We realize every couple months that after close to thirty years we are still and always will be a band. Still playing the "live" shows, thinking of ridiculous song titles, and speaking our own language in front of other people who could never quite understand. amusing each other, which is more important than any of the rest of it. So, sticking to the process that had worked for us all along, and lifted us to the lofty heights which we had scaled, we convened half-heartedly in Kurt's basement with no plan or idea of what, if anything, we hoped to accomplish in the 12 hours we'd made available to each other. Most importantly, we just wanted to hang out, and by hang out, I mean being in the same room together except for the times when personal lives decreed some of us must vacate the premises. As with our last record, the impossible-to-overrate I THINK THIS IS, Kurt managed to record the damn thing and play lead guitar at the same time, without compromising his integrity or ability. We learned the songs on the spot, which we combined with finishing the actual writing of the compositions, played them a couple times, and moved on. No alcohol or drugs were involved with the making of this record. Really, we couldn't be bothered. We had stuff to do. And we did it Style: Power Pop

Haw River, NC - May 3, 2012 - Yep Roc Records is pleased to announce the June 26th, 2012 release of Sight & Sound, a two-disc audio and video collection from North Carolina based Chatham County Line. Sight & Sound includes 20 live tracks drawing from all five albums of the band's decade-long career. Nine songs appear on both the audio CD/LP and the DVD; four are exclusive to the DVD, while the CD/LP expands the collection with seven more tracks. The idea for Sight & Sound stemmed from the booking of a show shortly after the release of the band's fifth album, Wildwood, in the summer of 2010. Chatham County Line had arranged an August 10 date at the Raleigh, NC's Fletcher Opera Theater, "and we realized what a sit-down, comfortable, well-staged place it was to have a performance," Dave Wilson, the band's guitarist and primary vocalist, recalled. "We figured no matter what that we'd get some cameras in there to tape it." From there, Yep Roc took the ball and ran with it, setting the wheels in motion to have the show professionally filmed and recorded. "It was something the fans have always asked for. A lot of people think we sound better live and in-person than we do on record. They'll say, e wish your records sounded like you do live!' And there was a thought of this kind of being a loose 'Greatest Hits,' if you will, so it has songs from each record gathered all in one place," says Wilson. They go all the way back to the beginning - "Closing Town," the leadoff track on the very first Chatham County Line recording in 2003 - as well as revisiting three songs each from 2005's Route 23 and 2006's Speed of the Whippoorwill. There's a bit more focus on the band's two most recent albums, 2008's IV and 2010's Wildwood, perhaps a reflection of how much the band has come into its own in the past few years. The band is currently on their never-ending tour. The unexpectedly introspective album that instantly became a fan favorite ++ 1st Time On Vinyl ++ Includes Digital Download of 15 bonus tracks, 10 never before released ++ Gatefold 2xLP - 180 Gram Vinyl ++ Produced, arranged and mixed by Chris Von Sneidern and John Wesley Harding ++ John Wesley Harding's New Deal, originally released by Rhino in 1996, and here released for the first time on vinyl, was the songwriter's first album away from Sire, after the early 90's trilogy of Here Comes The Groom, The Name Above The Title and Why We Fight. Left to his own devices, on his own dime, determined (for the first time) to make precisely the record he wanted, Harding produced an unexpectedly introspective album that instantly became a fan favorite, and coincided with a sharp turn towards the acoustic in his career, inspired less by Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, and The Lovin' Spoonful, and more by the more baroque folk stylings of Cat Stevens, Duncan Browne and early Bee Gees. The title, which seemed to refer to the end of his association with Sire, also signaled a change of intent. The Sire records were partly successful because of their almost absurd stylistic variety, but on New Deal, Harding seemed for the first time to find his authentic musical voice on a record that worked precisely because of its cohesion of expression. The record was made at Chris von Sneidern's Ordophon-upon-Avon studio in San Francisco in almost ludicrously laid-back conditions, one or two days a week for many months. Parts weren't recorded until particular friends happened to pass through town. At the mastering session, the engineer asked what the almost inaudible squeak was on some of the tracks: "Well, probably the mattress," said the singer. "I did most of the vocals sitting on a bed." The focus here is the songs themselves, with their simple, rich, emotionally direct arrangements. It was the first time a John Wesley Harding production married form and content; each song seemed to have the perfect setting; no instrument was unnecessary. Drums were used on only two songs, and only at the end of one of those. It was as though Harding, with the shrewd guidance of von Sneidern, was learning how to make a record as he recorded this one. Though Harding didn't want to clutter the vinyl, or alter the presentation of the original record, with unnecessary associated material, this version comes with a digital download of 15 bonus tracks, including every extant acoustic demo of the songs on the album, numbering ten, all previously unreleased, recorded 6/7/94 for a tape called "The Sayonara Sessions". Also included are five bonus tracks from the Other People's Failure CD5, including two out-takes (Let Us Now and Death of The Ghostwriter), live versions of Kiss Me, Miss Liberty and The Secret Angel, and the classic, prophetic When The Beatles Hit America, in its finest incarnation, recorded live for KSCA, LA.
