activists (Breach, Blows, Fragmentation), the record is a sombre tribute to lost life and agency. The album art is a detail of the sculpture Po-Po (2015) by Josh Kline, heavily altered by art director Babak Radboy. Reimagining a popular children's show character as a militarized SWAT officer with implanted surveillance technology, Radboy subjects Po-Po to extreme image processing, situating the installation photo as a still from a fictitious blockbuster. As a tribute to those on the front lines of protest and a condemnation of neoliberal fascism, Brute provides a chilling sonic backdrop to a world of normalised brutality, a painful illumination of the facade of democracy.

Okzharp (pronounced "o-k-zarp") is a project that pivots around South African born London producer Gervase Gordon, who still maintains strong links to Capetown and Johannesburg and the creative work coming from there. "Dumela 113" - translated as "Hello 113" - is a suite of house mutations that feature the vocals of Manthe Ribane, an artist who runs the creative studio in Capetown called Studio113 with her two siblings, while her own work spans dance (she toured as a dancer with Die Antwoord), modelling, styling, film and photography. "Dumela 113" started to take form when the South African director and photographer Chris Saunders introduced Manthe to Gervase. Chris and Gervase had started making a film together, called "Ghost Diamond", which Manthe styled, choreographed, and starred, in. Consequently two tracks on this EP, "Fede" and "Sizzr", are also from the film's soundtrack. "Dear Ribane"'s lyrics are sung in the language of Tshwana and are about being a performer and working on shoots, and the complexities of understanding different kinds of beauty and being a vessel for other people's ideas of beauty, mocking a row of models with the line [1]Ostrich 1, Ostrich 2, Ostrich 3, 4, 5, 6, 7", The lyrics open out slowly over a sharp kick drum as a minimal keyboard creeps around Manthe's poised vocals. "Sizzr", delivered in English, is a positive mission statement about living in the moment, standing up for what you believe and not letting bad vibes get to you, sung with vocoder over bittersweet but positive keys, flipping from beatless to heads-down house. Inspired by a childhood game, Fede's lyrics play with the question 'How are you?' and all the different ways this can be interpreted, Manthe's voice glistening with android fx over driving toms and deep bass. The EP finishes with "Glonet", an instrumental of dubstep-indebted house with a wistful oriental melody that shifts gears between half and double speed.

Nothing' is Kode9's first solo album and is about nothing. The album throws horror soundtracks, sampled library and j-pop records into a no man's land between grime, early dubstep and Chicago footwork. Mostly instrumental, it zigzags between hypnotic, downcast loops, growling drones, and jagged cut-ups of androids gone haywire, threaded through twitchy, transatlantic rhythms and sub-bass inaudible through your laptop speakers. Building slowly, but more upbeat than previous albums, many of these tracks have more in common with Kode9's recent singles from the last few years than they do with his two previous albums with collaborator The Spaceape, 'Memories of the Future' (2006) and 'Black Sun' (2012) Yet 'Nothing' is haunted both by The Spaceape's presence (he died in 2014 after a prolonged battle with cancer), on 'Third Ear Transmission', a communiqué from a zone of digital immortality, and his absence, on 'Void', whose spaces were originally intended for the vocalist, and 'Nothing Lasts Forever', which closes the album with a 9 minute silence.

DJ Taye is one of Chicago Footwork crew Teklife's youngest producers, stepping up with his first full release for Hyperdub after some impressive tracks on the Hyperdub "10.1" and "Next Life" compilations. The "Break It Down" EP is invigorating from the word go. On the relentless stargate of 'Go Away' with DJ Paypal, smooth funk is chipmunked and chopped into a thousand digital shivers and starbursts over a tough grid of drums. "That Love" featuring Tripletrain and DJ Manny is all romantic coos and seesawing keyboard riffs, micro-edited, stretched, chopped and spring -loaded in and out of comprehension. "XTCC" in contrast is minimal and mournful, with the repeated phrase "There's a void where there should be ecstasy" over drums that cut from half to double time, over a blanket of bass with sad chords slowly coming in towards the end. "Break It Down" flips a ferocious yet minimal vocal cut up, coiled around a bristling vortex of detailed drum edits, before a goofy melody brings it to a close.

Spinn has appeared on lots of tracks with DJ Rashad, but this is his debut EP debut for Hyperdub, and the sound of a producer at the top of his game. From the opener ,Throw It Back", DJ Spinn effortlessly consolidate energies from all over into footwork"s 160bpm grid, a rough, creeping acid line rubbing against chopped and screwed rap, over a system-destroying hip hop beat, before a huge drop heralds in double-time kicks. ,The Future Is Now" is an intense minimal track with a gnarly repetitive melody that bleeps somewhere between acid and 8-bit dancehall, before the drums roll into double pace and a vortex of synths build up into a frantic double-speed, with claps keeping pace at half time. ,Off That Loud" is a tribute to weed, rapped lyrics layered and chopped into stuttering patterns against 160bpm drums over a bed of the most gentle rhodes chords. The final track features the talented Detroit MC Danny Brown and is co-produced by the late DJ Rashad. Rashad, Spinn and Danny hit it off while on tour in the US and Danny recorded this rap for them, celebrating footwork Chicago roots. Chopping between jungle breaks and bass, a high speed jazz guitar and Danny chorus over footwork kicks and bass, it a chant-a-long anthem for the scene and the finale to an exciting debut.

Her first release since last year's "Wait Til' Night" album, which featured synths and live instruments meshed with Cooly's vocals, this EP by contrast presents five tracks of house music, the Cooly G way : stripped down to the essentials, dark, and built for maximum soundsystem impact. These tunes have a steely grid more common to techno, but at house's slower pace. Kicking off is the moody "Trippin B", with a spiralling three note bassline and a quick dubbed out sample of Cooly's voice, over tough rolling drums, finessing the art of keeping it simple and effective. "Booboo" is all shivery male / female vocal samples and slip-sliding drum patterns that subtly warp and transition. "Flange City" runs a see-sawing acidic five note scale over shaky, spacious claps, a rolling drum pattern and a deep sub bass kick. "Waybay" featuring Marc Perrineau is the most straight-up track here, a spooky dive into scratchy, scissoring rhythms, with a subtle panning melody over dubby bass. "Horrors In The Dance" is a wild workout, with strange shapes thrown across bouncing drums that stop and start, build and drop with dub sirens thrown into the deep spaces in between. "Armz House" is powerful and direct return to the dancefloor for Cooly G.
