As the name suggests, the spaces between notes here are treated with as much gravity as the notes themselves – arpeggios spiralling upwards, conflicting yet interlocking in a dizzying overlap of time signatures. An obvious reference point is Javanese gamelan, with its ensemble of hand-beaten metallophones and bamboo flutes, pulling in all directions at once and yet, like a starling murmuration, maintaining shape as one, rippling whole. Eschewing electronic equipment, the title track sees marimbaphone, piano and vibraphone appearing to mimic a delay pedal, giving the effect of rain falling with odd regiment into a singing bowl. This melancholy but weirdly uplifting arrangement surfaces throughout the record, punctuated by mossy synth hums and subterranean rustling. Like much of Rayon’s work, “A Beat of Silence” beams across like a soundtrack for some forgotten documentary: dusty archive footage of cities being built and eroded in time-lapse seeming to flicker across the screen. Closing tracks “To the Quiet”, a tentative, almost impossibly fragile ballad, and “Kona”, a stretched and mangled wash of orchestral drone akin to Plinth or Edmund Finnis, leave the listener fully enveloped, as this incredibly sensitive work draws to a close. Downloadcode.Electro/ Ambient Intentions and Variations is composer Mikael Lind's most ambient work to date, absent of beats, filled with soundscapes and sound manipulation. Weightless music that may make you think of Christopher Bissonette, Deaf Center or Stephen Mathieu. Lind's tracks are based on simple themes – often performed by a piano or a viola – but his compositions gradually evolve into more complex creations and mature textures by letting electronically manipulated sounds interact. As in Lind's previous releases, these five sonic explorations are more comforting than agitating. But make no mistake: underneath their beautiful surface, threatening forces constantly loom, waiting to be unleashed: In 'Unyielding Rocks' the shimmering sounds are almost drowned in a wall of droning distortions. But those multi-layered elements never fully negate the solemn aspect of Lind's music, or, as he puts it: "Complexity is a wonderful thing, but should never be an end in itself." Leaves Of Grass" is a collaborative EP between Tarwater, alva noto and Iggy Pop. Each of the seven featured tracks scores a poem by American wordsmith Walt Whitman. Iggy Pop contributes spoken word recordings, while Tarwater and alva noto create the music. The EP lends its title from Whitman's main work 'Leaves Of Grass'. It channels forces from exceptional artists: Carsten Nicolai, aka alva noto, is a renowned artist and electronic producer. He is well-known for his diverse electronic work released through Mille Plateaux or his own label Raster-Noton. His first recordings had a huge impact on what was called 'Clicks & Cuts' in the late 90s. At the same time, Ronald Lippok and Bernd Jestram began their pioneering work: As Tarwater they pushed the last existing boundaries between electronic music, new wave and indie culture with their idiosyncratic music, which was hard to describe without using the prefix 'post-'. As you may have heard, the career of Iggy Pop started back in the 1960s. In 1967 he formed The Stooges and was later deemed 'Godfather Of Punk'. For this EP he lends his distinctive voice to seven poems by Walt Whitman, while Tarwater and alva noto create a vibrant and ever-pulsating score, sometimes calm, sometimes plodding and monolithic. Iggy Pop on Walt Whitman: "You know, I think he had something like Elvis. Like Elvis ahead of his time, one of the first manic American populists. You know you're looking at pictures of him, and he was obviously someone who was very much involved with his own physical appearance. His poetry is always about motion and rushing ahead, and crazy love and blood pushing through the body. He would have been the perfect gangster rapper. Whitman says, even the most beautiful face is not as beautiful as the body. And to say that in the middle of the 19th century is outrageous. It's a slap in the face. Seattle producer and songwriter Benoît Pioulard (aka Thomas Meluch) has been following his very own path through the calm scenery of ambient, shoegaze and electronica for over ten years now. Following the release of "Sonnet", his fifth LP for Portland’s Kranky label just a few months ago, Meluch returns to Morr Music with four shimmeringly beautiful Ambient tracks. Together with Rafael Anton Irisarri (aka The Sight Below) under the name ORCAS, he already contributed two albums filled with brilliantly introvert ambient pop to Morr’s catalogue. Now "Noyaux" sees Meluch building on his more loop-based productions, like the recently released "Stanza" LP. "Noyaux" is a touching blend of weightless drones and yearningly sluggish melodies. The title is French for "seeds" or "kernels", the basis of life and growth. Meluch recorded the EP from February through April of this year after looking through a huge collection of family photos that his mother had scanned from old photo albums. "I began remembering a lot of things and events that I hadn’t thought about in 20 years," he explains. After that he "was in a little daze for a few weeks." During this nostalgic reflection, he came up with four tracks, each representing a member of his family - father, mother, brother and himself. Meluch crafted them with the same basic rig of guitars, bass, loop pedal and a few effects he’s been using for years now. A couple of vocal elements are hidden deep in the mix, as well as old field recordings dating back to his childhood, like the cicadas on the title track or the last seconds of "Remind", which stem from an old tape recorded at his brother’s birthday back in 1985. All these tangible memories beautifully dissolve within the glowing reverb and lively static of the four softly intertwining tracks. It’s the sound of melancholy that resonates with everyone of us.
