After the two successful releases of 'Weight of Coronation' in 2010 and 'Grengus' two years later, one could say it's only logical to see both DOOMENTIA and HORN OF THE RHINO once again joining forces, but this time for a good old blast from the past. Originally released through 7th GATE RECORDS back in 2007, 'Breed the Chosen One' was the first of the two albums the Basque Country-based proud three-headed monster initially recorded as RHINO. Even if compared to their later works that debut will probably sound a tad more aggressive and thrash/hardcore-oriented, the amazing thing about it is the trio's unique blend of various styles of metal - from doom to sludge and grunge - was already firmly in places six years ago. Like DANZIG, HIGH ON FIRE and later ENTOMBED all wrapped up in one. Dark yet melodic and not afraid of pulling all stops one minute and speeding up the next, the band's main strength was already his frontman and vocalist Javier Gàlvez. Like a more possessed sounding Chris Cornell on his way down to hell, he's the one taking 'Breed the Chosen One' to the next level, proving that the Bilbao boys hadn't waited 'Weight of Coronation' to learn how to be and sound bloody great. Here, their quite unique mix of sludge, grunge and thrash takes here a whole new dimension. Javier Galvez soulful voice may still be their biggest asset but on 'Summoning Deliverance', they've proving that although they're still heavy-as-fuck, they've got any tricks up their sleeve. If sometimes they plough headstrong into the nearest wall, they also like to suggest in a very subtle yet menacing way that that even darker clouds are ahead. He may not want to spill the beans too much about this ten songs set recorded last March at Koba studio but nevertheless Javier describes this album as "conceptual" and an ode to misanthropy, with every tiny details - from the sublime yet apocalyptic artwork by Nick Keller to the lyrics - working around it. “not that many bands can cite as influences Bolt thrower, Autopsy, and Wino or Soundgarden. Then again, not that many bands sound like Bilbao’s Horn of the rhino…” ‘Grengus’, Horn of the rhino’s second album for the mighty Doomentia Records, is a powerful beast indeed. Ranging from full-on, raw throated attacks, as bloody as a bar fight and twice as vicious, to slower, thick-as-molasses sludge runs, there is variety and dynamic in spades making this one of the most potent albums you are liable to hear. Horn of the rhino are an excellent addition to the collection of any metal fan. This is undoubtedly one of 2012’s essential releases and for those of you with a taste for vinyl, it is worth noting that you’ll also get to hear the band’s reworking of Soundgarden’s evergreen ‘searching with my good eye closed’ – a fine incentive to buy the album in a proper format! Those Spaniards may have had to change their moniker due to copyrights problems (how rock n'roll is that?!) but make no mistake, this is exactly the same band that crushed both our souls and balls with two already heavier-than-thou albums, 2007's 'Breed the Chosen One' and the following year's 'Dead Throne Monarch'. But somehow, 'Weight of Coronation' is a tad of a different beast though. This being said, their music still weights more than a pack of bricks thrown from the 10th floor and as soon as opening track "Speaking in Tongues" will kick you in right in the nuts, you'll be in awe of their amazingly grainy and juicy six-strings sound, like some weird Yeti crawling out step by step from a lake of black tar. And if the title alone of the track "Crushed and Drugged to the Swamp" doesn't sound like a nasty plan, nothing will. But the (dark) beauty of 'Weight' doesn't lie only in its sense of gravity. Having thrown the rules out of the window, this power-trio greatest strength is their uncanny ability to make utter darkness and light meets. For every brutal pummeling riff they throw at you, they also can showcase the next minute mesmerizing melodies and beautiful (yeah you heard us) 70's rock feeling. Fuck, how many bands can pull off smashing your head through a wall ("Mass Burial Punishement") and then when you're down bleeding enchant you with some ALICE IN CHAINS-goes-sludge ("Sovereign") where some great Hammond organ is being poured on you like sweet honey on a hot chocolate cake freshly out of the oven?! None, unless you're called HORN OF THE RHINO. Recorded in Bilbao in March 2010, once again featuring the disturbing artwork of Rafa Garrés, which will even make your truest BM fan shit in their pants, and with five tracks out of eight breaking the eight minutes mark and a spanking deluxe vinyl version featuring an extra (and exclusive to this edition) cover of Black Sabbath's "Disturbing The Priest" for extra heaviness (like if we needed any!), 'Weight of Coronation' is one hell of a record that NEEDS to be checked out but hey, HORN OF THE RHINO are one hell of a band right?!
