The playful, sophisticated dance pop of Italian duo M+A's second album "These Days" is so seamlessly hooky and compelling that upon listening it's hard to imagine a world without it. It's a perfect distillation of a yearning for endless summer. M+A's 2011 debut "Things.Yes" was an inventive and spirited exploration of an organic, heartfelt variety of genre-hopping electro-acoustic pop that promised many good things to come from the young artists. But, perhaps nothing could've prepared us for These Days. M+A is Michele Ducci, 22, (vocals, instruments) and Alessandro Degli Angioli, 25, (instruments) of Forli, Italy. Much like their French neighbors to the northwest, M+A explore dance music as a medium for emotional expression much more than a conduit for cold, cut 'n' pasted samples and beats. M+A's euphoric electronic pop is clever, but not for cleverness' sake. Ducci's earnest and delicate vocals, which hearken to the warmth of Phoenix's Thomas Mars, pair the bittersweet edge found in the best classic pop songs with the buttoned-up retro dance grooves of Beck and Daft Punk's Random Access Memories. These Days is the result of meticulous collaboration begun in spring 2012, often from great distances with both members frequently on the go. "In this album we tried to experiment mainly with the song form, freeing ourselves of any bias towards any genre," the pair explain. "We haven't tried to remain faithful to anything." Rather than relying on samples, M+A played all of the instruments, apart from the impressive acoustic drumming of Marco Frattini. From the very first seconds of These Days, the album is off and running with lush hooks driven by the propulsive beats, pizzicato strings and syncopated electric piano of dancefloor-filler "When." The hooks never stop throughout the 11-song, 42-minute album. "B Song" evokes the blue-eyed retro-funk of late 90's era Beck. "Down The West Side" is a masterful slice of sun-drenched pop perfection sure to soundtrack many a summer BBQ or banish those rainy day blues, while songs like "New York There", "Game", "Practical Friday" and "Midnight Radio" easily pair up alongside recent 80s-reminiscent efforts by artists like Daft Punk, The Strokes and Phoenix. J.J. Cale, much like Nick Drake and Alex Chilton, is an artist whose genius and influence far outweigh his popularity. Here at Acoustic Sounds he's one of our favorites. And now through this exceptional Analogue Productions reissue, pressed on 200-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, you're going to hear Cale on his signature hits like "Cocaine" sound more vibrant and real than you've ever heard before! With his laid-back rootsy style, Cale is best known for writing "After Midnight" and "Cocaine", songs that Eric Clapton later made into hits. But Cale's influence wasn't only through songwriting — All Music Guide notes that his distinctly loping sense of rhythm and shuffling boogie became the blueprint for the adult-oriented roots rock of Clapton and Mark Knopfler, among others. Cale's refusal to vary the sound of his music over the course of his career caused some critics to label him as a one-trick pony, but he managed to build a dedicated cult following with his sporadically released recordings. "Troubadour", released in 1976, is notable for introducing "Cocaine", which Clapton covered on his "Slowhand"-album a year later. Producer Audie Ashworth introduced some different instruments, notably vibes and what sound like horns (although none are credited), for a slightly altered sound. As one reviewer says, Cale's druggy brand of rhythmic, spooky storytelling falls far outside of easy characterization. Cale's signature laid back, bluesy style of country rock features rambling snapshots of love and life on the road that are unconventionally addicting. When two talented, cussed men such as Harry Nilsson and Randy Newman get together to record an album, you can be sure of an exceptional record filled with great vocals and poetry. Nilsson, who is described as a man who performs his songs with one cynical, laughing eye and one nostalgic, tearful eye in Rowohlt’s Rock-Lexikon, finds inspiration in the then relatively unknown Newman, a docile but caustic social critic who often attacked American society in his songs. In the layers and harmonies achieved partly by overdubbing, and which alternate between cowshed, barbershop and the Beatles, Nilsson manages to make his bitter words somewhat easier to digest. He relates the bizarre chronicle of a couple who have a dull relationship and who morbidly look forward to passing away in an old people’s home ("Love Story"), or he swears his undying love to a certain Caroline in springtime, or he is transported back in time in his mind’s eye to an idyllic little town in the countryside ("Dayton, Ohio 1903"). A weighty musical background would lend nothing to these highly sophisticated songs. Piano chords, a little bit of electric harpsichord, and a tinkle on the organ keys here and there suffice to dally in an old-fashioned manner – with a sarcastic smile or even a nasty grin – in the desolation of reality, without getting the blues. The third encounter of the cool, swinging art of Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker took place in New York’s Carnegie Hall on a cold November day in 1974. So-called Cool Jazz had long since arrived and become popular on the East Coast with the result that the concert hall must have been filled to the last seat. The two hadn’t performed together on stage for ten years, rivalry and who knows what else had put an end to the highly successful pianoless quartet. In spite of the enormously high expectations – the Carnegie Hall fills all musicians with awe due to the echoes of concerts given by such classical and jazz great as Artur Rubinstein, George Gershwin and their successors over many generations – every melody is wonderfully relaxed from the very first note on. This is surely due to the excellent rhythm group (with piano!). This is made up of musicians from the 'new generation' – musicians who were sucking on dummies in their prams when the two veterans came together for the first time in 1952. Oldies such as "Bernie’s Tune", "My Funny Valentine" and "Line For Lyons", and new compositions like "Song For Strayhorn" and "Song For An Unfinished Woman" constitute a successful blend both for the two performers on stage and the audience alike. And there is no experimenting – no one wants to play or hear that – however the high level of communication is tangible everywhere. It makes sense to release the two individual LPs as a double album. Five years after Jinx [MOVLP626], seemingly an eternity, Defender was released. Although it took so long, the quality of this Blues-Rock offering is equal to his stellar '70s albums like Top Priority [MOVLP625] and Photo-Finish [MOVLP624]. Album opener "Kickback City" could be a song from hairy rockers Bad Company with heavy pounding guitars, but also "Failsafe Day" as well as "Road To Hell" are by-the-book-crunch-rockers. The blazing riff in "Continental Op," and the swampy, less abrasive "Ain't No Saint" complete this amazing but unfortunately less 'hyped' albums.
