Several words come to mind when listening to a release like this. Words like gnarly, raw, brutal, frenzied and more. This is music that you can imagine serial killers doing their grisly work to. Having said that, this is no mindless punk/thrash release. There is actually a bit of nous behind what this Melbourne five-piece are doing, and a mastery of a number of different styles within the extreme music spectrum. So much so, that they are actually a little difficult to categorise, for those to whom such things are important, and the term ‘extreme music’ is the only term that feels appropriate. This is far too broad these days of course, so what to do? Let’s look at it more closely. King Parrot are about as extreme as you can get whilst remaining (somewhat!) coherent, but they are too punky to be considered grindcore. At the same time, they are far too brutal to be a punk band. Philadelphia band Sadgiqacea has only two members, drummer Fred Grabosky and guitarist Evan Schaefer. But False Prism, their excellent full-length debut due May 7 on Candlelight, indicates that a limited membership doesn’t entail diminished ideas or abilities. They bridge thrash and doom, black metal and drone, field recordings and power metal into often-seamless long-form pieces. At six minutes, the record’s title cut is its shortest, but it’s an apt demonstration of the duo’s versatility. They start with a sustained and blackened sprint, downshifting toward the middle to retrench with subdural distortion and a heavy, patient march. As the song phoenixes toward its end, Sadgiqacea delivers an intriguing chimera, where serrated, sinister vocals are engraved over an instrumental that teases at but never delivers a post-rock climax. Spend some time sounding out Sadgiqacea; with a debut this interesting, it’s a name you’ll encounter again in years to come. Style: Black Metal

To research the album, and to record material, Metatron headed to the extermination camp in Poland. The album, which is said to be “an album of reflection, of sadistic murder and unspeakable cruelty administered by fellow human beings for the unsustainable reason of racial hatred”, is surmised by Metatron as thus: “It took 100 railway carriages to take 100,000 human beings to to Auschwitz-Birkenau, it needed only a few to take their ashes to the Vistula river. The name of god seems pointless here, in this abyss of inhumanity. Style: Metal
