Jookabox, the name of Indianapolis native David ""Moose"" Adamson's musical project, sounds like a child slurring the words ""Grandpa Jukebox,"" implying filial connection with an archaic musical object. Either that or the intoxicated pronunciation of a strange blues artist's nom de plume. When David was in grade school, his uncle took note of his developing interest in hip-hop and loaned him a four-track. They mixed tracks together and the young Adamson would write rhymes to sing over them, including a double-boombox sequel to Fu-Schnicken's ""What's Up Doc (Can We Rock?)"" called ""Sufferin' Succotash (I Got Whiplash)"" At first the beats came from instrumental sides of cassette singles, then from presets on his uncle's drum machine, and finally from his very own beat machine (a Christmas gift), the Yamaha DD-9. But that was a long time ago. Since then, through various incarnations and collaborations with groups such as Archer Avenue and BIGBIGcar, Adamson's musical interests and excursions have crystallized into a startlingly singular and eclectic songwriting strategy. Jookabox's debut record, Scientific Cricket, samples a kind of primordial blues sound, children's sidewalk-chalk rhymes and Appalachian folk. But his latest effort finds him moving into new, unplumbed territories. Ropechain pinwheels kaleidoscopically through old-time spirituals, punk, chain-gang hymnal, deep house, and club music hip-hop, blending these disparate elements into a cohesive and unique synthesis. Signed to Kent based Engineer records, this band are hopefully starting their journey into a rewarding professional music career. Not to be confused with American band “The After Party” (yeah I know!). They sit somewhere between indie-pop and rock, with a sound that draws influences from American indie bands and Brit rock. Back in my 80’s music journalism days, I interviewed a band called “It bites” who’d just had a massive hit with “Calling all the heroes” and a superb album called “The big lad in the windmill”. There are strong similarities here – mainly due to the guitar and vocal production (although the Afterparty have a slightly harder sound), but it really took me back (sighs nostalgically) and as a result I enjoyed the journey that these four tracks took me on. This is an excellent collection of tracks from a band that with the right management, could do very nicely for themselves. I wonder if the overall sound is unique enough to single the band out from the crowd, but the fan base for this genre is huge, so that needn’t necessarily restrict their success. A man of indeterminate age stands behind a stack of drums and keyboards, all arrayed within his reach. A guitar hangs down from his neck, occasionally played his hands aren’t split between the keys, tapping out riffs on synth. His feet work a couple of pedals beating out time on snare and floor tom. A drumstick is deployed on the guitar and the keys only. Makes sense. Like a schizoid game of ‘Pong’, the whole thing is about exploiting the tempo, and the sounds - these ano / digital shards, iced with minimal / savant lyric shreds and a crazed slavery to the groove(s), could be hailing from Munich in ’77 or Cleveland, SF, LA, NYC or London in the late 70s. It could be the soundtrack to Peter Ivers’s ‘New Wave Theatre’ or some weird dark corners of the early 80s once the records began to make their way into the world. These tracks are the sound of Trin Tran. ‘Dark Radar” was recorded in 2002 and 2003, made up into a couple of different CD-Rs and then burned and given away. Finding Trin Tran himself and getting all these tracks gathered together took a little bit of time.
