Performer, producer, songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Dominic "Mocky" Salole rose to prominence in the Berlin electronic scene of the mid-2000s, releasing three acclaimed solo albums, co-writing and producing classics like Jamie Lidell's Multiply (2005) and Feist's The Reminder (2007), and making waves on stage with close collaborators (and fellow Canadians) Peaches, Feist, and Chilly Gonzales. A critical favorite, his 2009 album Saskamodie was described by Pitchfork as "an exceptionally musical album -- there's no other word for it -- that could fail to seduce only the hardest of hearing, or the hardest of hearts." Key Change documents Mocky's move from the musical community of Berlin to that of LA, and reflects the city's underground jazz and psychedelic scene. "Frank Sinatra was the first techno artist," declared Mocky in a 2015 interview on PRI's The World. As Sinatra was one of the first singers to use microphone technology to bring more intimacy to his sound, Mocky uses software and laptop-recording to bring the listener within close range of his music. Mocky is a radical multitracker -- he plays most of the instruments on Key Change himself -- but he strictly avoids presets and uses no samples. As Mocky said in a 2015 interview in Wired, "The most modern thing I can do in 2015 is make music with my bare hands." Key Change is also a testament to Mocky's musical family: the wondrously lush "When Paulie Gets Mad" features frequent Flying Lotus collaborator Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on strings; the infectious "Living in the Snow" features a Feist cameo on drums; Moses Sumney and Joey Dosik, two singers for whom Mocky has written and produced and who have been making a mark on the LA scene, turn in a smoother-than-smooth vocal performance on "Tomorrow Maker"; and longtime collaborator Chilly Gonzales sits in on piano and Rhodes on "Head in the Clouds." Mocky draws on the past and the future to give us back the present as only someone with deep roots in electronic music can. If "machines have become the arbiters of emotion," as Mocky claims, then Key Change offers another way. Deeply familiar yet utterly new, dreamy and ethereal yet earthy and grounded, this is the music of paradox. It resists classification, as many a music journalist has discovered. Originally released as a strictly limited 10-inch vinyl record exclusive on Record Store Day 2012, this long sold-out must-have for fans of these two artists will finally be re-issued – this time in 12-inch format (and with a new barcode)! Erased Tapes label mates Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm recorded and mixed their first collaborative record between Reyjkjavík and Berlin as a surprise release for label founder Robert Raths. The ambient/electronic work ‘Stare’ is a true family effort with long-time collaborator Anne Müller joining in on cello and all graphics created by close label-friend and designer Torsten Posselt of FELD Studios. Words by Nils Frahm: “I heard ‘Eulogy For Evolution’ for the first time six years ago and I was totally captivated. Impossible to know back then that I was supposed to meet Ólafur many years later as my label mate. Later when he took me along a tour of his we also noted that we kind of like hanging out together, doing important things like cover versions of long forgotten songs or eating veggie pizza. Also he would join my live set for a jam and I would return the favour by playing along with his set. All in all, I fell for Óli and after one memorable jam session we had in Berlin at Roter Salon in 2011, he finally proposed the idea to visit me in my studio in Berlin to work on 'some music'. I was happy and delighted about that idea, so we got together in April 2011 and after having a big pizza, I plugged in some old analogue synths and we played for four days until late in the night. Also queen Anne Müller stopped by after a show with Agnes Obel to record some cello at 5 am in the morning for ‘b1’. Making music together with people is lovely! The time I spent with Óli in Berlin made me very happy and the music wasn't like anything I have heard before. It was all very reduced and minimal and I felt like I couldn't have done this alone. So we decided to do another 4-day jam at Óli´s E7 studio in Reykjavik. So I flew there in the end of October 2011 to repeat the trick and record some out of this world ambient music. It didn't take us too long to write ‘a1’ and ‘a2’. I can’t wait for the follow up!” Words by Ólafur Arnalds: “After having toured together and having had many inspiring late night conversations, I decided to visit Nils in his Durton Studio in Berlin for a weekend. We didn't have anything specific in mind, we just wanted to hang out, jam and eat some falafel. That's what we did, but somehow we also made 25 minutes of ambient bliss that weekend. After that we quickly decided we had to do the same in my studio in Iceland. Just hang out for a weekend and possibly make some music. So the album became kind of an Iceland vs. Berlin thing. I think you can hear it very well in the sound (side a vs. side b) and that is the most interesting thing about this record for me: that subtle but significant different in the characteristics of the music two people made in Iceland against what the same two people made in Germany. I'm not sure why we decided to keep it secret, it just happened. But it sure was fun! I remember a party at Robert's (Erased Tapes founder) flat in Berlin, where me and Nils stood in the corner the whole night whispering about the project. We then delivered the fully mastered record with finished artwork to Robert around the 5th anniversary of the label in early 2012. It would have been nice to be there to see his face." For Jakub Alexander, the languages of music and visual art are permanently intertwined. And he's always been this way - from his birthplace in communist Poland, to growing up outside of Detroit, to his current home in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. "When music like Gas, early Dial Records, and Mille Plateaux releases in the 2000s popped up in my headphones," Alexander begins, "it was completely visual for me. Something clicked from collecting pages out of old Architectural Digest magazines and being completely overwhelmed with inspiration for my own visions of interior architecture." The concept carries on still, now as an integral part of Body Complex, his second album as Heathered Pearls, which also features contributions from fellow Ghostly artists The Sight Below, Shigeto, and Outerbridge (mem. Beacon). Body Complex represents a new form of Alexander's visually inspired sound creation, but just as it points to changes in direction for the ambient-inclined producer, it also revisits the past experiences that make his music possible.
