A concept of “conceptlessness” was created at that time from a spontaneous idea (many thought it was an April Fool’s joke when the Einstürzende Neubauten first stood on the stage at Berlin’s “Moon” on April 1, 1980;
more than 35 years ago), from which the “brilliant dilettantes” developed their own strategy against social and musical architecture using metal pipes, feathers and machines. In keeping, Blixa Bargeld constructed metaphor-laden poetry, around which unique worlds of sound were built up from objects of the most varied origins. The band discovered sounds beyond the pain barrier, the beauty of dissonance and the aesthetics of the scrapyard. They are regarded as the most important engines in the development of new musical strategies. Hardly another German band has characterized the music landscape as lastingly as Einstürzende Neubauten. When Aswad played the Rockpalast recording at the Studio-B of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk nobody expected them to become pop stars in the future, yet. In 1980 they still were part of the London "Punky Reggae Party". The Rockpalast concert shows the band at an early stage: influenced by punk, raw and untamed, years before they rose to be one of the most important reggae bands from Great Britain next to Steel Pulse. They saw themselves as pan-African "Rebel Souls" and began their set with a programmatic song, which never appeared on any album: "Only Jah children play reggae music this way!" Driven by the drummer's wild drum patterns and underlined with the filigree organ figures by Clifton 'Bigga' Morrison the concert develops a increasing dubby energy, which leads to the many-voiced complaint: "They want to execute political systems on I and I" with an anarchic echo inferno.

Downloadcode / Gatefold. On two 12”s and over the course of a staggering 78 minutes, big things are happening on »Jams«, Urban Homes’ monumental sophomore album. The highly ambititous attempt at a certain history of dance music, a sweaty night on the dance floor, an excursion into the fog…But one thing at a time: The 13 Jams go back to recordings of years of communal, MIDI- and hardware-based jam sessions which, over three years, were painstakingly discarded, refined, condensed, reconstructed and provided with occasional guest vocals by Hanitra Wagner (Ωracles, Die Heiterkeit). The album was mixed by Jan-Philipp Janzen (Von Spar) at Dumbo Studios, mastered by Cem Oral at Jammin’ Masters. Sonja Deffner (Die Heiterkeit, Jason & Theodor) is responsible for the stunning gatefold artwork. On »Jams«, Benjamin Riedl, Stephan Weinand and Oliver Bersin explore a history of dance music that is retraced in the 13 tracks: The seemingly clear cut references in titles such as »Verdub Lang Her (Stripped Down Killer Dub Jam)«, »Blue Note Jam« or »As High Acid Can Get (☺ Jam)«, however, are not to be taken as letters of intent, but—despite the playful handling of genre conventions and clichés—as hommages to the immaterial architecture of the club: the atmosphere, the vibe, the jam. In its rich texture, the dramatic composition of »Jams« reconstructs the resonance space of an excessive, foggy, and steamy night at the club, thereby approaching its point of interest. Despite the clear club compatibility (each of the 13 tracks will work on a dance floor worth its salt), Urban Homes do not shy away from sticky harmonic arrangements and melodies that are bound to be called »pop«. They do however, and this is one of the points of this great album, avoid any overarching narrative of organicity or authenticity which might refer the record to a context of »indie« music. Unlike the acclaimed and award-winning debut »Centres«, which wore the socialization of the (previously four) Urban Homes on its sleeve, this is rootless, nomadic music that is in the most beautiful sense »out there«. So far out there, in fact, that we seem to make out figures such as Pharaoh Sanders or Sun Ra through the ever-present (see titles such as »4/20 Jam« or »Summer Rolls (Midnight Munchies Jam)« for reference) fog. What seems so effortless, casual and relaxed over the entire run time, finally, is in fact merely evidence of the band’s musical mastery and precision: The staging of gaps, the fraying, dripping track ends and its general weirdness is part of the modeling of the history of a music that formed without a »quantise« command.

This live album, The Bonnie Bells Of Oxford, captures the highlights of one of those special shows on vinyl and CD. The transatlantic recording of The Marble Downs is now distilled to a room on one night in Oxford town, and the force of the songs and performance concentrated similarly. It stands as a more genuinely collaborative record than its predecessor, with songs drawn from the oeuvres of both artists and reworked with a joyous spontaneity. Tensions are dissolved in this heady brew, between warring lovers, goat and ram, dark and light, heaven & hell, country and folk, this world and the next, a rhapsodic dialectic embodied by the ouborous vocals of Bonnie Billy & Lavinia Blackwall. It's a giddy whirling carnival ride over all too soon, which is the supreme advantage of having this on vinyl, when dizzy and reeling and eager for more, just wheel it up and go again. No live album can substitute for the precious fleetingness of music heard live but the best of them can offer something else, a document, recorded proof almost that something special was created on that stage on that night by those musicians in front of that audience. More importantly, a chance to create and hear something special yourself every time you spin this record

Russ Wilkins (Bass) When punk rock group the Pop Rivets broke up in 1980, Billy Childish joined forces with Mickey Hampshire, a Pop Rivets roadie who had been performing in a group called Mickey and the Milkshakes with his cohort Banana Bertie. The two began writing songs together and the group released their first LP, Talking 'bout Milkshakes! in 1981. With Childish and Hampshire sharing guitar and vocal duties, Bruce Brand on drums, and Bertie on bass (later replaced by Russ Wilkins then John Agnew), the Milkshakes' sound was a primitive blend of British beat groups, like the early Kinks at their toughest, and hard-rocking American guitar instrumentalists like Link Wray. This sound came to be known as the "Medway sound" and the core members have been playing a variation on it throughout their whole careers. The Milkshakes were a very prolific group, recording nine records in their four years together, and the band was very much a blend of Childish's primitive songwriting and Hampshire's more melodic leanings. The group also masterminded and backed a Medway girl group, the Delmonas. When Mickey left The Milkshakes in 1984 Childish, Brand and Agnew went on to form Thee Mighty Caesars. Mickey and Bruce now play in The Masonics along with Ludella Black from The Del Monas, and Russ lives in Scotland and fronts the Wildebeests as well as being Lord Rochester.

Start to finish, FLOTUS is imbued with that magic energy that comes when an artist stumbles upon the thrill of the new-something that makes them crazy enough to want to start the whole process over again. The album is bookended by two long-form pieces: the first, "In Care of 8675309," is most reminiscent of where Lambchop has been, while the second, the sprawling, hypnotic "The Hustle," suggests where they might still be headed. The latter seamlessly shifts between movements, a foundation suggestive of krautrock and early electronic music, gorgeously ornamented with perfectly placed piano and horns. Drawing upon a diverse palate of influences and transcending each one, it's a stunning piece of work-certainly one of the most impressive achievements of Lambchop's catalogue.

Their reconfiguration from a trio to a two-piece sees them blossoming from the previously cold, kosmische palette found on their debut Measures of Joy into the wider-reaching sound of Forward Constant Motion. " More than anything, we wanted this record to expand in every direction: the poppy parts are poppier, the weird parts are weirder, hopefully". Grapefruit emerges from a cacophony of crackles and hums and drifts in and out of focus, even while clocking in at a lean sub-four minutes. Elsewhere, Miserable World is far more rigid;
with Richards' vocals tied to its jutting, jerking movements. Standout-track, Hammer A Nail abruptly taking off from powerful stomp to high-def escapism. Underpinning much of the record, though, is a sense of the dreamlike or otherworld, the album split up by short, drifting passages where structures melt away. It's a key thematic point which, in-part, arose when Pillay developed Labyrinthitis (a disorder of the inner ear which results in vertigo and disorientation). "The symptoms would often come in spells, so I liked the idea of loosely replicating that feeling with the music. That's why some of the songs stop abruptly or sound as if they are falling apart. I wanted to reflect the fallibility of the human body." As for Richards, the themes of Measures of Joy - the claustrophobia of being stuck in one place figuratively and literally - remain in the background, however Forward Constant Motion offers a mirror in the approaching idea in the freedom and fear of being displaced. On songs like Lily of Youth or Miserable World, such movement is pointed and direct. Elsewhere, as on the wistful murmur of Move On (the group's warped interpretation of late night Lovers Rock tunes) or Sonia and Claudette's early AM stupor it's more uncertain. Then there are tracks, like the glimmering finale Future Body, that focus on the strength of women and female friendship. As Richards explains, the group are acutely aware of misguided perceptions when operating within the paradigm of a male-female electronic duo. It's a record made out of a union that is vital for the on-going evolution of the group. Reduced to their very nucleus, they now sound at their most natural, comfortably processing the boundless ideas that they previously eschewed and shaping them to work, pushing the pair ever further forward.
