One could add: talking about SLUT's new album "Alienation" is the same as trying to suck in zeitgeist through a straw. SLUT's new album tastes of magnum opus. Authors have their books; directors have their films. In their 20-year-history SLUT have never gone wrong. On the contrary: they act with the sort of confident professionalism that remains a singular phenomenon in the field of German-but-with-English-lyrics alternative rock. With "Alienation", however, SLUT have once more raised the bar. Music and lyrics pulse with that most fitting of German leanwords in English: zeitgeist. The impact of this century's paradox and perfidious motto "create yourself and then be yourself" resembles a mental paraplegia. Instead of responsibly and creatively exploiting our freedom, "most of us turn petit bourgeois" - to quote from SLUT's title song "Alienation" that simultaneously criticizes their car-obsessed hometown Ingolstadt (an Audi production site): "As long as the cars stay running they stay amused". There's two ways to alienation. It's either desperately clinging to what you know while the rest of the world moves on. Or it's losing one's footing in the desperate attempt to stay up to date in one's compulsive struggle to re-define oneself anew every single day. How could one possibly be oneself in an era that constantly demands moving forward? SLUT answer this question all over their musical oeuvre. They square their authenticity-circle by utilizing the familiar as a starting point for new explorations. In between records SLUT interpret a new version of Brecht's "Three Penny Opera" or take me and my novel "Corpus Delicti" on "Schallnovellentour". This is what "Alienation" is trying to say: Do not ever decide between staying put or setting off or even between hiding-place or escape. Don't get lost in "either-or" but find the power in "as well as". Once more quoting from "Anybody Have A Roadmap" off of "Alienation": "Go one and drive" and "Keep your eyes fixed on anything you seem to know". "It's that love and hate relation that keeps us hanging on" ("Alienation"). Musically, this attitude finds its expression in a confident sweep through styles and genres. In art theory "Alienation" stands for a new look on familiar things that allows for critical distance. This is exactly what the album does without relying on mere quotations. The band's typical style remains distinctive and has developed into a musical personality that nonchalantly turns into every direction it pleases. This is how SLUT enter the next level of polyvalency. The songs dispense with classical structures, change direction, surprise on all fronts and still find their way straight into the listener's head. The basis to this is something I would like to call "modest opulence". SLUT show what SLUT got without drowning the audience in orchestral waves. The means remain recognizable, each voice is distinguishable, each sound completely justified, each sound panorama accurately layered reaching the precision of electro-minimalism ("Broke My Backbone") that builds an anthem loop on loop only to end with the sound of a bone saw. There a many ways to grow older most of which, quite frankly, suck. Each and every decision is a massacre of missed opportunities. SLUT and "Alienation" underline that a proper maturing process goes hand in hand with growth of vitality. "Alienation" is a volume of many chapters - all of which tell the story of how to remain sane of mind and body on our journey through the 21st century and through one's own biography. The circle was complete." -- Mother of God Born in 2008 and raised on rock in Morgårdshammar, Sweden, the four-piece Mother of God cast off a lot of the retro 90s mentality of their countrymen in favor of a more modern approach.Well, 20 years more modern, anyway. Mother of God no doubt have some appreciation for the finer things in 90s rock - there are beards to prove it - but musically they incorporate influences from grunge and the heavy grooves of the early 90s. Bands like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains mesh their downtrodden grunge melodies alongside classic inspiration drawn from Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. These might sound like familiar elements - at least the names ring out - but Mother of God bring their own emotional spin to their Small Stone debut, Anthropos, and never quite cooperate with what you think they'll do next. The band has released two prior EPs - 2011's Forging a New Path and their debut - and they recorded and mixed Anthropos in Borlänge with Erik Nerback, Chris Goosman mastered, and Sanna Albenius, Robin Gnista and Alexander von Wieding provided art and layout design. In addition to festival appearances at Getaway Rock,Wacken Open Air in Germany and Peace & Love, Mother of God have shared the stage with YOB, Dozer, Graveyard, Imperial State Electric and more, and they'll look to continue their live domination in Scandinavia and beyond in support of Anthropos, shoving their eclectic sound and undeniable hooks right in the faces of everyone who thinks they know what heavy rock should sound like. The band has dug out a niche of its own, combining their love and respect for traditional blues and classic rock to become one of the most loved and respected bands in the underground rock community. Always a freight train live, the band has toured hard with the likes of Clutch and Halfway to Gone, in the process gathering fans, friends, and drinking partners all over the world. Five Horse Johnson's new album, The Taking of Black Heart is due for release via Small Stone Records in January 2013. It is the band's first full-length record since 2006's The Mystery Spot, which saw Five Horse Johnson, with the help of Clutch's Jean Paul Gaster helming the drums, create its strongest album up to that point. That record saw Gaster and Steve Smith provide more power than a Super Hemi. Brad Coffin's guitar never sounded lither and his voice never stronger. Eric Oblander's harp, meanwhile, is as sharp as a tailfin, his gravelly vocal delivery a growling, howling counterpoint to Coffin's gruff style. Other collaborators on The Mystery Spot included Roadsaw/Antler's Craig Riggs and Big Chief's Phil Durr and Mark Dancey. Durr is now an official member of the band. Now though, FHJ is back, preparing to rip the world a new orifice all over again with The Taking of Black Heart, which again features Gaster on drums and is produced by J Robbins of Jawbox (who also contributes some organ and percussion). The Five Horse Johnson lineup for the album is Eric Oblander (vox/harp), Brad Coffin (vox/ guitar), Steve Smith (bass) and Phil Dürr (guitar). The album also includes a special guest appearance from Robin Zander of Cheap Trick, who contributes vocals on the song "You're My Girl (I Don'tWant To Talk About It)". Five Horse Johnson is not a band that makes apologies. A decade into its life, compromise is not an option. The truth is, this is hard, heavy, dirty blues rock 'n' roll for people that like that sort of thing. This music is for people who like the sound of an engine roaring or the feeling obtained by following a cold beer with a shot of good whisky. Stereo Board have reported that American ska/punk band Less Than Jake will mark their 20th Anniversary by releasing Greetings and Salutations, an amalgamation of the EPs Greetings from Less Than Jake and Seasons Greetings from Less Than Jake.
