Albert Mangelsdorff, the German trombonist who died aged 76 last year, helped burst open the sonic possibilities and athleticism of a famously lethargic instrument. German label Skip Records has issued the 1979 Hamburg live recording with Norwegian bass star Arild Andersen and Swiss drummer Pierre Favre that Mangelsdorff called "the most thrilling trio recording" of his career. It sat in the vaults for a quarter-century, but the music is so vivacious, you'd have thought they could have heard it fizzing away deep in the box. Both Mangelsdorff and Andersen bring a remarkable lightness and delicacy to their heavyweight instruments. The title track's rocking riff hints at Mangelsdorff's trad-jazz apprenticeship, his trombone descending to a tuba's depths, and the free-floating Soulbird mingles didgeridoo-like huffing, Mangelsdorff's famous blown-and-sung harmony playing and Andersen's lithe bass variations. The threesome rockets through most of its awesome arsenal on the 14-minute Warbling Warbler, from bop-swing and free improv to timbral adventures that sound as if six musicians were playing rather than three. The themes are whimsically gripping; they make terrific springboards for improvising, and Favre is both a percussion sorcerer and a lightly dancing swinger. Trombone, bass and drums may not sound like a promising combination, but this is cutting-edge jazz-improv with an idiosyncratically buoyant lyricism. Record Label: Skip Records Style: Jazz

Through the Sparkle is a collaboration between French ensemble astrïd and American pianist and composer Rachel Grimes. Rachel Grimes is best known for her chamber music project Rachel’s, a hugely influential group formed in 1991 in Louisville, Kentucky, releasing six studio albums between 1995 and 2005. She has also released a string of contemporary classical works in recent years on labels such as Temporary Residence. astrïd is a collective of four musicians based in Nantes, releasing records on Rune Grammofon and Home Normal. After years of mail and email back and forth over the ocean, from Nantes to Kentucky, astrïd invited Rachel to come for a residency to make music together and play shows in France. They gathered for a few days, here and there, in 2012 and 2013 to write songs in Cyril and Vanina's home studio in the countryside. The compositions found on Through the Sparkle glow with a unique, connected energy and a pure, instinctive musical understanding. Considered contributions from all sides allow the pieces to unfurl naturally. Each note and phrase feels like it simply couldn’t be placed anywhere else in the album. Charming, gentle and cinematic sounds are found here in abundance. Melodies circle and reveal themselves without force, allowing the listener to focus and explore the depths of what is on offer. Musically, Through the Sparkle is an expansive and evocative album. There is a presence to be felt throughout, from Cyril Secq’s emotive tremelo’d guitars of M5 to the darker, more haunting mood of The Theme, to the tension in Mossgrove & Seaweed. Strings and woodwind coalesce around intricate piano and guitar movements creating a wealth of harmony and melancholy. Through the Sparkle is a record of miniature symphonies, of elegant restraint. The Lakatos are well on their way to creating a name as the Reinhardts have had for generations, but with a contemporary field adapted to the development of jazz. Tony Lakatos is one of the most innovative musicians of the new generation, who extend the range from the traditionally virtuosic treatment of the violin or the acoustic guitar in the Gypsy Swing to the areas of improvisation or the fully composed free form with inclusion of far-reaching roots. And, not to forget, he uses the saxophone - an instrument that enables him to visit the origins of Gypsy music in Rajasthan, India. "Gypsy Colors" is the current album by Tony Lakatos and his outstanding ensemble in every position - and it is a wonderful walk through styles and cultures. In "Troublant Bolero", he also uses the Cimbalon known from the Hungarian picture book culture of the "Zigan" chapels there, and follows the adaptation of the traditional Roma folk song "Duj-Duj Demla Devla Phaka Duj" a relaxed piece in the finest modern Jazz with Bossa elements. The album is an acoustic treasure, a pleasurable experience in many colors that gives its protagonist ample space to present himself in all its virtuoso - a tastefully crafted package with many delightful surprises. For example, Monika Rostas (almost almost uncommon) with her charming voice Horizonte, Ferenc Snetberger, who once again shows his rank on the acoustic guitar, Roby Lakatos, a real primate on the violin and cool times Swinging Szakcsi Bela Lakatos at the piano. A jazz album, which does not allow a genre assignment and thus achieves a special validity. Here, musicians under the restrained leadership of Tony Lakatos on the tenor and soprano saxophone and the excellent rhythmic background of Andras Lakatos at the drums at the work, which make a very sustained attention. Listening to the key title "Mr. Fried" with the eyes closed, conveys a jazz pleasure that can always be compared with Paul Desmond.
