Formed in 2002, RUINS are from Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. They blend ominous dark-death metal dynamics; powerful, menacing, melancholic, yet eerily seductive black metal styles; diverse and intense rhythmic structures; and both venomous and summoning vocal presence. The writing/recording nucleus of RUINS consists of guitarist/vocalist Alex Pope, formerly of the post-punk noise-rockers SEA SCOUTS; and drummer Dave Haley, currently also drumming with PSYCROPTIC. Both have also recorded and performed with THE AMENTA, and various other groups and projects over the last decade. Dave’s brother Joseph Haley is delivering the darkest riffs on the new album. The new album ‘Undercurrent' is a new beginning. A reexamination of the thematics in which we have worked for the first four albums. RUINS have achieved a higher order of refinement, after nearly three years in production As the title suggests, it presents an ominous and forboding sense, looming within a strict and powerful framework. Occult doom rock unit ALBEZ DUZ emerged from the dark corners of Berlin in 2006. Formed by Eugen “Impurus” Herbst initially as a one-man side project, the band’s ominous debut was recorded in 2009 with singer Lars Kaeding. Following Kaeding’s death however, the band stepped into the shadows for the next three years. With a lingering fire and purpose, Herbst continued to write for ALBEZ DUZ and, after an exhaustive search, crossed paths with Alfonso Brito whose voice seemed destined for the project. In September 2014, the duo brought the band’s second album The Coming Of Mictlan to life via Iron Bonehead Records and Archaic Sound. They began performing live shortly after. ALBEZ DUZ — old High German for “swan” (albez) and “noisiness” or “rush” (duz) — has since shared the stage with iconic acts such as Primordial and Swans as well as other rising talent including Bölzer, Ascension, and Hexvessel. In a short time, the Berliners established themselves as a force in the European underground and elicited high praise from both critics and audiences alike. ALBEZ DUZ recently completed its third full-length album, the thundering Wings Of Tzinacan, at The Source Studios Munich with producer and audio engineer Michael Zech (Secrets Of The Moon, Triptykon, Ascension etc.) at the helm. Guitarist Julia Neuman has joined their ranks, solidifying the band as an unstoppable power trio. With a twilight performance at the prestigious Speckjaga Funkenflug Festival already checked off the band’s list in 2016, and other appearances scheduled, ALBEZ DUZ is burning its flame higher and brighter, ready to cast a spell on the globe and initiate a new chapter in doom. As implied by the title of the album, IV: Beyond the Reef of Sanity is the fourth full-length release produced by Swedish Kayser and delivered by French Listenable Records. Now, this is the second time that I have had the pleasure of receiving a release from Kayser and I must say that they have really stepped it up. Sure, the last album was great. But this one is downright fantastic. Still sticking to the somewhat traditional Thrash Metal routine, which I would describe as short, (somewhat) controlled aggression coupled with strong riffs, they have decided to (succesfully I might add) introduce several melodic aspects. This is most prominent on the track ”Asphalt and Suicide”, where a keyboard makes itself known and helps to add an extra dimension to the song. Not quite what I had expected, but quite a pleasant surprise nonetheless. On top of that, the band builds up momentum throughout the first nine first tracks of the album which they manage to keep continuously high; Which, all in all, makes for a very enjoyable album, one that is definitely worthy of the Thrash Metal moniker. The tenth (and last) track on the record, entitled ”Dusk” is a bit unique compared to the others; Primarily because they sort of ‘reset’ the aggression and momentum of the album and building it up anew, one layer at a time. This is done through a very simple guitar riff, that is slowly, but surely being drowning put by the rising volume and sheer power of the drums. All other instruments manage to support this introductory beginning, creating probably the best and most memorable intro that I have heard on a Thrash Metal album in a very long time. Sadly, however, I cannot prove it, nor even back up this bold statement, since the band have yet to release even one single from IV: Beyond the Reef of Sanity. However, according to their official website (see below), they should be releasing a music video, hopefully before long. I for one am looking forward to it.
