Sculptures’ is Alex Ives (AKA Specimens) most ambitious and daring project to date, following on from releases on underground imprint A Giant Fern, Amsterdam-based Shimmering Moods Records &
the collaborative Specimens x Daniel Wiesmayr release, ‘Water &
Concrete’ on London’s Tenderly Surrender – the title track of which soundtracked a short from film maker &
director, Sophie Littman, premiered via Nowness. Wearing his influences on his sleeve and with a nod to past and present noise pioneers such as Throbbing Gristle, Leyland Kirby, K.Leimer and Ben Frost, ‘Sculptures’ sonically pans between the dream-like fog heard on the track’s ethereal closer, ‘French Morning’, as well as, ‘Cerulean Forest’, and cold industrial textures prevalent on tracks such as ‘A Marble Hallway’ or ‘Thuvian’. The lighter, more melodic passages perfectly hold together the record’s jagged, abrasive undertones, occasionally leaning towards a more classical feel in a way the likes of William Basinski and Sean McCann display with regular expertise – best illustrated on the tracks ‘Piano Loops’ and ‘VI.VI.MMXV’. Ives, who also holds a monthly residency on London’s Radar Radio, said of this release “I didn’t want to make a record intentionally difficult to listen to, but I wanted uncomfortable moments. It was important for me to try and make the record sound as human as possible and in some places distinctly live” This ‘human’ feel discussed by Specimens is partly achieved through utilising samples of Sudanese wrestling &
Tuvan Throat Singing, adding a charm that prevents the record from ever feeling too slick. Mastered by iconic sound artist and Room 40 label boss, Lawrence English – a man who also was a key influence in the sonic palette harnessed by Specimens. Available on 13th January via First Terrace Records

180 GRAM AUDIOPHILE VINYL VOCALS BY DON FARDON FIRST PRESSING OF 750 NUMBERED COPIES ON RED VINYL The Sorrows are a rock band formed in 1963 in Coventry, Warwickshire, United Kingdom by Pip Whitcher, and were part of the British beat boom of the 60s. They were a fixture in the English mod scene. The Sorrows released their first album, Take a Heart, in 1965 on Piccadilly Records. They played a hard, aggressive version of contemporary R&B;
later this style of music was termed freakbeat. The group's first single entitled "I Don't Wanna Be Free" was received with interest and the potential of the group was particularly remarked upon. The third single "Take A Heart" gave them that elusive break. The song was written by Mike Dallon, a young man in his early twenties, who was just beginning to make his mark as a talent to be reckoned with. Two more of his compositions, "She's Got The Action" and "Let Me In", are featured on this album and it can be clearly seen that Mike has a strong feeling for the style the Sorrows emulate.

180 GRAM AUDIOPHILE VINYL GATEFOLD SLEEVE Judee Sill was an American singer and songwriter. She released two albums and partially completed a third album before her death in 1979. Sill encountered Graham Nash and David Crosby and toured with them for a time as their opening act, a year before the release of her debut album. She was hired by the Turtles to write songs, on which a few of them appeared on her debut album, such as "Lady-O". Two of Sill's biggest influences were Bach and Ray Charles. Judee Sill's eponymous debut album of the same name was originally released in late 1971. Backing musicians include John Beck and Jim Pons from the Leaves. The majority of the album was produced by Henry Lewy, noted for his work with Joni Mitchell throughout the 70s. Graham Nash handled the duties for the single "Jesus Was a Cross Maker" with his production designed to aim for radio airplay before the release of the album. Judee Sill featured Sill's voice in multiple overdubs, often in a four-part chorale or fugue. The songs are delivered in an acoustic style on guitar and, for "Jesus was a Cross Maker" and "Enchanted Sky Machines," on piano. The songs on the album feature elements of folk, country, and gospel, but also strong classical influences.

Massimiliano Pagliara debuts on Ostgut Ton with his new EP, Time And Again. Born and raised in the deep south of Italy Massimiliano Pagliara made his way to Berlin in 2001, quickly diving headfirst into the German capital’s club scene (particularly Berghain’s predecessor club, OstGut) until he started DJing in 2003. By the time of his joining with Ostgut Booking agency in October 2015 Massi had already constantly delivered – the DJ and producer has left a strong mark on House music throughout the years with energetic, playful and deep sets behind the decks, two acclaimed solo albums on Live At Robert Johnson and various collaboration projects. His residency at Panorama Bar therefore was a no-brainer – but the musical link by one of House music’s finest with the club’s label was still missing. Now Massi steps up with four new tracks and his first release on Ostgut Ton. Heavily influenced by classic Chicago House, Electro and early Disco music Massi’s new EP serves as a cross-section of his musical interest as a producer and sonic palette as a selector. Working with vintage studio gear, analogue synthesizers and classic drum machines, his Time And Again EP is as warm and soulful as it’s lush and bursting with strength. While the title “If I Try To Forget I Will Miss You Even More” on A1 may hint to romantic and bluesy off-dancefloor music, the opposite is true: the Italo Disco-meets-House track takes a flamboyant development throughout its 7-minutes, is spot-on from the first to last note with glorious synth arpeggios and catchy melodies. Far from mourning ex-lovers but rather for meeting new ones. This EP’s eponymous track on A2 starts with a machine-like rhythm until impelling synth harmonies kick in – loose yourself in the crowd, in a moment, over and over, “Time And Again”. “To A Faraway Place” connects to this feeling, but starts off on a darker tone – then after the first 60 seconds the mood swings, steadily pushing up and forward until this warm synth- and percussion-driven House cut reaches its climax at about 5 minutes in when a compelling melody takes over. Tune! “A Passing Day” on B2 closes this EP with introverted and slowed down vibes, this calm anchor feels perfectly crafted for dramatic moments within a set and serves well as the closer of this four-tracker.

For what will become the definitive re-release of this work of breath-taking ambition and divine inspiration, Lift To Experience returned to the original Texas studio – The Echo Lab in Denton – where their one and only album release was recorded, and have remixed and re-mastered the album. In the run up to their headline show at the Royal Festival Hall on Friday, June 10 as part of Guy Garvey’s Meltdown Festival, the legendary cult band comprising Josh T. Pearson, Andy “The Boy” Young, and Josh “The Bear” Browning have announced a series of warm up shows in Texas. Josh T. Pearson explains, “Back in the studio neck deep in the heart of Texas where Lift recorded The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads, remixing the album the way it should have be mixed originally. It’s good to have our balls back after years spent being castrated. Excited for those who never got to experience the band live to hear a more accurate representation of what we sounded like then.” Lift To Experience formed in Denton, Texas, at the end of the last millennium. Their rise was fast and their reign was short;
following the release of their long-form masterpiece, the band imploded at the peak of their career due to a series of cruel tragedies. In this short time, however, the band achieved high critical acclaim and were so beloved by John Peel, that he invited them to record three Peel sessions in just five months and were included in the Best 125 Peel Sessions of all time. Like a collection of short stories, it chronicles the events surrounding her pregnancy and the agony of nearly losing her daughter, but it's much more than an album about childbirth. Mother Tongue is about instinct, about belonging, and about finding one's own emotional language. "I never know what my records are about until they're almost done," Rebekka Karijord admits of Mother Tongue's provenance in a typical, if wry, display of candour. "It's like a subconscious collecting process, shooting arrows into the dark and then getting out there to see where they have landed. This time, however, it was a bit different." The album was recorded in Hawaii, Stockholm &
