Yep, it’s been longer-than-the-average since the mix-comp world received its last Rielity check. Not without noble cause though! The hands of its mixer-in-chief have been anything but idle in the interim. The release of its third edition, two + years back, coincided with the launch of Sied’s Rielism Records imprint. The intervening months and years have all passed with one goal in mind for “Rielisms”: musical self-sufficiency. Full developmental focus was applied and its results are writ large across the July 2017 release of “Rielism Vol. 4”. Reflecting the growth of the label, Sied expands the “Rielism” program to its natural conclusion. Featuring 55 tracks (95% of which are sourced from Rielism Records), it’s become – for the first time – a triple mix release. Naturally, it includes work from many a known-name studio-operator, with Richard Durand, Misja Helsloot, Midway, Cold Blue, Robert Nickson and Arctic Moon just a few of the frontline producers channelling music into its system. This album though is every bit as much about introducing tomorrow’s trance stars today. Respectively, you can also expect a wealth-of from currently-making-waves acts like Nikolauss, Type 41, Black XS, Perrelli & Mankoff, Sam Laxton, Fredd Moz and a small army of others. To the nth degree, the album echoes both Sied’s renowned mix-style and his trance orientation. None of your casual, slow-inclining mix progressions. Once T.F.F. & Steve Carniel’s ‘Cyclone’ overture has got you strapped in, it’s straight down to the serious business of lighting floor fires. Fresh-off-the-mixing desk, Mix 1 is quickly marked by the 2017 Rielism Remix of Sied’s breakout smasher “Rush”. In hot pursuit come the Perrelli & Mankoff produced/Sara Houston-sung “Lingering Mind”, Nikolauss’ halcyon “Avalon”, “Nyctophilia” from Colombia’s Steve Dekay and Garry Noon’s magnificent “Magna”. Passing its midpoint, ‘Be There For You’ by Dark Fusion & Amy Kirkpatrick strikes a major chord, as does Sajjad Zakaria with “The Power Of Will”, “Impact”, care of Miroslav Vrlik and Chris SX’s “Reflections”. On bringing this fourth dose of “Rielism” to fans, Sied said: “Not for nothing is “Rielism Vol 4” arriving a year “overdue”. Instead of contacting the establishment and getting music that would already be released before the compilation was out, I went on a truly epic hunt for music. Alongside Rielism’s label manager, we signed over 60 tracks from some of the world’s brightest talents, many of which you’ll hear on this compilation. It took me well over 7 months to compile and an additional 2 or more to create and finalize its mixes. In terms of comparable experiences though, I’ve not had a more enjoyable or fulfilling one. Hopefully people listening to “Rielism Vol. 4″ will enjoy taking the journey, as much as I did in creating it.” Mix 2 of “Rielism Vol 4” doesn’t check the pace but for a minute, as “Solitaire” – Sied’s latest vocal number (alongside Leaving Atlantis singer Signe G) nudges the fahrenheit further. White-knuckle sonics come hard and fast, trading one first-half ace for another. Robert Nickson’s dazzling “Heliopause”, “Break Away” from Rene Ablaze and Aylin, Type 41’s thrilling “Ascension” and “Steps Of Eternity” from Para X each take their time to shine. Tipping over its halfway point, it fields the Perrelli & Mankoff treatment of Sied and Nicole McKenna’s classic “Stealing Time”, which in turn opens the doorway to yet more Rielism Records treasure. Steve Dekay’s “Eros” and Durand X Van Riel’s “Rivella” blaze, before Mike Sanders’ reboot of Sied’s “Sirena” pops the mercury. A testament to just how industrious an outlet Rielism Records has become, the digital version of the release is crowned by a killer bonus mix. Arctic Moon’s “Nocturnal Horizons” and Cold Blue’s “On The Outside” bookend 7Wonders “Momentum”, while “The Reason” (Sied and Jennifer Rene’s late-2016 collab) receives a Skylex remix treatment. The Niko Zografos and Nick Callaghan’s reworks of Midway’s “Cobra” and “Electronic Malfunction” from Ton TB respectively see “Rielism Vol. 4” arrive at its final, vertiginous apex. ‘Rielism’ by name, realism by nature – this album is the very embodiment of Sied’s behind the decks experience. On his process for the eighth ‘Magic Island’ compilation series, Roger says: “I‘ve again spent 4 months working on this new edition, going through more than 600 tracks to pick out those special ones, as well including a couple of my own new tracks. All the tracks/mixes are again 100% exclusively handcrafted for this album. This time my wide range of sound selection goes from chilled and deep Balearic house tracks, to underground tech and sexy tribal grooves, before shifting up to proggier vibes on Disc 01. Disc 02 kicks off very melodic and then turns into uplifting euphoria. I mixed and recorded this album during my tour in Australia. City credits go to Sydney and Melbourne”. With the ascension of the second disc, “Music For Balearic People Vol.8” moves seamlessly from a day to night-time footing. The Juliet Lyons-sung/Bilal El Aly produced “After You”, “Santa Monica Sunset” from Denis Sender and Roger’s MI8 Mix of JES’ “Photograph” all showcase Magic Island’s clubbier virtues. Elevating its altitude higher are the latest from Dirkie Coetzee & VioLika’s “Adagio In F Minor”, “Colour My Eyes” courtesy of Mark Norman and David Broaders epic “Giant’s Causeway”. In its latter stages, Roger & Inger Hansen’s choir-led revision of “Castles In The Sky” captivates the mix before “Fallen Angel” from Rene Ablaze and Pierre Pienaar “Emirembe” brings it to its rapture-filled zenith. Everest , the legendary artist Paul Oakenfold and Insomniac’s dedicated trance brand, Dreamstate, teamed up to release a monumental 20-track compilation, Dreamstate Volume One. ‘Trance is back’. Least so they say. So what are we going to do with all this future? We don’t know. But we think we know someone who does. It’s the same sage who, oh, about 5 years or so ago saw renaissance through the spyglass and via his Pure Trance revolution helped turned prophecy into reality. What then does Solarstone do for an encore? Well, we can’t tell you all there is to know about that today. We can at least tell you the start of it though. And that begins here, with this piece of music. What occurs musically on ‘A State Of Mind’ largely defies description. It’s complex, labyrinthine and ornate, transcending, to the greatest degree, customary adjectives. Suffice to say that over 10 minutes, ‘State’s Original Mix subtly, yet spellbindingly channels themes, tones and threads from trance’s most established, hallowed bedrock. It reinterprets those elements into something not merely contemporary, but moreover timeless. A track that could have been made last year, this or next. Time flies. Especially when you’re doing what you love, and that’s undeniably the case for Mark Sherry and his radio show. Weekly, for nigh on 10 years, his Outburst outreach has done more than any other to develop and advance the nexus between trance and techno. Mark has been assiduous in his calibrations - edging its tonal needle back to emphasize its sometimes-overshadowed techno end. This judicious approach has paid righteous dividends, marking him out and seeing him achieve the type of rebirth only a handful of trance operators have experienced. Life. There are few guarantees. A Pure Trance event however is one of them. Indeed one you can bet your night on. Zero genre hybridizations, no clunky stylistically convulsions and an outright ban on artistic vanity - all fitted as standard. And, as ever, maintaining the highest vigilance over this virtuosity is P.T.’s mastermind and arch arbiter of trance purity, Solarstone. Year on year for the last five, his movement has shifted tectonically from the trance fringes to the epicentre of the scene. Once the sole preserve of its disenfranchised, it’s now the place that the trance centreground calls home. To mark 5 years of helping put the music back on the righteousness path, through its ‘V5’ release, Pure Trance is raising its game, upping its ante and – again - kicking things up a notch! While stylistically Pure will forever mean Pure, its latitude for mood, tone, feel and tempo has few limits. In 2016, Pure Trance the album has been recast in the image of Pure Trance the night. It‘s moved from a twin to a three-disc/mix, giving it the ability to comprehensively reflect the beginning-to end experience. From the slopes of trance progressive to the peakier ridges of melodic & uplifting, through to its hard-rocking pinnacle, ‘PTV5’ illustrates it in - near enough - real time. Starting the arc of the night is Brenden ‘Forerunners’ LaBonte. His opening mix lays the ‘V5’ groundwork in coolly galactic fashion. It’s packed with the cream of the current moodier, spacier, more ether-steeped crop, including much from Pure Trance’s own Progressive label wing. Among its 16 cuts is track & remix work from Gai Barone, Nick Stoynoff, Namatjira, Leo G, Horizons and others. It also the dais for Brenden’s latest cut ‘Prism’ and the first Forerunners x Solarstone collaboration, ‘Dying Star’. On delivering his mix, Forerunners says: “I am excited for fans to experience the full spectrum of Pure Trance in ‘V5’. Laying the foundation properly in disc 1 for Solarstone & Sneijder to build upon was key. A lot of passion and preparation went into these discs to ensure we created a lasting piece of audio art that encapsulated the essence of Pure Trance.” Quickening the tempo, upping the beauty and embracing the harmonics, Solarstone comparably brings much new material from Pure Trance’s mainline label to his mix. Throughout its runtime you’ll find music from Giuseppe Ottaviani, Simon Bostock, Suncatcher, Peter Steele, Russel G and others. He also uses his 2016 mix to debut his ‘Lifeline’ team-up with Ferry Tayle and the Amir Hussain and UDM mixes of – respectively - ‘Release’ and ‘Lost Hearts’. Commenting on the Pure Trance’s album’s development, Solarstone says: “Volume 5 is a wonderful three disc journey which encapsulates the #KeepItPure club experience. From the deeper progressive side of the Pure Trance sound to my uplifting selection & finally Sneijder’s tougher, end-of-the-night tailored madness!” Bringing this night of purity to a suitably thumping conclusion, Sneijder pushes Pure Trance’s needle into the red. Through the Darren Porter remix of The Space Brothers & Mark Sherry ‘Let It Come’ and the Voolgarizm rework of ‘Thunderstruck’ by Mario Piu’s, it also sees him pay deck-service to some of the scene’s earliest leading lights. On joining Pure Trance V5’s mixers, Sneijder says: “I'm a huge fan of the Pure Trance movement and all it stands for. If it feels like Eco has fallen somewhat release-quiet of late, well it’s not without good reason. Until a few years ago a veritable dynamo, no trance season was quite complete without a complement of his singles. As quixotically beautiful as their titles were intriguingly cryptic & enigmatic, ‘The Light In Your Eyes Went Out’, ‘Walkabout’, ‘A Million Sounds, A Thousand Smiles’, ‘Staring At The Sea’ and dozens of others came to rank amongst trance’s most imaginative and esoteric. Most albums have ‘a story’, but perhaps not to quite the same degree as Eco’s ‘Wolves’. Dealing with (as the New Jersey-ite puts it) “a child who is no longer satisfied with the time & place he finds himself in and decides to embrace wilderness”, it is, in part, an allegory of his disillusionment. Moreover though it’s a concerted attempt to confront it and improve it. Musically, the album tracks the arc of the ‘Wolves’ novella. Reading at roughly the same pace as it (pause-free) plays, its titles, music and lyrics, in effect, ‘illustrate’ the book. Using the wolf motif, it deals with the highs, lows, and varying trials and tribulations the boy faces. In doing so, it provides a rarely - if ever before – experienced adjunct to a music album. While the story is personal to Marcello, it’s also one that will very likely resonate with fans within the scene. To further the album’s Odyssey-like journey to completion, Eco picked up and learnt instruments he’d never previously touched (most notably, the guitar, which is prevalent in several tracks). He was also intimately involved in all facets of the concept album: writing song lyrics, creating the artwork and clothing line, as well as curating the accompanying films, and working closely with the author of the written story. Musically, this album saw him collaborate with a wide range of talents (with artists such as Driftmoon, Jennifer Rene, Gordana Markovic, Chris Severe, and Ariah Noetzel).
