Gaetano Donizetti is renowned as a leading composer of the Italian romantic bel canto opera style during the first half of the 19th century. But in his earlier years and as a student of Simon Mayr his dramatic genius came to the fore in his settings of psalm texts for Vespers, a form then still popular in Italy both in secular and liturgical contexts. Donizetti’s Vesper Psalms are characterised by beautifully shaped operatic melodies and colourful orchestration on a grand scale, creating moments of real rhetorical force – outstanding features of works that have lain undiscovered in manuscript form for two centuries.

American tenor Stephen Costello's meteoric career has taken him to the stages of the world's top opera houses. In this, his first recording for Delos, he performs a glittering assortment of arias that will appeal strongly to any opera lover, but that will be a particular treat for fans of the bel canto repertoire. While it mainly showcases classic arias by Gaetano Donizetti, we also hear single selections by Vicenzo Bellini and Giuseppe Verdi. Polished and sensitive orchestral collaboration comes courtesy of Maestro Constantine Orbelian and his vaunted Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra.

Another great coloratura artist, Montserrat Caballé, is heard in another prodigious Donizetti role, Gemma di Vergy, probably the most demanding he ever wrote for the soprano voice. It remained immensely popular in Italy during much of the 19th cen-tury. In Caballé’s 1976 live recording, never before released on CD, the “floated, ethereal tone for which she is renowned” was acclaimed by Gramophone, as was the conducting of the ever-resourceful Eve Queler, who with her Opera Orchestra of New York was responsible for reviving numerous undeservedly forgotten masterpieces.
