Don't expect anything simpler from me!' Emmanuel Nunes (1941-2012) was an artist of almost intimidating ability and self-confident stubbornness much like his teachers Karlheinz Stockhausen and Pierre Boulez. Apart from early works and large musical drama projects, his output consists primarily of two large-scale cycles. The first contains nine works, including Minnesang for twelve vocal soloists: a mystical and spiritual work that translates the medieval art of Minnesang into modern terms and whose musical effects are founded on the intelligibility of the texts. Nunes also composed a number of pieces not included in these cycles, among them the orchestral work Musivus, which was written for Expo 98 and premiered in a revised and expanded version in Cologne in 2001. Musivus is 'a monument of spatialization' that can make the listener dizzy with its tiny fields of musical activity that bloom into a gigantic visual and acoustical mosaic that is extremely changing to a traditional, process-oriented way of listening.

Erinnerungsspuren by Alberto Posadas is an homage to the piano in six parts. In his "reminiscences", the Spanish composer brings to mind some of the best in his profession, taking them as sources for his studies of the piano's sound space. From François Couperin to Robert Schumann and Claude Debussy to Bernd Alois Zimmermann and Karlheinz Stockhausen. What matters to Posadas in his cycle is not to make explicit connections to the past; he rather discerns concepts from the historical repertoire, namely Erinnerungsspuren (Memory Traces), that find expression in pianistic experiments. Special playing techniques with the pedals, with preparations and inside the piano allow changes of individual sounds and micro-intervals while they are resounding, thus creating a trans-historical sound space. In his cycle Alberto Posadas gives less answers than he raises questions in which the music of his six predecessors can be heard as sounds of remembrance: How can new and old material put each other in a different light and perhaps even redefine themselves? And what can be the meaning of quotations when it comes to building bridges between old and new, between the known and the unknown?

Modern avant-garde composers have transformed noise into a legitimate element of music – not least by an increased use of percussion instruments. For this CD, the young multi-percussionist Leonie Klein has collected a number of solo works that represent various stages in the development of New Music. Leonie Klein masterfully reveals each work’s unique profile in the field of tension between composers’ intentions and interpretational freedom. This collection displays multiple aspects of modern percussion music and is a representative exploration of an important area of New Music. Leonie Klein’s interpretation of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Zyklus (1959), written for an orchestra of percussion instruments played by a single performer, is a kaleidoscope of sound colours. In Iannis Xenakis’s Psappha from 1975, constantly changing rhythmic patterns depict musically structured periodicity. Helmut Lachenmann’s Intérieur I (1966) gives life to exquisitely subtle sound events, while Nicolaus A. Huber in Póthos (2010) brings contrasting elements into harmony to reveal “the longing of one note for the next”. In Thunder (1993), Peter Eötvös allows the timpani to achieve constantly changing pitches through the use of rapid pedal adjustments, and Johannes Julius Fischer’s repetitive Gathering (2018) for prepared vibraphone represents the current world of percussion music.
