Band members and friends Nick DiSalvo, Jack Donovan and Matt Coutoalready dismissed any last remains of stoner metal stereotypes on Lore (2015). Their current album, which was written following the long and acclaimed Lore tour in moments of intense creativity, is a journey into prog rock and psychedelic worlds. Six monumental songs, huge in sound, each of them their own cosmic expedition. What begins as driving mid-tempo rock filled with heavy guitar riffs repeatedly erupts into melodic tangents and clever variations. The high demands that DiSalvo places on his own songwriting seem to become more unfettered from minute to minute – as does the pleasure of listening to him. Guest musicians Michael Samos and Mike Risberg have added additional guitars, pedal steel and keyboards to the trio, making Elder’s sound more voluminous than ever, and the influences found here range from 70s prog dinosaurs such as Yes, King Crimson or Pink Floyd to their kindred spirits Motorpsycho or legendary 90’s band, the God Machine. And it is of course a cliché, but Elder bring their own organism to life from all these influences. Elder already strike out on their chosen path on the album opener “Sanctuary”. What begins as a trademark stoner song turns on its own axis several times at minute four, morphing into lyrical polyphonic pickings and using a Mellotron to sweet-talk its way to an unfathomable and brutal finale. “The Falling Veil” moves between Thin Lizzy with palpitations and Motorpsycho (era “Heavy Metal Fruit”). Those who think of Kyuss during “Staving off Truth” won’t be able to hold that thought the entire 11 minutes of the song. And as hymn-like as the riffs can be, the band never settles down to one part for longer than two minutes. But at the same time, the songs never lose their coherence, because all parts are logically woven into one another. And it could be that “Sonntag”, a detour into the Krautrock motor functions of Neu!, most clearly shows the limitless cosmic ambitions of Elder. This album is of epic proportions and fans of the likes of Russian Circles, Ocean Size, 65 Days of Static, Kyuss, the aforementioned Motorpsycho and The God Machine will find much to love here.

Sehr Kosmisch Ganz Progisch” by Weserbergland is an homage to the seventies krautrock scene seen through the eyes of Ketil Vestrum Einarsen. Ketil is a veteran flutist of the Norwegian Progrock scene, having been a part of White Willow for almost 20 years. He has also been a member of Jaga Jazzist and played on more than fifty albums, with bands like Motorpsycho and Geir Lysnes Listening Ensemble. As a composer, he has written music for 10 documentaries and one TV series (all of this together with Lars Fredrik Frøislie( Wobbler, White Willow etc) “Sehr Kosmisch Ganz Progisch” is Ketil's debut as a band leader. He has been a kraut rock enthusiast since he discovered the music through the record collection of his friend´s hippie father in the early 90s, so to take this musical turn was a very natural thing him. And it´s quite easy to hear the inspiration of bands like Tangerine Dream, Can, Cluster, Harmonia et cetera. But it´s not a retro sounding album, the sound is also influenced by Ketils former band, Jaga Jazzist and similar bands, and of course there´s a huge doses of 70s era progressive rock in there. The result is a very unique and demanding album. The simplicity of krautrock is juxtaposed or mixed with a complete sensory overload of multitracking, heavy use of effects and compositional techniques from contemporary or classical music.

With "Towards Language" trumpeter Arve Henriksen is back with his trusted long time musical partners Jan Bang and Erik Honoré. Arve first collaborated with the pair on the much loved and highly praised "Chiaroscuro" (2004), Arve's second album, and later on "Cartography" (ECM 2008) and "Places Of Worship" (2013). Also an important part of the line-up is Eivind Aarset, the ECM associated guitarist extraordinaire. "Towards Language" is Arve's ninth album (eight on Rune Grammofon and one on ECM) under his own name, in addition he has collaborated on records with artists like David Sylvian, Jon Balke, Christian Wallumrod, Trygve Seim and Trio Mediaeval, as well as a dozen albums as founder member of free noise trio Supersilent. Arve has never been short of praise when it comes to expressing the importance his collaborators and musicians have on the creative process. Asked to comment on his new album, and its title, here's what he has to say: "To express something on your own can be quite challenging at times. I have for years been in creative collaborations with musicians and producers that have ecouraged and inspired me. With this help and inspiration to discover new sounds and music I have struggled and made my way to gradually be able to create some sort of language and a way of telling stories with my trumpet and singing. They have all coloured and gradually transformed me through different artistic timezones that I have passed through. All the information, concerts, discussions and impressions have had a significant impact on the process of gradually coming closer towards the core of communication through music. With this recording, the good help and inspirational artistic contributions from Eivind Aarset and Jan Bang at the recording session in Oslo has led to these selected tracks. Music that has a connection to "Places of Worship", but this time recorded "live" in the studio in a chamber music like approach inspired by contemporary elements from composers like Toru Takemitsu and Manuel de Falla, to traditional organ music, and at the end of the album bringing in a traditional "kven" (ancient Nordic song tradition) theme from the roots of my family from the North of Norway, sung by Anna Maria Friman of Trio Mediaeval.

Everyone is angry nowadays. The internet is awash with anger and people on the streets are angry. LIFE are no exception, they are the untapped anger of the British working class in 2017. Their last offering, Euromillions, was a piece-de-resistance, provocatively released on the day of Donald Trump's inauguration - taking aim and swiping hard at the so called 'Alt right'. "You have the right to bear arms if you've got the right coloured arms" bellowed lead singer Mez Sanders-Green over a cacophony of noise. LIFE are based in Hull, a classic underdog city made good by its new found status as 2017 UK City of Culture. But beneath the cultural progression and media attention there is still fear in the air. It's this fear that runs through the heart of the band's debut album, as explained by Mez: "Popular Music sounds like panic and anxiety, it's the sound of shitting it about whatever happens next week, about what you can weigh through on the self-checkout to get your beans cheaper. It's an LP made up of the psyche of everyone who can see they're getting fucked and there's a lot of people getting fucked right now." The album was produced and mixed by Grammy award winner, Ian Dowling at The Fish Factory in London. It's a blistering, thunderous album that barely leaves room for breath. A quintessentially punk record in the spirit of Sham 69, new single In Your Hands (the LP opener) is indicative of the flavour to come. Anger, restlessness, tension. Upon attending college at the prestigious California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), her sphere of in uence exponentially expanded to include the sounds of Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, and California punk rock and rollers Social Distortion. During an intimate co eehouse performance, Jackson’s melancholic country-folk caught the attention of Social Distortion front man Mike Ness’s wife and son, eventually leading the punk-rock legend to reach out to the young songwriter. Ness produced Jackson’s debut record, Gilded, and also invited her to open for Social D. on their upcoming spring tour throughout March and early April. “He gave me homework,” she points out. “He made me listen to Lucinda Williams’s Car Wheels On A Gravel Road and told me to listen only to that album for the next three or so months. That was the template of the album he wanted to create with me, so I picked from songs of mine that had a similar feel. If I didn’t have him, Gilded would have been a lot more scattered.” That’s the key, right there. Gilded is a closed circuit, a masterwork of emotional honesty, of epic tales and intimate confessions. This is just the rest you’ve heard from Jade Jackson. So much more lies ahead, for her and for us.
