MENTALIST is a Melodic Metal band from Saarbrücken, Germany that was founded in 2018. The group consists of Peter Moog (guitars), Thomen Stauch (drums, ex BLIND GUARDIAN), Kai Stringer (guitars, STARCHILD), Florian Hertel (bass) and Youtube star Rob Lundgren on vocals. Mentalist's music is comprised of Melodic Metal/ Power Metal with a slightly progressive touch. The music is defined through a multitude of guitar melodies and vocal hooklines. Its major influences come from renowned bands like Iron Maiden, Helloween and Blind Guardian (through Thomen Stauch's drums). Daniel Heiman (ex LOST HORIZON) performs a duet with Lundgren on the song "Belief"; Oliver Palotai (KAMELOT) appears as guest on all tracks on keyboards except on "Whispering Winds". The band's name has a kind of mystical background. It is supported through the band's mascot "Mentalist", which was designed by Thomas Ewerhard (known as the artist of the cover artwork of the band Avantasia). The Mentalist mascot is a recurring element in the cover artwork and fits in with both, the good and the bad aspects. During the live concerts some magical tricks are planned on stage, while the Mentalist in unique attire (robe, gloves, etc.) is supported by fog and a crystal ball. The front cover was designed by Andreas Marschall (Blind Guardian, Running Wild); the mix & mastering was handled by Christian "Moschus" Moos at www.spacelab-mixing.com in Viersen, Germany.

Every week bunches of perfectly studio reworked new releases flood the market. But, something special is hard to find. Bands that simply create unusual music and an unusual sound without commercial and stylistic calculation are rare, or can only be found in the underground. When it comes to Malleus, you don‘t know where to start. Technically we are dealing with a NWOBHM band. When bassist Andro Coulton left Witchfynde in 1980 after one album and two singles, he and his girlfriend, now his wife Shaz, founded Malleus. Three songs were recorded before they split up again. The material remained unreleased and can now be found as a bonus on this CD. A song like „White Noise“ could easily be on an early Pentagram album. The band used to play a music style that is not sufficiently described by categorizing it as NWOBHM or 70s hard rock. On the one hand, their unique way of playing reminds of harder tracks by Hawkwind and garage rock by the Stooges, on the other hand they transport a special Doom Metal aesthetic, making us think of Pentagram again. The vocals are somewhere between Scott Reagers (Saint Vitus), NWOBHM and Iggy Pop. Packed into an authentic, mercilessly honest production, which you can only love or hate, a sound pattern is created, which young retro bands desperately try to achieve in vain. Using „primitive“ in a positive sense is possible to describe this style, but may also be replaced by „unadulterated“. Kind of a polarization is also foreseeable, but the band members don’t care. Malleus sound as it comes out of the people behind them, similar to Saint Vitus, who were idolized for their sound and uncompromising attitude only many years later.

Hymn is a Norwegian metal duo consisting of singer/guitarist Ole Ulvik Rokseth and drummer Markus Støle. The pair has been working together for 13 years, with projects like Buckaduzz, Tombstones and more recently Sâver. They have also served as session musicians for a diverse range of Norwegian artists like Okay Kaya (Jagjaguwar) and Gundelach (UOK?). The two-headed, four handed beast that is Hymn has been pounding skin and pulling the strings of serial-amplified guitars since 2013, having toured small clubs and festivals in Europe (including the Øya festival, Stick & Stone fest and Freak Valley Festival) at lenght following the release of their debut “Perish” on SVART Records in 2017. Their second offering is entitled “Breach Us” and is due for release in September on Norwegian underground stalwart Fysisk Format. Compared to the band’s first outing, Breach Us is more energetic and more to the point, according to Ole and Markus: “Following the release of SÂVER’s debut LP, and as a natural continuation of HYMN’s previous effort, the idea of approaching our sonic toolbox with sheer, uncompromising force was instinctively satisfying. We wanted a space where we could cut things to the bone and go straight to the core; to the raw, honest and brutal”. On “Crimson”, Hymn expand into more psychedelic territory with guest David Johansson of Swedish doom-masters Kongh on vocals, before the album’s final track “Can I carry you” sees the band teaming up with Guro Moe of noise-rockers MoE to explore new worlds of sonic adventure; by far their most ambitious, piece of music so far. Recorded and mixed by Kim Lillestøl at Amper Tone Studios in Oslo, “Breach Us” is a gargantuan tour de force and a testament to man’s will to exert discipline and human direction to the universal powers of chaos. The duo’s trademark unpredictable riffing, otherworldly power and siamese precision will exalt the daring listener through focus and confusion, craftsmanship and chaos, sucking up the sludgy tradition through their roots and branching up into metal’s unknowable future. “Breach us” is metal coming to life in 2020

A lot of fans consider 2011's "Another Night" to be the band's best effort so far. Is that also Chris' impression? "Yes, I think so. Although with vinyl and CD, "Motivator" sells just as much nowadays. If we are talking about streaming, then 'Another Night In The City' is definitely song #1, with song #2 (care to guess?) only getting about half of that number." So does "The Professor" feel any pressure for "Hard To Stop" to become as successful or even more successful than "Another Night"? "That pressure existed in 2013 and 2014," he thinks, "but not so much anymore. If people want to hear another "Another Night", they can just listen to it again." "I wrote it, I played it, same as always when it comes to High Spirits," explains Chris the way "Hard To Stop" was approached. "There are advantages as well as drawbacks to doing it this way. But to do it any other way would not be High Spirits." With uplifting numbers such as "Hearts Will Burn", "Since You've Been Gone", "Now I Know" and a re-working of the classic "Midnight Sun", "Hard To Stop" will probably be hard to stop and might even surpass "Another Night" in terms of commercial success and popularity in fan circles. The most unusual sounding number on the record appears to be "Voice In The Wind", almost sounding like pop punk meeting "Crusader" period Saxon. Will the band's core audience be open-minded enough to cherish this change in style? "I hope so," says Chris Black, "but maybe not unanimously. I thought "Motivator" was missing a bit of variety, so a song like this was very welcome."

A direct descendant of the "Cultivating Throne of Fur" demo (2019), "Incised Arrival" unravels further into a heavier and more concise form of its near-relative. In this 37-minute display of gut-punching raw power, wicked melodies slither in and out of slow to mid-paced and faster compositions where nothing is forced or superfluous.The sound of the album is quite natural, but wild; one foot rooted circa 86'-93', the other hammers chest right to the present. The guitars scream and scratch machine-like, while Brungard offers a treacherous, powerful vocal performance. The howling resonance of keyboards, combined with brutal drum and bass guitar play, gel into this single unit of hammered deliverance.
