Decadubs 5" is a vinyl-only double-pack companion to"Hyperdub 10.4", the fourth and final CD in Hyperdub's series of collections throughout 2014 to mark the label's first decade in existence. Both "Decadubs 5" and its full-length parental set explore the club spaces opened up by house, garage and techno, as viewed through Hyperdub's singular filters. Side 1 leads out with "Lambeth", a long awaited previously unreleased track by BURIAL, with an unusually triumphant and - compared to recent extended montages - relatively direct 2step feel. This is followed by the low slung tech-garage of KODE9's "Oh", while on the flip the whole of Side 2 is given over to the lush deep house of COOLY G's "Love Again". Side 3 opens with the fathoms-deep bubbling bass and synth washes of DVA's extremely psychedelic "Monophonic Nightmare", then DORIAN CONCEPT turns in a quirky remix of MARTYN's classic "Mega Drive Generation", which originally appeared on Hyperdub's fifth anniversary compilation in 2009. Side 4 reveals another classic from the vaults in the shape of COOLY G's skeletal house cut "Him Da Biz", and the EP comes to a close with energy levels turned up on Funkystepz's "Vice Versa", a track much in demand since it first appeared on KODE9's "Rinse 22" mix compilation from 2013. The "Killing Season" EP is the first collaborative release from KODE9 & THE SPACEAPE since their 2011 album "Black Sun". The lyrical themes explored on THE SPACEAPE's 2012 Haitian-inspired EP "Xorcism" are expanded. The emotional, spiritual and psychological effects of living with illness and the unknown are dissected wryly, but often with unforgiving brutality, in this new batch of songs. "Chasing A Beast", depicts a nightmarish scenario where the cards are clearly stacked, culminating with our character's nemesis, "..a white magic woman" offering "..a gun or a knife". "Devil Is A Liar" spits in the eye of those who live in fear of burning in hell. "The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist". "Heart" unhooks the life support and strips back the beats onto which THE SPACEAPE grieves for this "vital organ", languidly delivering a litany of deceit and betrayal perpetrated by our "souls sacred ghetto". "Pictures On The Wall" wryly paints its own picture of the stasis one finds oneself in, as images stare back, depicting a world far from their own. Finally, "Autumn Has Come" maps the body onto a decaying city as winter approaches. Decadubs 4" is a vinyl-only companion-piece to "Hyperdub 10.3", the latest CD in Hyperdub's ongoing series of birthday-marking collections. Following on from the first two 10th anniversary compilations, the third act represented in "10.3" transects and extrapolates forward the Hyperdub catalogue from yet another angle, this time following the melancholy vapour trail drafted by Burial's numerous atmospheric beatless moments. This EP tunes in to those 11 new moments of downcast ambience that comprise half of the CD's complete content, resulting in over 40 minutes of hitherto-unknown audio which squarely shoulder their "Extended Play" billing. Formed tangentially to Hyperdub's main agenda of basstrax for the floor, these mini-soundtracks for films-to-come reinterpret the idea of dubtraction. Instead of merely reducing a vocal melody to echoed or reverbed vestiges, here is trace-music reduced to gaseous residuum, free of drums and often basslines, leaving only synthesised, sampled or looped textures that might hang fume-like, or rotate frictionless as mini cyclones, travelling from warped, hi-def interludes to citric synth jams, from hazy devil mixes to fleeting, blue sax solos, terminating at an eight minute modular flatline. IKONIKA is in straight up banger mode on this EP, possibly her finest release to date. Confident, energetic and tough, these tracks are made from solid tour experience and made for big room dancing. The EP is made with an almost 3D sense of contrast, and a brilliant ability to balance dusty old school sounds and shinier new ones and reshape them into something that sounds really fresh. "Position" kicks things off with rough kicks and snares that sound like they've been created in a foundry, mixed into rolling kicks lifted from a crumbling drum machine and vocals sliced and diced into sharp hallucinatory rhythms. "Praxis" sounds like a track that could have come from her groundbreaking "Contact, Want, Love, Have" debut album, except the straightforward melodies with droning synths and steamy drums over growling bass give the track a confident upgrade. "Strawberry Underlay" builds melody lines over a single basic, repeating riff in quick succession while a series of interchangeable, tight old school drum patterns stop and start underneath in quick succession. It's a brilliant exercise in dynamics and tension. "Wakeup Sequence" sounds like freestyle pop driven into strange Atari game shapes, bubbling arpeggios, rough, funky melodies, ancient drum machines, and distorted guitar synth and weird squeaks. After their collaboration on his ,Pretty Ugly album, DVA is joined again by South African singer ZAKI IBRAHIM with their brand new summery mutant garage track ,Solid. DAM FUNK jumps on IKONIKA's funk bomb ,Mr. Cake, adding a fun, party vocal. Continuing the ,80s funk vibe is MORGAN ZARATE and ROSES GABOR's ice cold Prince-influenced ,Pusher Taker, the lead track from his 2013 EP. The second of the Decadub vinyl-only releases dedicates three of its four sides to a volley of woozy and twisted footwork from most of the key members of Chicago's Teklife crew. Side One starts with DJ RASHAD and GANT MAN's squiggly 303 banger "Acid Life" and moves onto TASO & DJUNYA'S Darwinian banger "Only The Strong Will Survive". Side Two descends into DJ SPINN's bombastic "All My Teklife" and then EARL, RASHAD & TAYE's "Bombaklot" which takes Hyperdub full circle with a yardcore bomb like a 2014 upgrade of the label's early days. Side Three leads with DJ EARL's immaculate diva vocal cut-up of "I'm Gonna Get You", then moves on into DJ TAYE's fizzling R&B jam "Get Em Up" and the stone cold, warped humour of "Icemaster" by HEAVEE. On the fourth and final side, Tokyo-based ally QUARTA330 returns to craft "Hanabi", an epic, uptempo synthesiser jam. Young gun CHAMPION follows with "Power Cut", its minimal, energetic and militant kicks and bass molded with cowbell and lots of tight edits, before dropping some neat keys and a warping bassline two thirds in. IKONIKA finishes things off with the solemn march of "Tug Zone", opening slow but building in flickering high hats and gaseous cymbals into a track which could have emanated from Battlestar Galactica.
