Formed in Buffalo, New York, in 1989, MERCURY REV quick grew to become leading figures in left field alternative rock. Earlier albums veered towards experimental, off-kilter psychedelia but by the end of the decade, the band had developed their own brand of serene, piano-based Americana with the acclaimed, best-selling LP Deserter’s Songs (1998). Originally issued in January 2005, THE SECRET MIGRATION was the sixth album by Mercury Rev and followed All Is Dream (2001) – which has already been reissued as a deluxe edition and more recently a double vinyl set by Cherry Red. In the UK, where the band were signed to V2, the album spawned two singles, ‘In A Funny Way’ and ‘Across Yer Ocean’. Cherry Red Records are proud to unveil a deluxe 5-CD edition of this sometimes overlooked album, compiled by Jonathan Donaghue & Sean ‘Grasshopper’ Mackowiak. Joining the original album are a second disc of B-sides and previously unissued outtakes, a third disc wholly devoted to hitherto unheard demos and a fourth disc of in-concert material culled from shows around the globe (again, previously unreleased). For good measure, Disc 5 revisits the band’s subsequent soundtrack album, Hello Blackbird. Among the bonus tracks are Rev-esque versions of Bobby Charles' Catskill Mountains inspired masterpiece 'Tennessee Blues', the plaintive modern spiritual 'Afraid' originally recorded by Nico, two Paul Westerberg penned gems 'Androgynous' and 'Good Day', Daniel Johnston's ode to healing 'Blue Clouds' as well as a sublime Rev duet featuring Bonnie Anthony on their version of 'I Never Had It So Good' (a song the Rev chose from Kris and Rita's 1973 LP “Full Moon”. This expanded edition of THE SECRET MIGRATION is presented as a plush, hardbook book containing original album lyrics, lots of visuals and new sleeve-notes by acclaimed author and journalist Barney Hoskyns. In addition, HELLO BLACKBIRD also receives its debut as a limited vinyl pressing!

Such was the singer’s success that in 1972, Randy’s Records gathered a dozen of the singer’s recordings for what was his – and the company’s - very first long-playing record, “Bridge Over Troubled Waters”. Concurrently issued in the UK by Trojan Records, the album firmly established London as a major recording star, with highlights including popular reggae interpretations of the title track, along with ‘A Little Love’, ‘Shake A Hand’, ‘It’s Now Or Never’ and ‘Walk With Love’. By this time, Trojan had launched its own Randy’s subsidiary label to showcase the cream of its Jamaican counterpart’s output, and it is the majority of tracks that saw issue on the UK imprint between 1971 and 1973, along with remaining highlights from this period (including those featured on the unissued Trojan album, “A Little Love”) that comprise the remainder of this essential double-disc collection of classic early reggae sides.

Spanning the years 1986 to 1990, the band released three studio albums and various singles that feature on this collection plus the related bonus tracks taken from the band’s b-sides and 12” releases. It is the definitive collection of the band’s material available. CD 1 features the ten original album tracks of the band’s first studio album “Georgia Satellites” that was released in 1986. It was produced by Jeff Glixman. There are eight bonus tracks including two mixes, Party Mix and Kick ‘N’ Lick Remix of the single ‘Battleship Chains’, five live tracks including the band’s cover of Lou Reed’s ‘I’m Waiting For The Man’, which featured as a b-side on the band’s best known single ‘Keep Your Hands To Yourself’. CD 2 focuses on the band’s second album, “Open All Night”, with the 11 original album tracks plus six related bonus tracks. The bonus material includes the remix of their single, 'Sheila' along with live recordings of 'Let It Rock', 'Battleship Chains' and 'Railroad Steel'." CD 3 is the band’s final Elektra album, “In The Land Of Salvation And Sin” from 1989. The album was produced by Joe Hardy. This CD features the 14 original album tracks plus five bonus offerings including the b-sides ‘Saddle Up’ and ‘That Woman’, the US promo edit versions of ‘Shake That Thing’ and ‘All Over But The Cryin’’ and the UK single version of ‘Another Chance’. This release has been made with the full cooperation of the band. In 1973, Fancy came together around producer Mike Hurst – alongside guitarist Ray Fenwick and bassist Mo Foster – to record a glam rock cover version of The Troggs’ hit ‘Wild Thing’. Issued on Atlantic, the single was a U.S. hit, peaking at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 (it also reached #31 in Australia). Prompted by the success, a touring band was assembled with new singer Annie Kavanagh. And an album, Wild Thing, yielded a second American hit, ‘Touch Me’. In summer 1974, Fancy signed to Arista, and embarked on a U.S. tour, supporting Kiss, Wishbone Ash and Steppenwolf (in early 1975, they also supported 10cc at the Hammersmith Odeon). The new deal led to a second album Something To Remember (re-titled Turns You On in the States), promoted by two singles, ‘She's Ridin' The Rock Machine’ and a cover of Steve Wonder’s ‘I Was Made To Love Her’. In late 1975, Fancy bowed out with a non-album single, ‘Music Maker’. With input from original band members, this welcome triple-CD set offers up all of Fancy’s studio recordings – both albums plus non-LP tracks – plus a previously unheard live recording from legendary jazz club Ronnie Scott’s. As a bonus, Disc 3 closes with a fascinating US radio interview. Also included are two brand new tracks, Ray Fenwick’s ‘Sidewinder’ and Mo Foster’s ‘Driving Home’.

A new 5 Disc boxed set anthology (5CDs / 1 DVD) celebrating the recordings of Scottish rock giants Big Country, made between 1993 and 1994 for Chrysalis Records imprint Compulsion Featuring 71 tracks on five discs, including the albums ‘The Buffalo Skinners’ and the double live album ‘Without The Aid Of A Safety Net’, recorded at Barrowlands Ballroom in Glasgow on 29 December 1993. Includes rare B-Sides / bonus tracks, US radio mixes, previously unreleased instrumental demos, plus the original demo for every track on ‘The Buffalo Skinners’ album. DVD includes highlights from the Glasgow Barrowlands concert, together with promo videos for the singles ‘Ships’ and ‘Alone’ Cherry Red Records are pleased to announce the release of “Out Beyond The River: The Complete Compulsion Recordings”, a newly remastered six disc boxed set featuring the original classic line-up of Scottish rock giants Big Country, fronted by the late Stuart Adamson. The Eighties had seen Big Country rack up four consecutive UK Top 10 albums and 12 UK Top 40 singles. “The Crossing”, their 1983 debut album, had spent 80 weeks on the charts and cracked the Top 20 in the US, while their second album, “Steeltown”, had gone straight in at No. 1. And the Nineties had got off to a good start too: their greatest hits collection “Through A Big Country” entered the chart at No. 2, and was only kept from the top spot by another best of, The Carpenters’ “Only Yesterday”. Despite all this success, a difference of opinion with their label meant all was not well in the Big Country camp. However Big Country had a friend and ally in Chris Briggs, the man who had originally signed them ten years earlier. Following huge success with Robbie Williams, in 1992 EMI gave Briggs his own imprint, Compulsion Records. In a press release to announce Big Country as his ‘new’ signing he said, “I went to see the band on the last tour, and thought they were better now than then (when I first signed them)”. ‘The Buffalo Skinners’ restored Big Country to the Top 40, peaking at No. 25 on the album chart. In a review for Q magazine an ambivalent 3-star review from Johnny Black ended, “It couldn’t be anyone other than Big Country and, if Adamson can maintain this level of quality control in the songs, his band may rise again.” Neil McKay of Sunday Life described the album as "rousing and tuneful as in (Big Country's) early heyday". In 2004 Ian Cranna writing in Record Collector described “Without A Safety Net” as “Big Country at their best. Honest, thoughtful Rock, played with passion and a conscious avoidance of frills or poses.” A description that best sums up this band.
