The highly acclaimed Finnish death doomsters return with their most ambitious work to date. Produced once again by the Triptykon and Dark Fortress guitarist V. Santura, Kuolemanlaakso's sophomore album "Tulijoutsen" ("The Fire Swan") explores unconquered grounds of heaviness, and pushes the band into a new level of melancholy. The 50-minute magnum opus was inspired by the grandeur of the Finnish forests, serene eeriness of the lakes and early 1900s poetry and folklore. Thus it was only natural for the band to live the lyrics, so to speak, and isolate themselves in a secluded location in the middle of the woods, and capture the true essence of the songs on hard disk. Musically the band has taken giant leaps in new territories, but not forgetting the crushing heaviness and the love for the avant-garde, which define the Kuolemanlaakso sound. Sammal relies on live playing in the studio, which brings the listener closer to the band: the production breathes so carefree that you can almost touch the notes floating in the air. No 2 is not a companion piece to the debut, nor is it a preview of the second full-length, which will be released via Svart Records next winter. It is a mini-album, which stands on its own. Sammal wanted to clear their closet from older gems, and prepare for a new era with this release. Three of the five songs featured on the EP are old demo songs, which were re-recorded at the same session with a new track "Vankina varisten" and a cover of Aphrodite's Child's "Magic Mirror," translated as "Peilin taikaa," in the summer of 2013. This official 20th anniversary release marks the vinyl debut of Mordicus' debut album "Dances From Left", originally release by Thrash Records on CD in 1993. As an added bonus the package also features an exact replica of the band's debut 7" EP "Three Way Dissection" from 1992. "Despite 20 years of close scrutiny since its release, it is still easy to say Mordicus' Dances from Left was one of those groundbreaking releases that, along other early Finnish Death Metal albums such as Sentenced's Shadows of the Past, Convulse's World without God, Funebre's Children of the Scorn and Demigod's Slumber of Sullen Eyes, built up the solid foundation for all that what was to come. Dances from Left, along with others, allowed the Finnish Death Metal scene to stand shoulder to shoulder with the worldwide phenomenon knows as "Swedish Death Metal." Mordicus were hungry and set out to make the sort of extraordinary gurgling and mind-piercing noises that would separate them from our comrades in crime to the west.
