Advocated by giants of the genre, Hauschka and Nils Frahm, classically trained pianist, violinist, producer, and composer, Poppy Ackroyd turned heads in the neo-classical world with her previous works Escapement and Feathers, as well as her involvement in Hidden Orchestra (Tru Thoughts). Freshly signed to Bjork’s label One Little Indian Records, Ackroyd’s critically acclaimed back catalogue is reissued on CD and vinyl. Through studying contemporary classical piano works and listening to electronic music, Poppy began to develop her own compositional style, using conventional pianistic ideas whilst also inhabiting the world of sound beyond the keyboard, using unconventional techniques to 'play' other parts of the instruments as well. Like Escapement, her second album Feathers mostly consists of piano and violin, but the palate of sounds is increased with other acoustic keyboard instruments - including harmonium, clavichord, harpsichord and spinet – and in the string sections Poppy's violin lines are augmented by guest cellist Su-a Lee. Poppy's beloved, restored Blüthner grand piano in her studio is again the backbone of the album, providing most of the melodies, bass lines and percussive sounds. Other material originated from improvised recording sessions at the Russell / Mirrey Collection of keyboard instruments in Edinburgh. Having previously spent time there dismantling different pianos to understand how their mechanisms work and make sound, she was given complete freedom on her own in the museum to experiment with around fifty keyboard instruments from the 16th century to the 19th century. Selecting a few instruments for Feathers that produced a variety of different timbres, it was again the other sounds these instruments could make that interested her, when treating them as sources for melodic or percussive material. Recordings of unfamiliar sounds, which include brushing / plucking the strings and tapping/stroking the frames or soundboards, are combined with accidental 'imperfect' sounds that come from playing the instrument, such as pedal noise or the sound of harpsichord shutters opening and closing. There is an intimate feel to the recordings as these older instruments are not designed to project sound loudly, so the microphones were placed very close to capture the minutest detail. Field recordings add to the cinematic and atmospheric quality of the music: chiming wall clocks in Timeless, traffic noise on Roads, and the wave and pebble sounds from Brighton beach in Birdwoman.

Realising the violin had the same potential, she has spent the a few years composing delicate, intricate and beautifully atmospheric music by manipulating and multi-tracking sounds from these two instruments. Her debut album Escapement stays true to this idea. Every sound, with the exception of a few field recordings, is created using only either the piano or the violin. The seven tracks are a combination of piano melodies and chords - played both conventionally or created inside the piano using fingers, e-bows and plectrums - violin textures, melodies and pizzicato ri s and finally delicate beats composed of hits, plucks, taps and scrapes made using hands, drumsticks, beaters and small cymbals on either the frame, strings or dampers of the piano. There are often five or more different percussive lines working alongside each other. In order to compose in this way, Poppy had to learn how to record and produce the music herself, as working with someone else would have been far too time consuming. Having discovered and restored a beautiful but neglected grand piano, she bought a laptop, digital recorder and speakers. Everything from the piano is recorded in her home studio with just this one microphone.

The career of Animals That Swim has already been dissected once on this blog many entries ago, so its probably pointless me picking their progress (or lack thereof) to pieces yet again. Lets just begin by saying that Workshy, their debut album, is nothing like as wonderful as the work which followed it on I Was The King, but the flashes of brilliance contained within certainly make it worth a listen if you followed my advice and went away to purchase its younger brother. Where King lilts and soars, Workshy fizzes, jabs and jangles, sounding like a quintessential indie disc. From the opening line of I cant wake up, the skys too dull to rouse me and the clanging guitar lines which back it, its clearly not an album with its eyes on the top ten, even though the band have since said that they were always aiming to make popular records. Lyrically its also a less cheery prospect, but somehow still frequently hilarious, using wit to bring sparkle to the least likely subjects. The motor crash tale of Pink Carnations somehow manages to cover the subject with a chirpy, brassy backing, and even turns its attention to the absurdity of celebrity at the end when it mentions a famous hospital visiting bald shithead with a teddy bear. We can only speculate who this might have been. Elsewhere, the astounding, marginally Go-Betweens-esque Silent Film paints an outer London suburban picture which manages to be both delicate and recognizable, and their interpretation of Charles Bukowskis Sway with Me is also surprising in that, unlike most melodic interpretations of poetry, it works just as well as the rest of the material on the album and fits its jagged nature perfectly. Animals That Swim could almost be Bukowskis British backing band, swaying with bleary eyes behind him. Workshy should be approached with a bit more caution than perhaps most of their other work in that its an imperfect whole. Susies Friends and Saint Francis, for example, almost become dirges at points. However, considering you can download the lot for free below, whos complaining? In this case, the record sellers on ebay and Amazon probably wont be worried about some obscure blog cutting into their trade – I noticed that one major site was selling it for 68 cents recently. At that sort of retail price, you might want to get yourself a proper copy after downloading this, a vinyl rip which unfortunately doesnt have mint sound. Sadly, this is the only copy I own at the moment.
