Austin, Texas, 1980: In the dark ages before SXSW, there was a bar called Raul's that was the center of the Austin punk scene. Actually, it basically was the whole scene and The Dicks were born from it. The Dicks made a big splash with their first single, Hate the Police, and then recorded Kill From the Heart just before vocalist Gary Floyd moved to San Francisco. In those magical couple years of the Dicks' infancy in Texas, they made a dynamic impact on many people with a stellar live show that mixed punk and politics. Alongside Floyd, the original lineup was guitarist Glen Taylor, bassist Buxf Parrot and drummer Pat Deason. They imploded in 1983. Alternative Tentacles is proud to present a very necessary reissue of the band's beloved first LP. If you aren't familiar with Kill From the Heart, then you need to be aware of this bona-fide classic of Reagan-era punk-a record that inspired many of the artists that inspired you. Decomposition, the second full-length by US / UK / German collective Cross Stitched Eyes, follows in the tradition of anarchist punk and death rock (Rudimentary Peni, Cortex, The Mob, and Killing Joke). Embracing the many irrational and visceral shades of this style's darkest corners, the album decidedly rejects traditional copy-and-paste guidelines of musical conformity with a puncturing attitude. The harsher side of Cross Stitched Eyes derives directly from the band's artistic influences and its deconstructed presentation. Decomposition's leadoff track "We Follow" evokes reactions to seemingly unchanging lifestyles with a vitriolic diatribe. Others like "Animated Corpse" and "Earth's Defiant" display a lyrical depth seldom heard these days. At times benign, at others aggressive, Decomposition explores the complicated relationship between dark and light. Repeated spins are unavoidable. Cross Stitched Eyes features members of Zygote, Alaric, U.K. Subs, Smart Pills, Anger of Bacteria and Endrophobia. Don't judge them by their other activities because they all bring a special component to this multinational collective. Tim Shapland produces all the band's recordings and captures the urgency of their sound; he also shreds on the guitar.
