Mechanics Of Dominion by modern chamber ensemble Esmerine, co-founded by Rebecca Foon (Saltland, Silver Mt. Zion) and Bruce Cawdron (Godspeed You! Black Emperor). Mechanics Of Dominion is perhaps Esmerine's most dynamic and narratively-informed work, tracing an arc through Neo-Classical, Minimalist, Modern Contemporary, Folk, Baroque, Jazz and Rock idioms to invoke lamentation, meditation, resolve, resistance and hope. It is a requiem for our intractably suffering planet and a paean to the inscrutable, essential dignity of indigenous ethics and the natural world, and to modern human frailty and ingenuity. Stylistically, Mechanics Of Dominion brings mallet instruments to the fore, with marimba, glockenspiel, piano and amplified music box providing a prominent foundation and through-line on the album's diverse tracks. Multi-instrumentalist Brian Sanderson's contributions are also an ever greater part of Esmerine's songwriting - his stately melodic lines on horns and acoustic strings are formidable elements in the ceremonious lyricism and keening vitality of this song cycle. Mechanics Of Dominion is also another superlative iteration in Esmerine's dedication to artwork and packaging, this time featuring the work of Montréal artist Jean-Sebastien Denis to beautifully echo the album's compositional balance of abstraction, tension and emotional colourations.

Of his 12th studio album and its enigmatic title, Destroyer's Dan Bejar offers the following: Sometime last year, I discovered that the original name for "The Wild Ones" (one of the great English-language ballads of the last 100 years or so) was "Ken." I had an epiphany, I was physically struck by this information. In an attempt to hold on to this feeling, I decided to lift the original title of that song and use it for my own purposes. It's unclear to me what that purpose is, or what the connection is. I was not thinking about Suede when making this record. I was thinking about the last few years of the Thatcher era. Those were the years when music first really came at me like a sickness, I had it bad. Maybe "TheWild Ones" speaks to that feeling, probably why Suede made no sense in America. I think "ken" also means "to know." ken was produced by Josh Wells of Black Mountain, who has been the drummer in Destroyer since 2012. The album was recorded in its entirety in the jam space/studio space that the group calls The Balloon Factory. However, unlike Poison Season, ken was not recorded as a "band" record, though everyone in the band does make an appearance.

"Alien Sunset" is a collection of home-recorded "demos" from Max Clarke's time living in Chicago (Side A) and New York City (Side B). Each track has a sturdy, four-legged American quality, but also contains a gentleness and sense of stolen privacy. The arrangements are both dense and airy, decadent without sacrificing an ounce of effervescence. Something about this EP looks back over time's shoulder, but it isn't really "retro" music, it just glitters in a way you don't often hear these days. If this collection can be said to have any sort through-line, a whiff of motif, it revolves around the obvious delight Max takes in singing his heart out, despite variegated agony. The lyrical work moves from simple, diary-like musings, self-consciousness on the dance floor and general lust problems, to illuminated text. As a lyricist, Max draws upon the Romantics and Symbolists of the rock and roll poet tradition;
"Song of the Highest Tower" was written the day Lou Reed died and is an adaptation of a poem from Rimbaud. The project itself, Cut Worms, borrows its striking and ambiguous imagery from the William Blake poem, "Proverbs from Hell": The cut worm forgives the plow.

Limited edition of 250 copies. Simon and his friends have been releasing great music for a few decades now. I don't know what they get out of it, other than the odd fellow coming along now and then and saying, "Hey, I like those songs, can I press up a few hundred copies and sell them?," to which they'll agree and then write a bunch more songs and do it again. This time, I'm that guy and I can truly say that I haven't heard anything quite as enthrallingly classic as "Love Rat" all year long. And the b-side's ace, too!

Grooms' Exit Index combines the abandon of pop with the unease of American life in 2017, cloaking its hooks in a clamor of samples and distortion, its agitation expressed in its dream-poetry lyrics. The album as a whole is a study in contrasts-light meeting dark, amplifier fuzz surrounding big melodies, sampled friction squaring off with fluidly played basslines. Grooms laid down the skeleton tracks for Exit Index, the Brooklyn band's first album since 2015's Comb the Feelings Through Your Hair, at the storied New York recording studio The Magic Shop-the last band to record there before its closure in March 2016. The heavy distortion on the group's guitars helps add to the gloom as well;
Johnson, who has co-owned the Brooklyn pedal company Death By Audio Effects since 2008, made a limited-edition distortion pedal to celebrate the album's release. "There's a lot of tremolo on Exit Index," he says, "so I made a fucked-up-sounding trem." Collin Dupuis (Angel Olsen, Lana Del Rey) mixed the album, adding a few finishing touches to intros and song structures

The second Granite Shore album is a pop record, albeit an angry one. When writing began in spring 2016, it dealt largely with anxiety. "Suddenly," says Nick Halliwell, "we were overtaken by what felt like a national self-harming anxiety episode, which then went global." Enlisting cult singer John Howard's voice of a (recording) angel was another step outside the Indie Ghetto. The album employs a number of metaphors. "I considered picking up where the [2015 debut] Once More From The Top narrative left off, but resisted the temptation", Halliwell adds, "I wanted to focus on hooks, trimming off any fat..." The best pop is all about economy, hence unambiguous songs like Where does the Sadness come from?, Outside, looking in and Buyer beware sit alongside more expansive material like The Performance of a Lifetime, which conflates Brexit with the deaths of two Princes.

Andreas Bay Estrup dreamt of a career as a jazz drummer and studied in Copenhagen, Amsterdam and the USA. But things rarely happen as planned. First he started to write songs, then put together a band to play them. Dangers Of The Sea is a group of experienced musicians who have played or are still playing in bands such as Saybia (Jess Jensen), Slaraffenland (Mike Juel Taagehøj), Folkeklubben (Rasmus Jusjong) and Efterklang (Frederik Teige). Jusjong's parents were rehearsed in the basement of Rasmus Jusjong's parents. He took over the drums, while Estrup switched to guitar and vocals. In 2011 they played live for the first time, in 2013 the debut of the same name was released. With his harmonic songs and acoustic guitars, this was influenced by folk rock of the 60s and 70s. No wonder, as the band cites Neil Young as their most important influence. Estrup and his colleagues have been working on their second album for the last few years. "Our Place In History sounds like a reboot on many levels. Estrup continued to write the songs and lyrics, but each member of the band was involved in the arrangements and the sound. Dangers Of The Sea remain true to their roots, but have found their own way and have developed as a band.

It’s been almost exactly a year since Weaves released their acclaimed self-titled debut LP, lauded internationally for its exuberant approach to guitar pop and recently nominated for this year’s Polaris Prize. It was a whirlwind year for the band who spent a nearly uninterrupted 12 months on the road, playing festivals across the globe, and touring with their fellow 2016 breakout artists Sunflower Bean and Mitski. Propelled forward by their own momentum, which they corralled like the barely contained energy of their explosive live sets, it was a life changing-experience, and upon returning home to Toronto the band’s leaders, singer Jasmyn Burke and guitarist Morgan Waters, found themselves possessed by an irrepressible burst of creative energy.
