From their youthful mixtapes Sealed For Freshness, Church League Champions to their breakout mixtape Mania! and two studio albums The Div and G.M.B., the trend-setting California trio Pac Div (brothers LIKE & Mibbs and BeYoung) have always been a little ahead of the curve. In the meantime Like has officially stepped into the forefront and has been quickly establishing himself as a multi-faceted solo artist, producer and DJ. Never one to be relegated to just one creative medium, the mic isn’t the only vehicle of expression for this renaissance man. Eager to put his sonic stamp on the game, Like secretly honed his skills behind the boards for years before making his presence as a producer known to the world. With an eclectic sound inspired by everything from J Dilla and DJ Premier to Chicago juke and Radiohead, he would soon begin cooking up sound creations for up and coming emcees. One of those tracks, Dying of Thirst” would land on Kendrick Lamar’s breakout 2012 LP good kid, m.A.A.d city. The track earned him a much coveted Grammy nomination as well as solidified Like as a new force on the production side. Continuing to build on his synergy with the TDE camp, he also produced Anderson .Paak’s Room In Here” featuring The Game & Sonya Elise from Paak’s runaway smash album Malibu . LIKE: „It takes me a long time to create. Especially when I thrive on inspiration. I need the experiences of life to help push me artistically. The reason I titled this album 'Songs Made While High' wasn't because I'm a pseudo-druggy (I only smoke weed and occasionally take shrooms). As cliche as it may sound, music gets me high. I'm addicted to sounds and melodies, Chords and samples- colors and soundscapes my brother and I heard growing up in church, or cleaning our parents home Saturday mornings (mom always played Sade and Anita baker). STUDIO is Benny’s 5th studio album. Not just casually called by its name. No, there is something else happening here. The word ‘STUDIO’ originates from the Latin word ‘studium’, which stands for ‘studying’. The studio is the place where painters, artists and musicians learn, study and create. It’s the place where Benny is most comfortable. Benny’s Amsterdam based studio has an amazing view of the canals. STUDIO is an ode to this place, which he built 4 years ago, and everything it has brought him. Because it brought him more than just the music he produced there. It gave him his place in the world and with it so many other things. All of which is to be heard on his new album. You find him exposing true love, follow his search for a home, he opens up about settling down and he speaks of breaking through old patterns in which he found himself being stuck for years. It has been quiet around Benny Sings. Although there was a lot written about him (with an ode to his complete oeuvre in The Huffington Post as a highlight) and he had a big YouTube hit with millions of views for his co-operation with French electro artist DatA and even a tour throughout Europe and Asia; he didn’t release a lot of solo material. After 4 albums the navel-gazing was over and it was time for a change. Besides creating a lot of music for film and television, he produced music for artists such as BEA1991, which generated a lot of attention worldwide with raving reviews by The Fader and The Guardian amongst others. Building his studio and actually taking up that challenge opened Benny’s mind, which created space for a new album to arise. Thanks to the co-operation with the young BEA1991 Benny is introduced to instruments that are new to him, after which he found himself coming out of the warm analogue world of the 70’s and 80’s and go straight into the icy digital world of the 90’s. And with that the album STUDIO is born. The result is interesting. The record is not at all icy. The warm sound of Benny, which we have come accustomed to, is yet again prominent on this album. STUDIO is an album, full of color, beats and melancholy, but with songs that go much deeper than we are used to from Benny. It’s remarkable that he has worked with far more people on this album than he did on previous records. Mayer Hawtorne (America’s number 1 blue eyed soul singer) sings on one of his tracks, we hear Rick Rubin’s protégée GoldLink rapping and we find Stone Throw’s golden boys The Stepkids in a surprising role of mixing the album. Even though Benny has been crossing borders with his work for years, he only seems to really get the full effect of it just now. STUDIO is a record with international allure. mini LP. Olivier was born in Washington DC of Haitian and Cameroon heritage, but spent most of his childhood studying in the remote countryside of the UK. During his youth Olivier's CD and sometimes cassette collection would range from hip hop, RnB to Garage and British rock. Olivier remained in the Uk and completed a Bio Science Degree in Oxford but could could suppress his real passion for music. After graduation he began a 'Jekyll and Hyde' life. A scientist by day; recording artist by night.??He went on to receive significant international attention for his work as a featured singer/songwriter back then still under the name Olivier Daysoul. He worked and toured worldwide with various artists including Oddisee, C2C, Onra and Bibio, Hudson Mohawke as such as other producers from the Warp Records family. Despite all of this, Olivier felt something was missing...A true reflection of his own voice and sound.??A hiatus from feature recordings and some deep introspection found Olivier discovering his love for blues, rock and funk. Many late night guitar sessions resulted in new soundscapes. A new chapter was opening. The former 'Daysoul' moniker exchanged for his original birth name 'St.Louis'. Producing and writing all his own music and playing his own instrumentation; Olivier St.louis was embarking on a new road. The Black Music EP coming out on Jakarta Records gives listeners both old and new a taste of Olivier's true music palate. With the aim of breaking the mould and taking down boundaries, Andrea's "Black Magic" is the result of a combination of influences melted together in guitar amps to create a wavy piece of music. From the vocal-oriented track "Down" featuring Vanessa Elisha's lush vocals to the club-melting "Without You", Black Magic has a wide range of aesthetics and a particular attention to detail that creates its own unique world much like the artist behind it. Young Parisian native Andrea has been building up heat over recent months with his innovative live shows (playing at shows alongside Flume, AlunaGeorge, Shlohmo, Bondax and Glitch Mob amongst others) and his own productions and remixes of The xx, AlunaGeorge, Sam Smith, Say Lou Lou, Rosie Lowe, Stwo, Slow Magic, Drake and The Weeknd to name but a few, drawing in fans and scoring radio support from tastemakers such as Benji B, B.Traits, Monki and Rob Da Bank at BBC Radio 1 and Eddy Temple Morris at XFM. Some of his solo efforts have come in the form of a track on Trapdoor Records Trapdoor Volume 2 compilation series, a track on Flirtini's Heartbreaks & Promises Volume 2 compilation and the much anticipated 'Tenderly'. Add to this his residency on Rinse France, his own label Moose Records, countless remixes, free downloads, a collaboration on Ta-Ku's Create&Explore project, Andrea's very own #OneSampleOneDay project and his recent NASA EP and it becomes clear that Andrea is one of those artists who puts the work in. Thankfully, he has no intention of slowing down! 100% of the proceeds of this release will be donated to refugees from Iraq and Syria. A first donation of 3500 Euro has been made from the profits from the first press and has already been distributed in the region. Unreleased music by IAMNOBODI, Brenk, Suff Daddy, Shuko, Farhot, House Shoes, Cid Rim, Dexter, Torky Tork and many more. Read the full story here, as told by Brenk who initiated the release: My old friend Aras asked me one day if I could perform at the charity event he organizes for the refugees in the Kurdistan Region for the people who are on the run from IS fighters in Iraq ans Syria. He explained the circumstances to me and pointed out the immense struggle these families have to go through day by day. He told me that he and his team are about to fly the money directly to the people in need by themselves. The proceeds will be distributed among refugees, in the Dohug and Erbil Governorate which is very close to the Iraqi/Syrian Border. Due to it’s location a huge part of the Syrian as well as the Yezidi and christian refugees ended up in this region. The money will be delivered directly to the refugees, to help them attend to their most immediate needs, such as food, clean water and warm clothing for the winter. It was clear for me that I had to support his endeavors. As I realized that performing there wouldn't be possible because of me being on tour with the Betty Ford Boys, I wanted to find another way to support this project with something bigger than just a performance. I started calling the homies and everybody was immediately down to support "FOR THE PEOPLE" with an unreleased instrumental. There you have it; this is how the idea for the compilation was born. I would like to thank each and everyone who bought this record and supported this movement. Also I would like to shout out all my brothers who sent me these dope ass beats. And last but definitely not least, Jannis and Jakarta Records for seeing my little vision and making this an official release via Jakarta to help raise even more money.
