New Order's fifth studio album, released on 30 January 1989 and their last album released on [l857]. Recorded on Ibiza and in Peter Gabriel's [l267339]. The album adds Balearic Beat and Acid House influences to the band's typical blend of electronic and rock. The cover is another [a1069010]/[a512289] cooperation, using a garden ornament cherub statue. Saville thought the bacchanalian image was ironically fitting for the new "drug-fuelled hedonism" in the music scene. The first New Order album to reach number one in the UK charts. Several tracks were individually released as singles. An instrumental version of "Vanishing Point" was used on the BBC series Making Out. In the UK, there were several marketing items along with the album release, including an A5 sticker in the NME ("Press Technique"), billboards ("Advertising Technique"), a TV commercial, a set of four A4 paper sheets in green, white, red, and yellow ("Campaign Technique"), and a set of two posters, advertising the different media formats. Released in the US in January 1989. In 2008 the album was re-released as 2xCD Collector's Edition set, with the bonus disc containing non-album singles, 12" mixes and b-sides.
