Though he may not be a household name, Kenniff's evocative, distinctly American music has become quietly ubiquitous in the past few years, often appearing on NPR, in films, on TV, and in ads for Apple, Facebook, and Google among others. Recorded over the course of three years, the material on his new album Sometimes functions as a journal, documenting brief moments in Kenniff's day when he could turn to the piano as a source of solace and unending creative possibilities. Kenniff wrote and recorded everything on the album with the exception of the track "A Word I Give", which is a collaboration with preeminent Japanese pianist Ryuichi Sakamoto, who once described Goldmund's music as "...so, so, so beautiful." In an interview with NPR's Weekend Edition Keith Kenniff discussed his appreciation of Civil War era music, and it's ability to covey "...so much story in so few notes." Similarly, these improvisations manage to be richly evocative despite their technical and compositional simplicity, using subtle details and dynamics to express what might otherwise be inexpressible. Fundamental changes have taken place since FOUND launched factorycraft , their first on Chemikal Undergound, in 2011. More than four years have passed. The trio is now a duo of Ziggy Campbell and Kev Sim. And on Cloning , the group’s new album, the sound of FOUND is wreathed in a haar of analogue synthesizers where once it buzzed with brittle guitars. Campbell acknowledges his and Sim’s thoughts turned to matters apocalyptic as a means of defeating the monotony of touring factorycraft . At the same time they were plugging into Vangelis, Tangerine Dream and John Carpenter, electronic music pioneers Beaver & Krause and Tristram Cary, and composers Alan Hawkshaw and Keith Mansfield. Thus six of the album’s 11 songs take the form of brief sci - fi instrumentals bearing titles such as ‘Clone Your Own’ , ‘ The First Catas trophe ’ and ‘ Main Title ’ , the last of which hints at the genesis of Cloning in Campbell’s imagination as a concept album for an unmade film of that name. The remaining five cuts complement the sonic rapture of those vignettes by grafting Campbell’s bent f or pop melody on to equally articulate but more rhythmically robust backing tracks, notably on opening single ‘A Souvenir For Every Hope You Had’, the effervescent ‘ Hit The Clone Button ’ , the tenebrous, foreboding ‘Wheel Out Apocalypse’ and the sprawling p enultimate track, ‘ The Second Catastrophe ’ . On such songs it dawns on you that amid the spree of low - frequency oscillation, filter sweeps and arpeggiation, much of it fed through a modified Watkins Copicat, Campbell’s voice is the lone element preventing the triumph of machine over mankind. Cloning was recorded in a studio in the depths of Edinburgh University’s Appleton Tower, at the Edinburgh home of Irish singer Nuala Kennedy (a friend of Ziggy Campbell) and within a derelict primary school in the Hig hlands. Campbell inadvertently deleted the original album in its entirety before rebuilding it using rough mixes and orphan sound files. We’re rather glad he bothered. Flowers Of Evil is a punk band from New York City, but listening to this self-titled debut LP you would think this band couldn't be from anywhere near NYC. Pulling influences from The Germs to Rudimentary Peni to The VSS, the musicians craft a sound that is more than just a tribute to confrontational punk bands of the past-it's a sound all their own. On this record, Flowers Of Evil packs in more intensity in 20 minutes than most groups do in a lifetime. Songs like "S.S. Eyes" and "Number Two" are aggressive in the way bands like The Screamers were, but feel harder, even with the catchy vocal melodies. Dangerous Rhythm formed in Mexico in August 1978 and can claim to be one of the first punk bands in the country. Piro, the band's vocalist, immersed himself in the whole Los Angeles scene, and was in contact with the Chicano side of the city through Tito Larriva from The Plugz and other bands from the area like Circle Jerks, Fear or Black Flag. The impact of punk classics like the Sex Pistols, The Clash or the Ramones obviously had an influence on the sound of the group. Dangerous Rhythm never forgot their family tree, absorbing large doses of unconventional rock like the New York Dolls, The Stooges or Lou Reed. All these elements helped the band forge their own style and sound; starting off with songs sung mostly in English and vibrant, direct melodies. After laying the foundations of the non-existent punk scene and recording their debut, "Electroshock", they released their first eponymous LP in 1981. It was released by Hip 70, run by Armando Blanco, who owned the club of the same name which was the focal point of the Mexican scene in the 80s. Key figures of 70s counterculture like Ricardo Ochoa (Peace and Love and Nahuatl) or veterans like Max Reese (sound engineer for Tom Petty) collaborated on the recording, which was then mastered by Wally Traugoot, who worked on the live album "The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl". The end result was mind blowing and shows a band with nerve that played new wave with a punk rhythm. Record Label: Beat Generation Style: Punk
