Where Have You Been All My Life?, released on 8th January 2016, is a collection of songs that distils five years and three albums of Villagers’ songwriting into one flowing narrative. Recorded in one day at London’s RAK Studio with Richard Woodcraft (Radiohead, The Last Shadow Puppets) and Villagers live engineer Ber Quinn, the album is a re-imagining of older material seamlessly woven with present glories from Villagers’ most recent studio album, Darling Arithmetic. Released in April 2015, Conor O’Brien’s third album under the guise of Villagers was a more pared-back, intimate journey compared to the multi-faceted arrangements of Becoming A Jackal (2010) and {Awayland} (2013). This fresh approach was extended on subsequent Villagers tours, where old songs were reinvented to match the new. Then for one day in July 2015, 18 songs were quickly captured and 12 songs chosen for the final album, making it Villagers’ most intense, but satisfying, session to date. These recordings are all first or second takes, and the immediacy of the occasion was part of the magic that day, live and unadorned by overdubs or studio trickery. The unique nature of these arrangements is due in no small part to the musicians in the room at the time of recording: Cormac Curran on grand piano and analogue synthesizer, Danny Snow on double bass, Mali Llywelyn on harp, mellotron and vocals, and Gwion Llewelyn on drums, flugelhorn and vocals. The result is a lush, harmony-laden and vibrant document of a time and a place. Included in the album is a new recording of ‘Memoir’, which O’Brien wrote for Charlotte Gainsbourg; it can be found on her 2011 album Stage Whisper, but has never before been recorded by Villagers until now. Philadelphia’s Alex Giannascoli aka Alex G is pleased to announce his forthcoming new full-length album and his first for Domino, Beach Music, on October 9, 2015. Beach Music was written and recorded in Giannascoli’s apartment, between the Fall of 2014 and the Spring of 2015, during breaks from touring with the likes of Speedy Ortiz, Cymbals Eat Guitars and Elvis Depressedly. While its predecessors often came in uninterrupted bursts—from his head to his Bandcamp page in a matter of hours and days—Beach Music was shaped in part by Giannascoli adapting to life as a touring musician. Songs were written within months of one another rather than all at once, with influences ranging from noise music to piano-based laments to Southern rock to the rhythmic focus of techno—whatever he happened to be most interested in at the time. “Every song is coming from a different place,” he says. “It branches off in all these directions, but it has its own sound. It’s not something I do intentionally, but I’m the common thread." The album, his seventh full-length, follows on from previous beloved albums DSU (Orchid Tapes), Trick, and Rules, which have led to a fervent cult fan base, a number of Artist To Watch designations from outlets such as Fader and Rolling Stone, and a dedicated live audience who sing along with every word. Liquid Liquid, the no-wave band so good they named them twice, get their first three, groundbreaking EPs re-released as part of this great retrospective on Domino, which also compiles a number of previously unreleased and live recordings there are ten bonus cuts in total). The influence of the New York post-punk band can be heard throughout today's more rhythmically-oriented rock bands, from the DFA roster to !!! and The Rapture, but beyond that, as if the impact (however furtive) this band had on popular culture wasn't clear enough, a quick listen through 'Cavern' reveals the foundations of Grandmaster Flash's 'White Lines' which sampled and generally plundered the song for all its worth. Liquid Liquid were also one of the first bands to incorporate the percussion-heavy sounds of Afrobeat and more experimental drum manoeuvring: the treatments and production techniques bhind 'Lub Dupe' sound like a particularly odd piece of early radiophonic tape music, while a song like 'Bellhead' is equal parts gamelan orchestra and Rio carnival. Liquid Liquid could be the very archetype of a band who made a vast impact on the musical climate despite its minuscule discography, although the release of this hour-long collection means there's never been quite so much of it all in the same place before. Most comfortable writing uncomfortable songs, Brace the Wave finds the songwriter exploring yet another transitional period in his life. Tracks like “Redeemed”," "Wave," and "Moving" employ his early methods of tuning his ukulele down low and writing during the recording process, while album tracks "Lazy" and "C&E" are traditional-style folk songs that he performed live in the studio. The album was recorded in about six days with Justin Pizzoferrato (who also worked on Dinosaur Jr.'s Beyond, Farm, and I Bet on Sky) in Easthampton, MA, which Barlow now calls home after seventeen years in LA.
