“With the success of Bjork, GusGus and Sigur Ros, Iceland is well and truly established as a source of new and interesting music, and I don’t know whether it’s just good fortune or perhaps grand design, but the artists that we get to hear in the UK rarely swim too close to the mainstream. So it is with Reykjavík singer-songwriter Ragga Gröndal. Her songs, sung in English, straddle several styles from jazz to folk, but at no point does she pander to conventional contemporary expectations. Of course, there are influences on her music, and as “Astrocat Lullaby” plays out, it’s artists such as Kate Bush and Tori Amos that come to mind. That’s decent company to keep, and Gröndal bears the comparison well, because her songs are good enough and she never settles into one signature style. The album begins with “Bangsi”, which is propelled by assorted percussion, with Gröndal’s voice carrying the melody – think a calmer, gentler Creatures. Alt folk singer songwriter duo Max & Laura Braun are siblings. Born in Germany, they started making music together in their early teenage years. But life has since separated them. While Max stayed in Germany, Laura up and left in the late 90s to make London her home. During the following years they only occasionally managed to play and sing together. Now, Nó Na Orelha, the second album from Criolo, is here. This is the point where Sao Paulo hip-hop gets a lot more interesting. Each song on Nó Na Orelha has its own identity, though a low, bottom-end is prominent on the majority. Coupled with echoing drum hits, this low bass makes songs like “Samba Sambei” reminiscent of the dub experiments of DJ Tudo. On “Mariô” (a collaboration with Kiko Dinucci) a roaming bass line is joined by call-and-response vocals in a clear flirtation with Afro-Brazilian song and rhythm, on “Freguês da Meia Noite” the bass saunters around while eerie organ notes sustain a la Portishead. The production is led by Daniel Ganjaman and Marcelo Cabral, who provide the foundation of guitar, bass and keys on the album. Artists including Rodrigo Campos (percussion), Guizado (trumpet), Thiago Franca (sax), Jucara Marcal (backing vocals), Renato Rossi (viola) and Luiz Gustavo Nascimento (violin), as well as scratching from DJ Dan Dan and DJ Marco, all help give the album it’s full band sound. Nó Na Orelha is a mindblowing album with far too many hooks and ideas to drift into obscurity. This really feels like the start of something special, possibly a point where the multiple cultures, religions, traditions and people of Sao Paulo find an album that represents them as a whole. Might as well stick with the label National for the rest of the week's mp3 posts. Micke from Sweden, the solo alias of Micke Lohse from Atomic Swing, at his best conjures up the aged, world-weary sounds of American-era Johnny Cash. At his worst, well, let's just stick with what works... "Waiting for the end" even incorporates some apocalyptic end-times religious imagery too, though I can't say whether or not he's got true faith in his heart or if he's just putting on airs. Regardless, as long as it's delivered convincingly that's all that matters and Micke does a decent job of pulling it off. Also, even when the strings and backing choir come in, he keeps the arrangement sparse and raw and works it for all he's got. At least it sounds honest. During the last couple of years we have been flooded with punk-socialized singer-songwriters with tattoos, beards, and rough charm. And if we are honest we must admit that we usually do not remember much else about them on the day after that comfy unplugged concert in our favorite bar around the corner. There are just too many of them, and too few whose songs are memorable enough to make a lasting impression. But sometimes, in some very few instances, we find ourselves suddenly leaning forward, stopping our conversations and getting carried away by a song, by a voice and a guitar. Tobias Heiland, a.k.a. GHOST OF A CHANCE, is such an instance. Sure, he has played in hardcore bands before, just like all the other guys, and he also has tattoos and wears flannel shirts. Fair enough, but beside the point. The difference is that his songs, soaked in American folk, indie and blues, sound incredibly mature, honest, and heartfelt. His music itself is substantial enough that it can do without big, flashy effects.
