Originally released as two separate 10" discs on Blue Note in 1951 and 1954, these sessions, all recorded at the WOR radio studios in New York City, represent the very finest recordings in Bud Powell's career. Called the Charlie Parker of the piano, Bud Powell was a giant of his instrument and one of the key inventors of the bebop style. However, after suffering a head injury due to police brutality, Powell was always "Un Poco Loco", to cite his greatest masterpiece. This double LP is comprised of three sessions, the first of which (recorded in 1949) found Bud playing in a quintet called 'Bud Powell's Modernists' with Fats Navarro on trumpet, Sonny Rollins on tenor sax, Tommy Potter on bass and Roy Haynes on drums. The following two dates (from 1951 and 1953) are two trio sessions, first with Curley Russell on bass and Max Roach on drums, and later with George Duvivier on bass and Arthur Taylor on drums. Also includes the previously unreleased "I've Got You Under My Skin" from the 1953 session. On trumpeter Lee Morgan's third album for Blue Note, recorded on 24 March 1957, Morgan's sextet-comprised of Gigi Gryce on alto and flute, Benny Golson on tenor, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Charlie Persip on drums-showcases five compositions by sideman Benny Golson. The numbers include the fascinating "Hassan's Dream" as well as "I Remember Clifford", a tribute to the late trumpet player Clifford Brown. Tragically Morgan (a trumpet player like Brown) himself would also meet with an untimely demise, but in 1957, the nineteen year old Philadelphia native was one of the leading trumpeters on the New York jazz scene and remained so until his death at age 33. Charles' distinctive style transcended genres and influenced musicians from every musical background and from every corner of the globe, but it was during the mid-fifties that Charles really began to rule the R&B charts. His legendary debut LP-originally released in 1957 (and later renamed Hallelujah! I Love Her So) for Atlantic-was essentially a collection of those hit singles. In 1955 Ray had his first number one hit, "I've Got A Woman", followed by his second and third number 1 hits, "A Fool For You", and "Drown In My Own Tears", over just the next few months. Almost all of the remaining tracks on the album were also Top Ten hits from that same period, including "Greenbacks", "Hallelujah I Love Her So" and "This Little Girl Of Mine". One of the greatest jazz musicians to ever come out of the UK, saxophonist Edward Brian "Tubby" Hayes began playing professionally when he was just 15 years old, quickly rising to stardom in the late 1950s as co-leader of the legendary Jazz Couriers alongside saxophonist Ronnie Scott. Recorded in December 1959-shortly after Scott left the Couriers to open his own club (the famed onnie Scott's' in Soho)-Tubby's Groove is widely considered to be one of his greatest studio albums. Here Tubbs plays in a quartet setting with former Couriers, Terry Shannon on piano and Jeff Clyne on bass, as well as the great Phil Seamen on drums. Although Tubby became ill and died at age 38, he was at this time still very much in his prime, as can be heard in his virtuoso playing on tracks like the opener "Tin Tin Deo" and "Sunny Monday". Although Clifford Brown died in a car accident when he was just 25, he is still considered one of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time, managing to influence an entire generation of horn players in his short life. This is partially because he recorded so prolifically, perhaps most notably with a superlative quintet he formed with drummer Max Roach in 1954-widely considered the gold standard in hard bop. This historic album, recorded live at two separate dates played at Gene Norman's Crescendo nightclub in L.A. in April and May of 1954, represents some of the quintet's earliest recordings. The first four tracks (side A) actually feature a seldom heard early line-up that included Teddy Edwards on tenor sax, Carl Perkins on piano and George Bledsoe on bass, while the classic quintet line-up-featuring Harold Land on tenor sax, Richard Powell on piano and George Morrow on bass-can be heard on side B. In the late fifties the Chicago-born John Jenkins was an up and coming young alto saxophone player on the New York jazz scene, playing with top jazzmen like Charles Mingus, Donald Byrd, and Hank Mobley, among others. It looked like he was going to have a long and promising career, when suddenly in the mid-sixties he gave up music altogether and disappeared from the jazz world. Thankfully, before doing so he recorded several sessions, including two as leader for Blue Note in 1957. This quintet session (recorded with the all-star rhythm section of Kenny Burrell, Sonny Clark, Paul Chambers, and Danny Richmond) is considered to be the better of the two. Here Jenkins also gets an opportunity to show off his flair for composition as well, contributing three of the six pieces found on the album ("Motif", "Sharon" and "Chalumeau"). After such a competent start, jazz fans can only mourn the fact that Jenkins didn't continue recording! Style: Jazz
