The impressive crux of Pagan Science, the sophomore album by Austin trio The Well, is that It's a multiplicity of itself. From the band's dual male/female vocals to their transcendently timeless sounds and erudite lyrical themes, Pagan Science is crystalline in its complexity and clarity at the same time. The Well walk an intriguing line between authentic early 70s doom/heavy psych and the more frayed-edge-of-sanity weirdness of their hometown's legendary noise rock scene, whilst also splicing in shades of chamber choir vocals, occult rock and dark folk. Sonically, Pagan Science picks up where The Well - bassist/vocalist Lisa Alley, guitarist/ vocalist Ian Graham and drummer Jason Sullivan - left off with their widely heralded 2014 RidingEasy debut Samsara. Here, the band's heavy psych, proto-metal sound growing evermore vast, yet more focused on hooks, and their lyrics more conceptually intricate. Part of a running thread throughout the album's introspective lyrics is the notion that the world outside of one's own mind is also a creation and reflection of the interior world of that mind. And, just like the band's sound is one thing (undeniably heavy) and simultaneously another (dark folk, blues... there's even a Crosby, Stills & Nash cover, Guinnevere), it's this multiplicity that makes Pagan Science such a captivating record. A Hand Through the Cellar Door is, in many ways, Temple's most straightforward collection of song-storying tunes to date. There are tales of dysfunctional, broken homes and of dysfunctional, broken people. Birds of Late December, with its fluttering, nimble fingerpicking, paints an exacting but impressionistic portrait of divorce through the eyes of an exceptionally wistful child. In both Maryanne Was Quiet and The Case of Louis Warren we follow two characters whose lives unravel in very different ways, though their central question is the same: After you shed all the things you think make you who you are, what is left? Mndsgn (born Ringgo Ancheta) grew up in south New Jersey, raised with Gospel music at church, and B-Boy culture at home. Experimenting with beat-making, he befriended fellow producer Knxwledge and the two formed the influential Klipmode collective (along with Devonwho and Suzi Analogue). Mndsgn's music flourished when he moved to Los Angeles, catching the attention of Stones Throw who released Yawn Zen (2014), an LP of introspective and mostly instrumental beat creations, punctuated by vocal cuts. Body Wash is his second album for Stones Throw, a full set of realized songs that were only hinted at on Yawn Zen. Influences here include the likes of early SOLAR records material, Leon Sylvers III, Kashif, and Dave Grusin. These artists, Mndsgn says, embodied that potent feeling in the early 80s boogie/funk/soul/jazz/fusion wave. He adds, I was also digging back into some early 90s R&B sounds and started really imagining what it would be like if I had mashed the two eras together. He explains Body Wash as a soul record that plays with nostalgic elements in a very dynamic & positive way. Think about it as a box of crayons for you to draw emotions with. The album was built around a backstory, a loose narrative thread through which he could filter his unformed ideas. In the narrative, a homeless man encounters a mysterious woman who gives him shelter. She instructs him to bathe with a very peculiar body wash. As he soaks and sinks deeper in a thick lather of this unknown solution, the man finds himself transported to an alternate dimension. Mndsgn describes the story as a vessel that would allow me to speak on topics that were universally relatable … The story actually became a true outlet for me to address worldly issues with Self. The resulting album also represents a dynamic step forward in songwriting. Without explicitly relating its plot or characters, the album as a whole turns on the story's key theme, the psychedelic, transformative power of love. Record Label: Stones Throw Style: Electronic

Released on the band's own label, We Are The Men Records, Devil Music is a one time pressing limited to 2000 copies. The Men are Rich Samis, Kevin Faulkner, Nick Chiericozzi and Mark Perro. We created Devil Music in our practice space over a weekend in January. We wanted to give ourselves something enjoyable to listen to with this record... Something that had our personality in it, not just another record to get reviewed, to get into festivals, to get on tv, to participate in some sort of endless, winless game. This isn't a campaign. Jordan Lovelace (mem. of Pampers) engineered and recorded Devil Music. Jonathan Schenke (mem. of Eaters and engineer of 100's of records) mastered the sessions on a Neve console in New York. These fine gentlemen knew we were after a raw four track sound. They used our strokes on the tape to get us where we wanted to go. Every record sounds a bit different than you think it will. Some newer things came along for the ride like cassette cut ups, damaged vocal cords from years of yelling, a saxophone and of course the ten new songs. Some old ideas are still in the mix: the tracks were all done live, including the vocals, the packaging/artwork was designed and produced by us. Hope Sandoval (of Mazzy Star) and Colm Ó Cíosóig (of My Bloody Valentine) have announced a new album from their project Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions. The new record, which is the duos first since 2009s Through the Devil Softly, is called Until the Hunter, and its out November 4 via Sandovals own label Tendril Tales. Along with the announcement, theyve shared a new song from the record, Let Me Get There, which is a duet with Kurt Vile. In a press release, Kurt Vile said of the collaboration: top notch musos. E, the trio of Thalia Zedek (Come, Uzi, Live Skull), Jason Sanford (Neptune), and Gavin McCarthy (Karate), have crafted an album that fuses an explosive, industrial sound with the patience and reservation only practiced songwriters can invoke. While each member has decades of experience in the alternative scenes of rock music, their collaborative efforts have combined in a work that is both unlike anything thats come before them, and the result of three veterans working in total harmony. What sets E apart from their contemporaries is their almost youthful willingness to experiment, while having the maturity to show restraint and austerity. On their self- titled debut album, E have developed a sound that is both mechanically oriented and emotional, a combination they could only describe as soul music for machines. Zedek and Sanford first began working together in 2013 out of a desire to dive into a musical outlet more collaborative than their more solo-oriented efforts. Drawn by mutual respect for one anothers artistry, the two were energized creatively when exploring the combination of Zedeks unmistakable voice and inventive guitar lines with Sanfords sculptural homemade metal guitar sounds and stomp box rhythms. Zedek and Sanford approached longtime friend Gavin McCarthy about expanding on the unique sounds. Although McCarthy, a fan of E, originally thought of himself in the band on bass, once he was added as the drummer it became immediately clear that his expressive and agile playing was all the rhythm section E needed. E defies expectations - while having no bassist, the sound is driving and with an emphasis on rhythm. Delicate Fingers is a great example of their inventive approach. The propulsive tom-heavy drumming of McCarthy in tandem with Sanfords specially crafted bass-tone stomp boxes provides a relentless drive. Each member sings on the album, bringing their own lyrics and melodies to the table, and sometimes crossing and interweaving with anothers vocals. Where most bands with more than one singer might gravitate towards harmonies, E instead showcases each players voice as an individual, with McCarthy even providing some of the albums fiercest vocal performance on the explosive Candidate. Several songs find the band trading lyrical and vocal duties, such as I Want to Feel Good, where Sanfords mantra I want to feel good trades off with Zedeks impassioned lyrics about immigration. The name E itself is representative of the band – a trio of lines, each equal in length, each sticking out equally from a base. Because each player is so distinguished and distinct in their playing styles, E is able to exhibit total control over their sound, while still focusing on having the freedom to experiment. Whether its stomping on a wooden block housing the blade from a hacksaw for bass tones, or approaching the drum kit as a melodic instrument, the band said themselves, its about freedom. Chasms is the San Francisco based project of Jess Labrador and Shannon Madden. The duo crafts percussive dirges that are at once beautiful and menacing. Labrador's haunting vocals and hypnotizing guitar work wade between rhythmic bass lines and bursts of Madden's stinging feedback, laid on a bed of pummeling drum programming. The band's affinity for industrial rhythms, swelling textures, precise minimalism, and chaotic eruptions of noise sounds as equally informed by shoegaze as drone and doom metal - to choose just one would be a disservice. On the Legs of Love Purified is the band's proper debut full-length album. Written over the course of several years, the album explores the healing force of love and the exorcism of pain that inescapably accompanies it. It is the 15th full length release from the Brian Jonestown Massacre recorded from early 2016. Featuring Ricky Maymi, Dan Allaire, Joel Gion, Collin Hegna & Ryan Van Kriedt from the band. Also Emil Nikolaisen from the Norwegian band Serena-Maneesh joins BJM on this album, plus vocal performance Tess Parks and Katy Lane. Anton Newcombe has been a very busy man these past two years, kicking off with the critically acclaimed Brian Jonestown Massacre album 'Revelation' in May 2014. After a successful UK and European tour, the BJM followed this up with the '+-'EP (Nov 2014). 2015 saw the release of 'Musique de film imaginé' (April); an imaginary film soundtrack album featuring the track 'Bonbon' which has, ironically, been used in 'Dheepan'; the Palme D'or winner at Cannes film festival 2015. In June, Anton and Tess Parks embarked on a well received tour of the UK and Europe to support the release of 'I Declare Nothing'. Anton finished the year with a BJM mini-album release entitled 'Mini-Album Thingy Wingy'. The band have been touring the world since November 2015, playing Australia, New Zealand, and then in 2016 USA , Canada & Europe. God's Balls, TAD's punishing, noise-drenched debut album, was recorded with Jack Endino at Reciprocal Recording in Seattle in 1988, and released early the following year. In addition to their usual arsenal of guitars, bass, and drums, the band employed a variety of unusual instruments - an empty gas tank from a car, a hacksaw, a large brass tube from a microwave transmitter, CB radio mics, a cello bow used on cymbals to emulate guitar feedback - to thunderous effect, adding a Neubauten-esque clang to the band's rock riffs. After releasing God's Balls, TAD flew to Europe with Nirvana for both bands' first European tour. The now-legendary, month-long tour took the bands to the UK, Ireland, Scotland, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Italy, Denmark and Sweden. This reissue of God's Balls features CD bonus tracks from TAD's 1988 debut 7", plus the previously unreleased "Tuna Car" from the 7" session. The sounds of Salt Lick are, indeed, wonderfully ugly, thanks in part to the involvement of noise-rock technician Steve Albini (Big Black, Shellac, Nirvana, The Jesus Lizard), who recorded the EP. The band continued to release singles and gain momentum in the press. As TAD himself puts it: "Lyrically we had a lot of subject matter that was meant to be tongue in cheek from the beginning but had been presented by Sub Pop and ourselves as true-to-life. As a result, the press had taken it all seriously and began to feed on and ravenously devour the mythology that we had created." This reissue of Salt Lick includes tracks from the "Wood Goblins" single, a split 7" with Pussy Galore, and the "Loser" 7".
