Jimmy Edgar beckons your ears for a 4th album of electrosexual funk fired up with his signature flair. 'Majenta' is also his most mature, greasiest effort to date; composed with a learned understanding of original Electro, House and Techno functions borne of steamier Detroit 'floors, but with a debonaire's taste for slicker, modern European electronics. Teasing in with the 313 2-step of 'Too Shy', he cycles through 13 taut positions, from the simmering electro-house of 'This One's For The Children', to the crunk lean of 'Sex Drive' and the hyperfrisky hipwork of 'Indigo Mechanix (3D)', and taking a moment to compose himself on 'Attempt To Make It Last'. 'Let Yrself Be' is a slice of positivist mid '90s House revisionism, and 'I Need Your Control' makes smouldering Prince eyes, for the liquified, slowfast silicon bounce of 'In Deep' to beg for more in his most pleading vocoder tones. Derrick May and Jimmy Edgar have put together a compilation called We Love Detroit, due for release in December on We Love Recordings. May and Edgar represent two very different generations of Detroit electronic music. May became a key part of the movement's first wave in the '80s, helping to forge its steely sound both on his own and with Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson (the other two members of the so-called Belleville Three). Edgar didn't show up until nearly 20 years later, and when he did he broke with the tradition sounds of his predecessors, going instead for something more flamboyant and pop-influenced. We Love Detroit shows where both artists are at now. May combines techno classics from John Beltran and Carl Craig with newer cuts from the likes of KiNK and Petar Dundov, while also nodding to new school Detroit producers like Kai Alce and Andres. Edgar's half is more contemporary, highlighting artists like fellow Hotflush artist Lando Kal and 100% Silk's Magic Tour.
