Destroyer's Poison Season opens swathed in Hunky Dory strings. Dan Bejar's a dashboard Bowie surveying four wracked characters-Jesus, Jacob, Judy, Jack-simultaneously Biblical and musical theatre. This bittersweet, Times Square-set fanfare is reprised twice more on the record-first as swaying, saxophone-stoked "street-rock" and then finally as a curtain-closing reverie. Broadway Danny Bejar dramatically switches scenes with "Dream Lover," all Style Council strut and brassy, radio-ready bombast (echoes of The Boo Radleys' evergreen earworm "Wake Up Boo!"). This being Destroyer, its paramours-on-the-run exuberance is judiciously spiked by his deadpan delivery: "Oh shit, here comes the sun." Like the other DB, Mr. Bejar has long displayed a chameleonic instinct for change while maintaining a unified aesthetic (rather than just pinballing between reference points). No two records sound the same, but they're always uniquely Destroyer. His latest incarnation often appears to take sonic cues from a distinctly British (usually Scottish, to be precise) strain of sophisti-pop: you might hear traces of Aztec Camera, Prefab Sprout, Orange Juice, or The Blow Monkeys. These songs merge a casual literary brilliance with intense melodic verve, nimble arrangements, and a certain blue-eyed soul sadness. Playfully rueful, "Sun in the Sky" foregrounds cryptic lyrical dexterity over pop-classicist strum before gradually left-fielding into rhythmically supple, delirious avant-squall. It's as if Talk Talk took over a Lloyd Cole show. Originally released on a collaborative EP with electronic maestros Tim Hecker and Loscil (the latter's drones are retained here), a retooled "Archer on the Beach" suggests Sade swimming in The Blue Nile, smooth-jazz marimba melancholy dilated by ecstatic ambience. Flecked in heady dissonance, elusively alluring, Dan hymns its eponymous "impossible raver on your death bed" while implicitly beckoning the listener: "Careful now, watch your step, in you go." That's Poison Season in essence: familiar yet mysterious, opaquely accessible. Arch, for sure, but ultimately elevatory.

It transmutes ethereal abstractions into crystalline harmonies and sinuous grooves. It’s music nurtured with the idea of healing, exciting, inspiring, enlightening. Drones, dissonance, warmth, and love. Even if you’re unfamiliar with Angel Deradoorian’s name, you’re likely familiar with her voice. As the former bassist and vocalist for Dirty Projectors, her lepidopteran flights helped buoy the Brooklyn-based group. She’s been a member of Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks and sang on Flying Lotus’ “Siren Song.” Her fist song collection, 2009’s Mind Raft EP elicited praise from Pitchfork for being “passionate and lovingly crafted.” The Fader hailed her “zen weed energy” and “moody dervish spirals. But her debut LP, The Expanding Flower Planet reflects a remarkable creative journey. The title came from a tapestry hanging on the wall in front of Deradoorian’s workstation—a Chinese embroidered image of a flower mandala. “It started to represent to me the growing consciousness of the human mind in the world today,” Deradoorian says. “So the first song I wrote, which I felt appropriate for the album, was called Expanding Flower Planet and represents this desire to broaden the mind and it's capabilities beyond what we are told it can do. Others imitate the past and others divine inspiration and transmit it elsewhere. This is the latter instance. If you listen close enough, you can detect faint hints of Alice Coltrane and Can, Terry Riley, and Dorothy Ashby. A new world springs from ancient traditions—with East Indian, Middle Eastern, traditional Japanese musical inspiration aligned with Deradoorian’s singular orbit. Recorded in various locales over a period of several years, sessions began from scratch in Baltimore, 2011, before moving to her studio in LA. Some tracking was done in a church. Extra tracks were recorded at The Topaz Chamber, which belongs to Deradoorian’s friend, Kenny Gilmore. This is an album so refulgent that it actually sounds like it was made in a Topaz chamber. Roughly 90 percent was written and performed solely by Deradoorian, with assists from drummers Jeremy Hyman and Michael Lockwood, guest vocalist Niki Randa, Arlene Deradoorian and Gilmore, who helped the songs breathe. It’s essentially the offspring of a labyrinthine odyssey of self-exploration. In the course of cutting it, Deradoorian realized a more profound communion with music than she’d ever experienced. It’s salient in the songs, which glow and warp, burn brightly and float gracefully past sun and assorted stars. “It seemed endless, but eventually the shift occurred and it was like a revelation,” Deradoorian describes the epiphany. “I was incredibly grateful for when that day came. It was the first time I really had to force myself to be patient and understand that good things will take time. It won't all happen when you want it to. It'll happen when it's supposed to—when you're truly ready.

BLACK TRIP's first all-killer-no-filler album "Goin' Under", released in 2014 (2013 in Scandinavia), was soaked in the true spirit of the NWOBHM and showed that great heavy metal music still can be made. With bands like IRON MAIDEN, SAXON, THIN LIZZY and '70s-era SCORPIONS amongst their influences, BLACK TRIP really paid both homage and respect to the classic metal sound that runs through the veins of every metalhead, and yet they have their own distinct sound and direction. Now, two years on from that critcally acclaimed debut they are about to release their second album, "Shadowline", which vocalist Joseph Tholl describes as "a bigger, more diverse and more personal album, but still dark, heavy metal rock". Guitarist Peter Stjärnvind adds: "The album whilst heavy is also groovy and catchy and just makes you feel happy in a really good way." Joseph continues: "When 'Goin' Under' was being shaped, it was, basically, just me and Peter. But during that time we got offered gigs here in Sweden before we even had a band, so very quickly we had to get the other guys on board so we could play these gigs and record the album. Me and Jonas [Wikstrand;
drums] didn't know the other guys that well so we've all been on this journey, getting to know each other and growing together as a band. "We all love heavy metal, that's the common bond that binds us, but we all have our different tastes and different musical backgrounds because me and Jonas are from a different musical generation than Peter, Sebastian and Johan. "With the writing and recording of 'Shadowline', we have grown together and it really feels like we have become a band now. We've influenced each other and we've begun to understand what our potential is, what we can do and what we can't do. Every band member has contributed in one way or another to the shaping of this album and following on from what we did on 'Goin' Under' this was a very natural step for us. "With the first album, we were establishing the foundations of our sound, now with 'Shadowline', we have started to build the framework of the band." Speaking about the influences for "Shadowline", it's clear the whole process isn't an exact science for BLACK TRIP. Peter doesn't plan the songs, he just lets the mood take him and whatever comes out comes out. Two bands he has listened to constantly during this time are GEORDIE, particularly the album "Don't Be Fooled by the Name" and BLUE ÖYSTER CULT. "It's all about those little details and feelings that just blow you away!" says Peter enthusiastically. "Shadowline" was recorded and mixed by Nicke Andersson (ENTOMBED, HELLACOPTERS, IMPERIAL STATE ELECTRIC) at his studio The Honk Palace in February/March 2015. All being fans of his bands and his musical taste and approach to sound, they felt he was someone they could trust to get the very best in the studio. The recording went really smoothly and Andersson has definitely captured the sound and feel of the essence of what BLACK TRIP are all about. Says Joseph: "Nicke was totally on our wavelength from the start and during the recording process it felt like he was more or less one of us." Peter adds: "His all-around input was just great. He would suggest simple things, like going from a 4/4 time to double time on the hi-hat to give that extra drive.
