Lo-Pan's fourth album, Colossus, is named for the Colossus of Rhodes - a 96-foot statue constructed in 280 BC to mark a failed siege and the indomitable nature of the city of Rhodes itself. No surprise it's the Columbus, Ohio, four-piece's most personal album yet and a testament to their growth and survival, as a band and as human beings. Three years on from their third record, Salvador, Lo-Pan have logged countless miles, crossing the country multiple times over on headlining tours and supporting the likes of Torche, High on Fire, KENmode, Whores, Fu Manchu and Weedeater. They've become one of the most ferocious live acts in American heavy rock, and Colossus stands tall to reap the rewards of their experience. For the first time in nearly a decade together, Lo-Pan knew exactly what they wanted when they hit the studio. They'd road-tested songs like "Eastern Seas" and "Colossus" for over a year, and partnering with producer/engineer Andrew Schneider at his Translator Audio studio in Brooklyn just days after headlining Small Stone showcases in that city and Boston this March, they belted out songs that show just how much they've moved beyond their influences and arrived at their own sound - a style built on aggression without caricature, fuzz without cliché, melody without redundancy and their meanest groove to date. Completed with a cover courtesy of Jason Alexander Byers (ex-Disengage, Black Black Black), Colossus will be supported by numerous tours including a full US stint this fall alongside fellow road dogs Black Cobra and much more to come. Like its namesake, Colossus was built in defiance of gods and men, and while Lo-Pan's loudest statement has always been made on stage, the material they craft and the power with which they execute it on this album is bound to stand for years to come. You can wade through as many press quotes about "Texas-sized" as you want or see how many top-whatever lists Wo Fat have made since the Dallas trio got started in 2003, but none of that is going to be the same as staring down their swampadelic fuzz groove for yourself. If you want to know the monster, shake its hand. In 2014, Wo Fat will release The Conjuring, their fifth full-length and second through Small Stone. Like their last two, 2012's The Black Code and 2011's Noche del Chupacabra, it's a heavy-riff/heavy-jam blast of a time - the kind of record that turns the vaguely interested into converts and that makes the corners on squares look even sharper. Guitarist/vocalist Kent Stump, bassist Tim Wilson and drummer/backing vocalist Michael Walter are jazz-combo tight and their roll is easy and natural, like you remember Fu Manchu being, but bigger-sounding and in the case of The Conjuriing, darker as well. There's been a creature lurking in the woods since Wo Fat's 2006 debut, The Gathering Dark - their second album, 2009's Psychedelonaut, pulled back on the threat some to lighten the mood - but whether it's the motor-driven rush of "Read the Omens" or the you're-already-lost-in-it riff-exploration of 17-minute closer "Dreamwalker," The Conjuring is indeed a backwoods ritual. Bluesmen have sold their souls for less. Veterans of Roadburn, slated for Freak Valley 2014 and self-sufficient with Stump handling the recording at his own Crystal Clear Sound in Dallas, Wo Fat push their jams farther than they've ever gone before on these five tracks. Topped off with a mastering job from Nolan Brett at Stump's studio and an otherworldly cover courtesy of Alexander Von Wieding, the beast that Wo Fat's tectonic riffage calls to earth has never seemed more real or more alive than it does on The Conjuring.

180g, colored vinyl - limited edition of 500 copies Almost by definition, musical side projects aren't meant to last very long, but rather serve as brief, often one-time departures for musicians otherwise engaged with far more pressing or successful bands -- and that's why Greenleaf has proved itself to be anything but your typical "side project." Yes, this Scandinavian music collective has gone through quite the revolving cast since their arrival on the scene, much like an auditory Y2K virus in that fateful millennium flip;
but the one constant bond that has repeatedly drawn them together, every few years, like an irresistible gravitational force, is a shared musical vision, straddling the realms of stoner and alternative rock. Such was the case when Greenleaf first assembled behind Lowrider vocalist Peter Bergstrand for that eponymous, year 2000 debut EP;
welcomed Dozer frontman Fredrik Nordin for is 2001 follow-up, Revolution Rock;
added Demon Cleaner guitarist Daniel Jansson for 2003's Secret Alphabets;
integrated Truckfighters singer Oskar Cedermalm in time for 2007's Agents of Ahriman;
and powered ahead behind reliable mainstay, guitarist Tommi Holappa, for 2012's Nest of Vipers. Now, Greenleaf is on the move again, bidding Cedermalm "adieu" and saying a hearty "hola" to a tandem of new recruits in frontman Arvid Jonsson and drummer Sebastian Olsson, who joined Holappa and long-serving bassist Bengt Bäcke in time to record (incidentally, with no outside help, guest musicians, or other additives) what would become Greenleaf's next and fifth long-player, Trails and Passes, which is now ready for global release in May of 2014, via Small Stone Recordings. And, as has always been the case with this ever-evolving sonic beast, the music magically draws out the best talents of whoever happens to be involved, resulting in a modern rock amalgam as impossible to simplify as it is futile to want to;
after all simultaneously familiar and surprising new sounds seem to be the ultimate thread connecting Greenleaf's long career. A career that now sees the group categorically divesting itself of any lingering "side project" associations (ask Holappa and he'll bluntly tell you it is Dozer that's become his "side project" these days) and graduating to well-deserved headline status - the better to take the Greenleaf name to the next level on the abundant strengths of Trails and Passes. Recommended if you like: Dozer, Brain Police, Sasquatch, Graveyard, Monster Magnet, Clutch, Roadsaw, Truckfighters, Lowrider, The Socks.

Some dudes just sound like they were born to do it, and listening to the classic heavy rock groove of The Socks, there can be no doubt it's what they're made for. They're naturals. The double-guitar French foursome formed in Lyon in 2009 and started surprising audiences almost immediately, eventually settling down to pump out their debut EP the following year. 2010's Side A was five songs well concentrated from a band still feeling out where they wanted to go. You had your Sabbath, your Zeppelin, and The Socks supported the release by playing with an array of national and international acts, busting out energetic, intense gigs while continuing to develop their style. The next two years drove the band to write darker songs, hit harder, become thicker, more powerful, more calculating and less frenetic. The resulting 2012 EP, Bedrock, soon caught Small Stone Records' eye, with strong instrumental performances from Jess (drums), Vincent (bass), Nico (guitar/keys/vocals) and Julien (vocals/guitar), the latter also serving as the frontman and delivering a guttural but memorable vocal performance throughout the tracks, psychedelic in some places and elsewhere delving into a neo-grunge moodiness that was a change from the first release. During Fall 2012, The Socks completed their first European tour, drawing on experience garnered from festivals and gigs alongside Karma to Burn, Red Fang, Truckfighters, Horisont, Mars Red Sky, Black Rainbows and many others with whom they share some elements while still maintaining a personality of their own. Simply put, they were a hit. Small Stone picked up the band and is set to issue their first full-length in 2014, as the band continue to thrust themselves into Europe's next generation of heavy rock and roll alongside acts like Abrahma, Deville, Asteroid, Isaak, Black Rainbows and Mother of God. Look for The Socks to continue their momentum into 2013 and beyond, in the studio and on the road, and expect nothing less than some of the finest riffs the continent has to offer. That's how it goes when you deal with naturals.

The title of Luder's 2009 debut, Sonoluminescence, referred to sound waves reacting on passing through a substance to create light -- sort of a long way around to expressing the illumination the four players felt came through their collaborating, but fitting. Progressive, psychedelic, stylistically intricate, the album was recorded and mixed by Eric Hoegemeyer at Rustbelt Studios and mastered by Chris Gooseman. Comprising 10 songs that effectively blended Luder's diverse influences, tracks flowed seamlessly from driving dark prog to languid shoegazing, bassist Sue Lott's vocals tying pieces together with the apparent effortlessness of a virtuoso. So it is four years later, on Luder's follow-up, Adelphophagia. Another research-worthy title - this one relating to the phenomenon of one embryo consuming another in utero - and another deeply varied collection of textural, smooth, frequently heavy rock and roll that has as much in common with Portishead as it does with Black Sabbath. Sue, Phil, Scott and Eric once again recorded with Hoegemeyer (who also contributes piano, backing vocals, percussion, etc.), and as well as boldly taking on David Bowie's 1997 single, "I'm Afraid of Americans," the album pushes Luder's creative breadth further;
new, dominant ideas and methods consuming others over a years-long writing period to become the expansive scope of "Dirge" or the grunge-y attitude-drenched kissoff "Never Liked You." Luder find room to balance their love of classic prog in "KrautJam" with an organic songwriting sensibility - the sweet melodies of its chorus are as memorable as they are exploding with color. Shows are sporadic, but Luder has shared the stage with Kyuss Lives!, Fu Manchu, Lo-Pan, Freedom Hawk, Lord Fowl, Suplecs, DixieWitch, House of Broken Promises, Gozu and many others.
